Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: One Bullet

 Kendra

"What?!"

Myself and Barry exchanged glances after Alessandro gave his instruction. The man, desperate to live, quickly picked up the gun and my heart skipped as I began to panic.

"Why are you doing this?" I snapped, trying to get up but Alessandro's man held me by my shoulder and forced me down. "Please."

"If you can kill her," Alessandro's voice rang out, "I'll let you go when we arrive at Sicily."

Seeing how he repeated that, I glared at him with hate before Barry, who was already getting off the ground, caught my attention. I quickly became alarmed, shifting in my seat as I stared into his eyes. He was really going to kill me to save himself.

"You don't have to do this," I said as he slowly pointed the gun to my head. I was already sweaty and I was hoping Alessandro would put an end to this madness. But he just watched like this was some kind of entertainment.

I was suddenly reminded of my late father's words. He would always say: "It's a cruel world, Kendra. Always remember that you only have yourself. No one's going to save you."

"I'm sorry, Sister," Barry said as he placed his finger on the trigger. "I might go to hell for this, but I have to live."

Before he could pull the trigger, I got up and charged at him with a shout, knocking him to the ground. The man had certainly not expected that, but I was not about to die anytime soon.

I tried to wrestle the weapon out of Barry's hand but he punched me in the face and everything blurred for a second. He pushed me back, getting up to his feet and attempting to shoot me. I got out of the way, elbowing him hard on his chest as I reached for the gun once more.

At some point, I stuck my finger in the barrel but I knew that wasn't going to stop a bullet. So I took it out and tackled Barry to the ground once more.

We were both struggling and at this point, I'd gotten enough punches. The man was strong but not too strong, I hoped.

Eventually, the gun went off, the sound ringing loud in my ears. Barry was on top of me, his one hand around my neck.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw how Alessandro sat up. I managed to look towards him and his cold gaze held a bit of worry. When I finally pushed the unconscious Barry off my body, I saw Alessandro let out a sigh of relief.

There was no way I was mistaken. But was he worried I would die? Wasn't that what he wanted?

I got off the floor, breathing hard and ignoring the sting on my lip. I knew I was bleeding, but I was more concerned about the lifeless man at my feet.

I'd just killed someone.

I lifted my head to glare at Alessandro and his grey eyes hardened once more.

"I guess you would need time to yourself as you need to pray for your soul, Sister," he mocked and I balled my fists in rage.

The gun was still in my hand and the darkest thought crossed my mind. I had already killed one person. It didn't matter if I added another to the list.

Not wanting to lose my chance, I aimed the gun at Alessandro's head and pulled the trigger.

CLICK!

Nothing happened. I stared at the gun and then tried again, and again, but nothing happened. There was no bullet in it.

"See, Matteo?" Alessandro glanced at his man who was wearing a disapproving look. "I told you she would do that." The man got up and walked up to me, standing dangerously close.

He took the gun away from my hand and I couldn't even react because his scent was invading my senses.

"I guess you're not that unpredictable," he said, keeping his voice low. "There was only one bullet in this and you managed to keep yourself alive, so I wouldn't punish you for the nonsense you just tried. I like fighters… especially women who are daring. So, Sister Maria, I plan to keep you alive just to see how long you'd survive."

I mustered all the courage I had in me to glare into his eyes, but my annoyance only seemed to amuse him.

"Clean up this mess," he ordered his men, referring to the body on the floor. "And get our little nun a place to rest. She must be tired."

With that, he walked past me, disappearing from the scene while I stared at Barry.

Remembering his last words to me, I told myself not to feel guilty. "I'm sorry you had to die," I whispered.

***********

I don't know how long I was asleep for, but I woke up to a noise that made me jump. The door to my room swung open and that man, Matteo, appeared in the doorway.

"Come on," he said and I simply obeyed.

The yacht had stopped moving and we were at a dock which I recognized. This was Sicily. It seems the devil was taking me to his house.

I was led to a waiting car and Alessandro seemed to have disappeared because I didn't see him around.

The ride to his house was quiet but when we arrived, my neck kept turning to get the full view of the place. I had expected a luxurious mansion, but this was unlike anything I had ever seen.

The land had to be over 1.5 acres and every inch of it screamed wealth and power. Another mansion could fit into the driveway. There were tall cypress trees on both sides, standing like guard at attention.

I turned my gaze to the main house which stood at the center. At the front of it was an enormous water fountain and on each side of the entrance were sculpted angels.

"The irony," I muttered under my breath, noticing the pool which was glistening under the sunlight.

The car was parked near the front steps and when I got out, I was led inside.

I was just taking in the grandeur of the hall when Alessandro's voice echoed from the top of the staircase. "Welcome, Sister."

"To hell?" I blurted before I could stop myself.

He shrugged calmly before answering, "If that's what you want it to be."
