Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Twin Tyrants

The two giants rose from their thrones, their faces stark and terrible against the swirling sky.

Agni, the magma titan, stood twenty times the height of a man, its face a mask of cracked, glowing stone, eyes like pits of molten gold. Heat poured from its body in visible waves.

Crylex, the crystal titan, was its mirrored opposite—a giant of flawless, multifaceted crystal, its face sharp and angular, eyes like cold sapphires. It moved with a sound like grinding glass.

They did not speak. They simply stepped forward, and the platform shook.

Lyra hefted her axes, her grin fierce but tight.

Lyra: Big. Let's see how they fall.

Leon's senses screamed. This wasn't a fight they could win with strength alone. But they didn't know the rules yet. They would have to learn them.

Agni moved first, a slow, deliberate stride that carried it across the platform in seconds. It swung a fist the size of a cart, trailing molten rock. Leon and Lyra scattered. Sylas raised her wand, summoning a wall of ice to shield them. The fist shattered it like glass, but it bought them a second.

Crylex didn't move toward them. It raised a hand, and from the ground at Sylas's feet, crystal spikes erupted. She cried out, leaping back, but one grazed her calf. Blood welled.

Leon's mind raced. They were coordinated. One physical, one magical. They had to split up.

Leon: Lyra, with me on the big one! Sylas, keep the crystal busy!

Lyra nodded, charging Agni with a roar. Leon followed, katana heating in his hand. He aimed for the titan's leg, driving the blade deep into the molten rock. Magma sprayed, sizzling against his armor. The wound was deep.

But as he watched, the magma began to flow back together. He glanced across the platform. Crylex was glowing faintly, its energy channeled across the space between them.

Lyra saw it too.

Lyra: They're linked! Hurt one, the other fixes it!

Sylas was struggling. Every spell she cast, Crylex seemed to anticipate. It reflected her ice, dispersed her water, and struck back with shards of its own. She was on the defensive, bleeding from two more cuts.

Leon pulled his blade free. They needed to take one down fast, before it could heal. He focused his energy, drawing on the unified core inside him, and unleashed a beam of needle-fire straight into Agni's chest.

The magma titan roared, stumbling back. A hole, clean and deep, smoldered in its torso. It didn't close.

Leon: Now! Finish it!

Lyra leaped, axes swinging in a devastating arc, cleaving deep into the same wound. Agni shuddered, its form flickering, then collapsed into a pile of cooling, dead stone.

For a second, there was silence.

Then, a pulse of light shot from Crylex. The pile of stone began to tremble, to rebuild itself. Agni's form stirred, pulling itself back together, magma reigniting.

Leon stared in disbelief.

It wasn't healing.

It was resurrecting.

Lyra cursed, backing away as Agni rose again, fully restored, and this time, it was angry. It moved faster, heat blazing. Crylex advanced as well, crystal shards forming in the air around it.

They were surrounded, outmatched, and now they understood: they couldn't kill one without killing the other.

But how? They were too big, too far apart, too powerful.

Sylas was breathing hard, pale from blood loss. Lyra's arms were trembling with fatigue. Leon's energy was draining fast.

They were running out of time. And the Tyrants weren't going to give them a second chance to learn.
