Chapter 1 - A

Jay and Keifer had known each other forever. From scraped knees to school projects, from birthday parties to family dinners, they had always been inseparable. Their parents' friendship had only strengthened the bond between them, making their connection feel almost inevitable.

"Keifer, pass me the chips," Jay called, stretching lazily on the couch.

"You're hogging the sofa again," he teased, tossing the packet her way.

Jay caught it with a grin. "I'm allowed. Best friends first, siblings second."

Keifer rolled her eyes but smiled anyway. That smile—it always made her heart skip a beat. She shook her head. "You're impossible."

"Maybe," he said softly, nudging her shoulder. "But you love me for it."

Jay laughed, leaning back. "I tolerate you."

"Big difference," he countered, pretending to be offended.

Their laughter echoed in the living room, a sound that had become a soundtrack to their lives. It was comfortable, familiar, and somehow safe.

"Remember that time in third grade when I fell in the mud?" Jay asked suddenly, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

Keifer snorted. "How could I forget? You came home looking like a swamp monster, and my mom refused to wash your clothes!"

"And you still made me chocolate milk afterward," she said, nudging him playfully.

"I did," he admitted, shrugging. "I always have your back."

Jay felt a strange warmth, deeper than friendship. She looked at him for a long moment, studying the familiar curve of his jaw, the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled.

"You always have," she whispered.

Keifer froze, caught off guard. His heart thudded in his chest, but he laughed it off. "Well, that's because you're me. We're basically the same person."

Jay shook her head, smiling softly. "You're not me, Keifer. You're… you. And you're mine."

He blinked, startled, and then laughed nervously. "Yours?"

"Yes," she said, a little too boldly, a little too softly. "Always."

The words hung between them, fragile but electric. Jay quickly looked away, pretending to be absorbed in her phone.

Keifer cleared his throat, trying to shake the sudden heat creeping up his neck. "Uh… well, I guess… I'll always be yours too, then."

Jay's heart skipped again, faster this time. She didn't look up, but her smile betrayed her. "Good. That's settled then."

They sat together in comfortable silence, the kind only lifelong friends could share. But under that comfort, something unspoken had shifted. Something delicate, something exciting, something terrifying.

Keifer glanced at her, noticing how her hair fell over her shoulder, how her lips curved slightly as she scrolled through her phone. He wanted to lean in, just a little, but didn't. He was scared to ruin the years of friendship, yet every fiber of him screamed that this was different.

Jay, on the other hand, felt her chest tighten every time he looked at her. She had always loved the way he laughed, the way he teased, the way he cared. But now, it was more than that. She wanted him closer, wanted to feel his hand brush hers, wanted him to be hers in every way possible.

"Keifer," she murmured, almost to herself, "do you ever think… we're more than this?"

He froze, heart thudding. "More than… friends?"

She finally looked up, eyes locked on his. "Maybe. I don't know. But sometimes I feel like… we've always been waiting for it."

Keifer swallowed hard, the words making his chest tight. He wanted to deny it, but the truth was staring him in the face. "I think… I've always known," he admitted, voice low.

Jay's breath caught. She took a tiny step closer, closing the distance they had never dared to cross before. "Then… what do we do now?"

He met her halfway, their shoulders brushing. "We figure it out," he said, barely above a whisper, his hand hovering near hers, unsure but desperate.

The room was quiet again, but this time, it wasn't just comfort that filled the air. It was anticipation, it was desire, it was the undeniable pull of two souls who had been orbiting each other for years finally acknowledging what they'd always felt.

Jay smiled, small and shy, but full of courage. "Then let's not wait anymore."

Keifer's heart almost stopped. "Not wait?"

She nodded, leaning in just a little closer. "No. I… I don't want to wait."

His hand found hers, fingers intertwining naturally, as if they had been made to fit together all along. "Good," he whispered. "Because neither do I."

And just like that, the world shifted. Two best friends, who had grown up side by side, were finally stepping into something new—something thrilling, something terrifying, something that felt like home.
