Chapter 1 – The Room After Everyone Left

The door closed behind the last student with a hollow sound that echoed longer than it should have.

Evan remained seated.

Dr. Amelia hart erased the board slowly, as if the equations deserved a gentler ending. When she turned, she saw him still there, still watching, still waiting.

"You don't usually linger," she said.

"I didn't want to forget how it sounded," Evan replied.

"The room. When it's empty."

The made her pause.

There was something unsettling about how well he had learned her rhythms–When she rushed, When she slowed, When she stopped pretending a question didn't matter.

"This is your final semester," she said, carefully neutral.

"Yes."

"And after that?"

"I stop being your student."

The words landed between them–soft, deliberate, dangerous.

Amelia gathered her notes, her finger tightening around the edges. "Some conservation," she said quietly," are easier When they happen to late."

Evan stood. Not closer. Not farther. Just... present.

"Or honest," he said.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then she looked at the clock–and didn't comment on the time.

That was how it Began.

Not with touch.

But with permission not yet given–and not yet taken back.
