Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5 — A Name in the Dark

They reached the trading outpost by dusk.

It was a small settlement tucked between the cliffs — a cluster of wooden huts, a blacksmith's forge, and a single tavern glowing with lantern light. Smoke curled from chimneys, carrying the scent of roasted meat and damp earth. After days of travel, the noise and warmth felt almost foreign.

Kaela dismounted first, scanning the area with a soldier's instinct. "We stay only for supplies," she said. "No lingering."

Aric nodded, pulling his hood lower. "Understood."

But Kaela noticed the way his shoulders tensed, the way his gaze flicked toward the tavern door as if expecting someone to burst through it. She filed the observation away. Another piece of the puzzle.

Inside, the tavern was crowded — merchants, hunters, travelers. The air buzzed with laughter and clinking mugs. Kaela pushed through the crowd, Aric close behind her, until they reached the counter.

"We need dried rations, bandages, and—"

She stopped.

A man at the far table had risen to his feet, staring at Aric with wide, disbelieving eyes.

Kaela's hand went to her sword.

Aric froze.

The man stumbled forward, voice trembling. "Y‑Your High—"

Aric moved faster than she'd ever seen him move. In two strides he reached the man, clamping a hand over his mouth and dragging him into the shadows near the back door.

Kaela followed instantly.

Outside, the night air was cold and sharp. Aric released the man, who gasped for breath, eyes darting between them.

"Please," he whispered. "I didn't mean to say it aloud. I just— I thought you were dead."

Kaela's blood ran cold.

Dead.

High—

Her grip tightened on her sword. "Explain," she demanded.

The man swallowed hard. "I served in the palace guard. I saw him the night of the fire. I saw him escape. I thought—" His voice cracked. "I thought they killed him."

Kaela's heart pounded. "Who is he?"

The man hesitated, looking to Aric for permission.

Aric's jaw clenched. "Don't."

Kaela stepped between them, eyes blazing. "Tell me."

The man's voice was barely a whisper.

"He is Prince Arion."

The world tilted.

Kaela's breath caught, her vision narrowing to the man standing before her — the quiet scholar, the calm traveler, the man who fought beside her, who wrapped her wound, who spoke to her under the moonlight.

Prince Arion.

The traitor.

The monster she had sworn to kill.

Her hand flew to her sword, but Arion stepped back, palms raised, eyes steady.

"Kaela," he said softly. "Listen to me."

"Don't," she hissed. "Don't say my name."

The man from the tavern looked between them, terrified. "I shouldn't be here. If the general's men find out—"

"Go," Arion said.

The man fled into the night.

Kaela's blade trembled in her hand. She hated that it trembled. She hated that she couldn't steady it.

"You lied to me," she said.

"Yes."

"You let me protect you."

"Yes."

"You let me—" Her voice broke. She swallowed the rest.

Arion took a step forward. "Kaela, I didn't want you involved. I didn't want you in danger."

"You are the danger."

He flinched, but didn't look away. "If you truly believe that, then strike."

The night held its breath.

Kaela's fingers tightened around the hilt. She could end it now. End her vow. End the ache. End the confusion.

But her arm wouldn't move.

Not because she lacked strength.

But because she remembered the way he looked at the moons. The way he spoke of loss. The way he fought beside her without hesitation. The way he wrapped her wound with hands that shook.

She lowered the blade a fraction.

"Why?" she whispered. "Why hide? Why run?"

Arion exhaled shakily. "Because the man who burned your village… wasn't me."

Her heart stopped.

"It was General Varek," he said. "And if you stay with me, Kaela… you will learn the truth. All of it."

Kaela stepped back, breath unsteady.

The truth.

The truth she had chased for years.

The truth she had built her life around.

And now it stood before her, wearing the face of the man she was supposed to hate.

Arion lowered his hood, letting the lantern light fall across his features — tired, haunted, honest.

"I won't run from you," he said. "If you want to kill me, I won't stop you. But if you want answers… come with me."

Kaela's pulse thundered in her ears.

Her vow demanded blood.

Her heart demanded truth.

And for the first time, she didn't know which path she would choose.
