Chapter 11 - trying again

Things didn't go back to how they were before.

They became something new.

Anna and Sid still met every day at work, but now there was more honesty between them. Not perfect honesty, but better than silence. They were trying, and that effort showed in small ways.

Sid started sharing little things.

Not everything at once. Just small pieces.

"Today was stressful," he said one afternoon.

Anna looked up from her laptop. "What happened?"

"Too many expectations," he replied. "I felt like I couldn't keep up."

Before, he would have said nothing.

Now, he said just enough.

Anna nodded. "You don't always have to keep up. Sometimes it's okay to slow down."

He gave a small smile. "I'm learning that."

Anna was learning too.

She stopped expecting Sid to say everything perfectly. She gave him space to open up in his own way. It wasn't easy for her, but she understood now that people express themselves differently.

One evening, they were sitting in the cafeteria, quieter than usual.

"You've changed," Anna said suddenly.

Sid looked at her. "In a good way or bad?"

She thought for a moment. "In a real way."

He didn't fully understand, but he liked how she said it.

"And you?" he asked. "Have you changed?"

Anna smiled softly. "I think I've become more patient. Which is surprising, honestly."

They both laughed lightly.

The tension between them had not disappeared completely. Sometimes, there were still pauses in conversations. Sometimes, they didn't know what to say. But now, those moments didn't feel like distance.

They felt like space.

And space didn't always mean something was wrong.

Days passed like this.

Slow, steady, careful.

One night, Anna stayed late again, working on a design she wanted to get right. Sid walked over after finishing his work.

"You're still here," he said.

"So are you," she replied.

He looked at her screen. "This one looks different."

"It is," she said. "I'm trying something new."

"Are you unsure about it?" he asked.

"A little."

Sid nodded. "Then it's probably worth doing."

She looked at him and smiled. "You say simple things, but they stay."

He shrugged slightly. "Maybe simple things matter more."

They left the office together that night.

The road was quiet. The air felt calm.

They didn't talk much while walking. But this time, the silence felt easier. Not heavy like before. Not confusing.

Just quiet.

As they reached the corner where they usually went separate ways, Anna stopped.

"Sid," she said.

"Yeah?"

"I'm glad we didn't give up."

He looked at her for a second, then nodded. "Me too."

There were still things they didn't fully understand about each other.

Still questions.

Still unknown parts.

But this time, they were not afraid of that.

Because now, they weren't trying to know everything at once.

They were just trying to stay.

And sometimes, that was enough.
