Chapter 56 - chapter 56 - Before The Storm

The training hall of Eclipse Sovereign did not echo.

It absorbed sound.

Mana barriers layered the ceiling in concentric rings, faint runes glowing along the edges of the arena floor. This was not a place for ordinary practice. This was where the academy shaped weapons meant to represent it on national ground.

Eight stood at the center.

Shin Woojin stood naturally at the front — not because he demanded the position, but because leadership had quietly settled on his shoulders over the past year.

To his right stood Seraphina Vale, silver hair resting against her back, posture straight, eyes calm but sharp. Frost lingered lightly beneath her boots, responding to her presence rather than command.

Jin stood just behind them, relaxed, hands loosely at his sides. He looked unbothered — but his eyes were working, memorizing.

Kaiser crossed his arms.

Ren rolled his neck once, faint lightning flickering across his fingers.

Serena's flame aura pulsed gently but controlled.

Alicia held her spear upright, perfectly balanced.

Ophelia Charlotte stood slightly apart, observing everyone as though the battlefield had already begun.

Above them, the Vice Dean stepped forward.

Yoon Seolhwa.

Silver-blonde hair tied loosely at the nape, emerald eyes steady and unreadable. When she walked to the edge of the observation platform, even the air felt as though it aligned.

She didn't shout.

She didn't need to.

"You have two months," she began calmly.

Her voice was soft.

But it carried.

"The National Supreme Tournament is not a duel festival."

Her gaze moved slowly across each of them.

"It is structured war."

Silence settled instantly.

The Three StagesShe raised one hand. A projection formed in the air behind her — three luminous emblems.

"Stage One — Team Forest Combat."

The image shifted to a vast virtual woodland.

"All official participants enter the virtual forest simultaneously. One hour time limit."

"Objective: kill."

No embellishment.

"No special targets. No hidden flags. No dramatic twists."

"Whichever academy eliminates more monsters earns the most points."

She paused.

"You will be judged on efficiency."

"Speed without coordination creates chaos."

"Coordination without speed loses."

Her eyes flicked briefly to Ren.

Then to Kaiser.

Then to Jin.

"Understand the difference."

"Stage Two — Two versus Two."

The projection changed to a circular arena.

"Two selected participants from each academy fight on official grounds."

"Not duels."

"Paired warfare."

She stepped slightly closer to the railing.

"Synchronization of breathing. Mana rhythm. Spatial awareness."

"If your abilities interfere with your partner—"

Her gaze sharpened.

"You will lose."

"Stage Three — One versus One."

The final symbol appeared.

"This is where restraint ends."

"Every participant fights."

"Every participant reveals."

She allowed the words to settle.

"If you hold back here, you disgrace the academy."

Her gaze drifted toward Jin briefly.

He did not react.

But he understood.

The Weight of Expectation"During Stage Two and Stage Three," Yoon Seolhwa continued, "the arena will not be filled with students."

A faint chill entered the hall.

"It will be filled with guild leaders. Association executives. Political families."

She did not list names.

She didn't need to.

Everyone in that arena already knew whose eyes would be watching.

Shin's posture didn't change — but something steadier formed behind his expression.

Seraphina's gaze hardened slightly.

Jin remained calm.

Kaiser smirked faintly.

Ren looked excited.

Alicia looked prepared.

Ophelia looked… intrigued.

Team Coordination Begins"Begin Stage One simulation," the Vice Dean ordered.

The arena shimmered.

The stone floor dissolved into digital earth. Tall trees rose around them. A forest formed in seconds — mist drifting through trunks, ground uneven, visibility obstructed.

A timer appeared above.

01:00:00

Monsters spawned.

Low-tier first.

Fast-moving beasts.

Shin's voice cut through immediately.

"Kaiser, forward pressure. Ren, left sweep but don't break formation."

"Serena, controlled burns only."

"Alicia, elevation. Ophelia, misdirect flanks."

He didn't shout.

He commanded.

The team moved.

