The university library was a massive, silent cathedral of books and mahogany. While the rest of the campus was buzzing with the news of the "Billionaire Squad" in the cafeteria, I was tucked away in a corner of the medical archives, buried under a mountain of textbooks.
The clock on the wall ticked toward 9:00 PM. Mica, Freya, and Rakki had all headed home an hour ago, but I stayed. I had a practical exam on the nervous system tomorrow, and I couldn't afford to fail.
My eyes were blurring. The diagrams of neurons and synapses started to look like tiny spiders dancing on the page. Eventually, the weight of the day—the humidity, the secret lunch, and the stress—won. I folded my arms over my textbook and let my eyes flutter shut for "just a minute."
The Discovery
I didn't hear the heavy library doors creak open. I didn't hear the soft, expensive thud of designer boots on the carpet.
I only felt the change in the air. That familiar, electric pull that always told me my hubby was near.
Keifer had been looking for me for twenty minutes. He had dismissed the Section E boys at the campus gates, telling them he had "business" to attend to. That business was currently drooling slightly on a page about the medulla oblongata.
He stood over me, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. His jaw tightened as he looked at the dark circles under my eyes. To the world, he was the "Monster" CEO, but as he watched me sleep, his expression was pure, unadulterated "Green Forest."
The Gentle Wake-Up
"Weify," he whispered, his voice barely a breath.
He reached out, his large thumb gently stroking the side of my face. I stirred, blinking awake to see the blurry silhouette of a man who looked like he wanted to fight the library for making me stay so late.
"Babe?" I mumbled, my voice thick with sleep. "What time is it?"
It's time to go home," Keifer said. He closed my textbook with one hand and slung my heavy medical bag over his shoulder like it weighed nothing.
"I have to study... the exam..." I tried to protest, but my body felt like lead.
"You've studied enough. If you don't sleep, your brain won't remember the synapses anyway," he said, pulling me up from the chair.
The Secret Exit
We walked out of the library, the halls mostly empty except for a few night-shift security guards. Keifer kept a respectful distance until we reached the shadows of the parking lot where the black Watson SUV was waiting.
The second the door closed and the tinted glass shielded us from the world, the "Secret" ended.
Keifer pulled me into his lap, burying his face in the crook of my neck. I felt him let out a long, shaky breath.
"I hated seeing you like that," he growled into my skin. "Exhausted. Alone in that corner. I wanted to scream at everyone to get out so I could just hold you."
"I'm okay, hubby," I whispered, my fingers running through his hair. "I just want to be a good surgeon."
"You'll be the best," he promised, his grip on my waist tightening. "But you're my weify first. My priority. Always."
The Return to the Black Box
As we drove up the winding roads toward Tagaytay, I fell back asleep against his shoulder.
When we finally reached the mansion, the lights were dim. Keigan and Keiran were already in their wing, hopefully asleep for their own school day tomorrow.
Keifer didn't wake me. He carried me up the glass stairs, through the silent halls, and straight into our room. He laid me down on the silk sheets and began to unlace my shoes with a tenderness that most people would never believe he possessed.
"Goodnight, honey," he whispered, kissing my forehead before climbing in beside me and pulling me into the safety of his arms.
In the quiet of the "Black Box," there were no secrets, no exams, and no Marianos. There was just a man and his wife, finally at peace.
