Chapter 48 - 48. Crossing Borders

Jaewon stands in the center of his room, surrounded by the quiet disarray of a life paused mid-motion. The low hum of the suitcase zipper drags through the silence as he seals it halfway, only to reopen it again. A jacket. A few pairs of jeans. Plain white and black shirts. He hesitates, then adds something flashier, something loud enough to feel like armor. He stares at the open luggage for a long moment, as if expecting it to answer him.

Across the room, Taesan moves with unsettling calm. There is no hesitation in his hands. Sunglasses with different frames. Two caps. A dark beanie. Neutral scarves folded with precision. Even a change of shoes wrapped separately. He is not packing for travel. He is preparing for disappearance.

Jaewon watches him from the corner of his eye.

"Think we'll blend in?" he asks lightly, though the question carries more weight than it should.

Taesan pauses, glances up, and gives him a small knowing smile. "Blending in is for tourists," he replies. "We are not tourists. We disappear. That is different."

Jaewon lets out a quiet breath. "You make it sound easy."

"It is not easy," Taesan says calmly, closing his bag. "It is necessary."

The word lingers between them.

Jaewon studies him carefully. He has not seen Taesan this composed in years. Not since everything fractured. Not since trust turned brittle and silence became their language. Yet this focus feels different. It is not cold. It is not distant. It feels aligned. As if they are finally standing on the same side of something instead of across from it.

"You've thought about this a lot," Jaewon says softly.

Taesan adjusts the strap of his bag. "I think about contingencies. You know that."

"And I usually don't," Jaewon admits, attempting a faint smile. "I just show up."

Taesan's expression softens. "You showed up this time."

The cab ride to the airport carries a strange stillness. The city passes by in streaks of light and shadow. Neon signs blur against the darkened windows. Jaewon leans his head slightly against the glass, watching familiar streets recede behind them. There is something unsettling about leaving without knowing when, or if, you will return.

Taesan sits in the front seat, voice low and measured as he gives the driver only what is necessary. No excess details. No loose ends. His posture is relaxed, but Jaewon notices the subtle vigilance in his eyes as they scan mirrors and passing vehicles.

"You look calm," Jaewon says after a while.

"I am calm."

"That almost worries me more."

Taesan glances back at him, one brow lifting faintly. "You would rather I panic?"

"No," Jaewon murmurs. "I just… want to know you are not carrying all of this alone."

Silence stretches before Taesan answers.

"I am not alone," he says quietly. "You are here."

The words settle deep.

Jaewon swallows, feeling the old weight press against his ribs. Years of mistrust. Regret that never quite dissolved. Choices that carved distance where there used to be ease. He shifts in his seat.

"Are you sure about this?" he asks again, softer now. "About us doing it this way?"

Taesan turns slightly, his gaze steady and unwavering. "We have spent enough years hesitating," he says. "We move forward now. Together. No second-guessing."

Jaewon studies his face, searching for cracks, for doubt. He finds none. Only resolve. Determination sharpened by experience.

The airport is a blur of people and noise. A cacophony of voices, rolling suitcases, and overhead announcements. It feels strange, the anticipation of what's to come. Their first step into this new chapter isn't something that can be easily erased. The reality of what they're about to do starts to sink in as they walk toward the check-in counter.

Jaewon glances at the fake passports in his hand, his stomach tightening. He hasn't had a chance to process the idea of using them yet. The names on them aren't even close to their own. Different ages, different nationalities, different everything.

"You ready?" Taesan asks, his voice casual, though there's an edge to it.

Jaewon nods, but his fingers twitch with nerves as he hands over his passport. He's sure his heart is racing, but it doesn't show on his face. The airline attendant smiles, types something into the computer, and hands him the boarding pass without a second glance. It's surreal how easy it is to pass as someone else.

Taesan's check-in is even smoother. He hands over his own set of fake credentials with practiced ease, not even giving a flicker of hesitation. His smooth demeanor is a sharp contrast to Jaewon's nervousness, and it makes Jaewon feel a little out of place, but he pushes the feeling aside.

They grab their bags, and Taesan gives Jaewon a reassuring pat on the back. "See? No problems. We're in this together."

Jaewon manages a tight smile. "Yeah, I guess."

Walking toward the gate feels like entering a different world altogether. They're now officially leaving everything behind. Their old lives. Their old selves. It's just the two of them and the unknown.

Jaewon takes a deep breath, steadying himself as they approach the gate. He steals another glance at Taesan, but Taesan is already ahead, walking confidently as if this is all part of the plan, as if it were second nature to him.

They board the plane without issue, settling into their seats. Taesan, ever the strategist, makes sure they're seated apart from each other—less risk of being recognized, less chance of drawing attention.

Jaewon's eyes scan the other passengers, his thoughts racing. What have they gotten themselves into? And what are they going to find once they land?

The flight is long, but it passes in a haze of restless sleep and quiet conversation. By the time they touch down in Seoul, Jaewon feels like he's in another world. Everything looks different, yet eerily familiar. It's just the beginning, but the gravity of it all hits him in waves.

Their first stop is immigration. Jaewon's heart is in his throat as they stand in line, waiting their turn. When it's his turn to face the officer, his palms are sweaty, his nerves threatening to give him away.

The officer barely glances at Jaewon's passport, stamps it with a flick of his wrist, and hands it back.

Taesan is already through, leaning casually against the wall, his arms folded. Jaewon catches up with him, his pulse still racing. They quickly make their way through the airport, eyes darting around, making sure no one is watching them too closely.

The city feels different in the quiet evening light as they make their way toward the hotel. Once there, Taesan wastes no time contacting Hajun. He's kept his connections open, just as planned.

Minutes later, they're in a small, quiet café in the heart of Korea. The place is tucked away, far from the prying eyes of tourists or locals. Jaewon's stomach twists as he sees Hajun approach—tall, with a cool demeanor that hasn't changed since they last met.

Hajun sits down with ease, his eyes scanning both of them before offering a tight smile. "So, you two finally decided to make a move. Well I planned it half."

Taesan nods, his voice low. "We're here to take him down. Joshua won't know what hit him."

Hajun raises an eyebrow but doesn't say anything at first. Then he glances at Jaewon, his gaze assessing. "You've got a plan, I know, a badass one. Because if this goes wrong, it won't just be Joshua you have to worry about."

Jaewon feels the tension in the air as they begin to discuss their next move. The mission is real now, no turning back.