Kaiser surged forward, wind reinforcing his steps, earth thickening his stance as he slammed through the first wave.

Ren vanished in lightning flashes — but this time he stayed within Shin's visible range.

Serena carved lanes of flame — not explosive, but strategic.

Alicia leapt upward, spear piercing through runners with surgical precision.

Ophelia's illusions flickered — creating phantom team members that confused monster targeting.

Seraphina stepped forward calmly.

Her Ice Domain expanded in measured layers — not full authority, just enough to slow movement zones and create control.

Jin didn't charge.

He watched.

Then he moved only when necessary.

A monster broke through the left flank — faster than expected.

Void Step.

He appeared in its path.

Spatial Fracture disrupted its reinforcement.

Serena's flame ended it instantly.

No wasted motion.

Shin noticed.

He said nothing.

But he noticed.

FrictionTen minutes in, a B-rank beast spawned unexpectedly.

Large. Armored.

Kaiser rushed it immediately.

"Wait—" Alicia started.

Too late.

The beast's counterstrike forced Ren to intervene, lightning crashing violently.

Formation broke for three seconds.

Three seconds was enough.

Another pack flanked from the rear.

Ophelia reacted instantly — illusion splitting the battlefield's perception, buying time.

Seraphina froze the rear advance with precise ice binding.

Jin compressed space beneath Kaiser's footing, stabilizing him before he lost balance.

The beast fell.

The formation recovered.

But silence lingered.

Shin turned slowly toward Kaiser.

"You don't chase glory in Stage One."

Kaiser's jaw tightened.

"I had it."

"You broke rotation."

A tense pause.

Then Kaiser exhaled.

"…Understood."

The first crack in pride had appeared.

That was good.

Better here than at nationals.

Stage Two SimulationThe forest dissolved.

The arena returned.

"Two versus two," Yoon Seolhwa instructed.

She assigned pairings deliberately.

Shin + Ophelia

Seraphina + Jin

Kaiser + Serena

Ren + Alicia

The hall quieted.

Seraphina did not look at Jin.

"Stay in sync," she said simply.

He smiled faintly. "You lead."

Their opponents: Kaiser and Serena.

The clash began.

Flame spiraled. Wind pressure surged.

Seraphina anchored instantly, frost stabilizing the field. Jin didn't overextend. He used Void Step sparingly — not aggressively — positioning rather than striking.

Kaiser attempted to overpower.

Dimensional Collapse disrupted his momentum mid-strike.

Serena attempted to pressure from range.

Jin folded space just enough to shorten the distance between Seraphina and Serena's casting line, allowing Seraphina to freeze the attack mid-formation.

It wasn't flashy.

It was efficient.

They won.

Barely.

Seraphina glanced at Jin afterward.

"You adapt quickly."

"You create stable ground."

A faint pause.

"Don't slow me down in Stage Three," she added calmly.

He tilted his head slightly.

"Try not to fall behind."

Her frost sharpened slightly at that.

But she didn't respond.

The Watching EyesFrom the sidelines, Aira stood with the experience group.

Her gaze followed Jin's movements closely.

She noticed how naturally he synchronized with Seraphina.

And something tightened in her chest.

Valen blood did not retreat easily.

Neither would she.

Closing WordsThe simulation ended.

Breathing was heavier now.

Mana slightly drained.

But coordination had improved.

Yoon Seolhwa stepped forward again.

"You have power," she said quietly.

"Now build trust."

Her emerald eyes rested briefly on Shin.

Then Seraphina.

Then Jin.

"If even one of you breaks formation in Stage One, the academy bleeds."

She turned to leave.

"Tomorrow. Stage Three rotation."

Her voice echoed faintly as she exited.

The eight remained in the arena for a moment longer.

Shin exhaled.

"We're strong."

He looked around.

"But we're not unified."

Seraphina nodded once.

Jin looked toward the empty forest simulation space.

Two months.

Three stages.

Eight academies.

And monsters wearing human faces waiting beyond them.

The storm wasn't here yet.

But it was coming.
