The transition from the high-octane chaos of the Black Box to the serenity of the mountain sanctuary was supposed to be a "quiet" getaway. Keifer had hand-picked this location—a fortress of glass and timber tucked away in the Cordillera mountains—where the only sounds were the wind in the pine trees and the occasional eagle.
Or so he thought.
11:00 AM: The Arrival at the Sanctuary
POV: Jay
We pulled up the winding driveway in the armored SUV. The air was crisp, smelling of damp earth and pine. Alexander was already out of the car before it fully stopped, his wooden sword at the ready. Astraea was strapped into her car seat, kicking her feet and yelling "Outside! Outside!"
Keifer stepped out, looking relaxed in a dark sweater and jeans. He looked at the massive wooden front doors and breathed a sigh of relief. "Finally. No Section E. No Percy. No alarms."
He opened the front door, ready to carry me over the threshold for a "romantic" start to the weekend.Instead, he was met with a low, vibrating woof.A large, shaggy, and incredibly muddy mountain dog was sitting right in the middle of the foyer rug. It looked like a mix between a Golden Retriever and a cloud of chaos. It had one ear standing up, one flopping down, and a wagging tail that was currently hitting a $2,000$ vase like a drumstick.
11:30 AM: The Occupation
"What is that?" Keifer asked, his voice dropping into his 'Monster' tone. He stood perfectly still, looking at the dog as if it were a bomb.
"It's a dog, hubby," I said, trying to suppress my laughter. "A very muddy, very stray dog."
Astraea, however, didn't wait for an introduction. She scrambled out of my arms, hit the floor, and headed straight for the beast.
"DOGGY!" she shrieked, throwing her tiny arms around the dog's neck.
The dog didn't growl. It didn't move. It simply leaned down and gave Astraea a giant, slobbery lick across her entire face. Astraea giggled so hard she fell backward onto the rug.
"He's a stray, Dad," Alexander said, examining the dog with tactical precision. "He has no collar. He's an infiltrator. We should call him 'Ghost'."
"We are not calling him anything," Keifer said, stepping forward. "He's dirty, he's probably got fleas, and he's sitting on my Italian rug. Out. Out you go."
Keifer pointed toward the open door. The dog looked at Keifer's finger, then back at Keifer's face, and let out a happy, loud A-woooo! before jumping up and putting its muddy paws directly onto Keifer's chest.
02:00 PM: The Defeat of the Monster
Two hours later, the "Sanctuary" was no longer a quiet retreat.
I walked into the living room to find a scene I never thought I'd see. Keifer, the man who once ordered a city-wide lockdown because I had a fever, was currently sitting on the floor with a towel and a bucket of warm water.
He was scrubbing the mud off 'Ghost.'
"I thought we were kicking him out, hubby?" I asked, leaning against the doorframe with a glass of wine.
"Astraea cried, Jay," Keifer muttered, not looking up. "She did the lip-quiver. You know I can't handle the lip-quiver. And Alexander said the dog could be a 'Sentry' for the perimeter."
"Mamma! Ghost pretty!" Astraea cheered, holding a dog brush and "helping" by brushing Keifer's arm instead of the dog.
"He's a mess," Keifer grumbled, but I saw him scratch the dog behind the ears. The dog leaned into him, closing its eyes contentedly. "He's probably a professional grifter. He knew exactly which kid to charm first."
"Just like you, hubby," I teased, sitting on the sofa. "You knew exactly which doctor to charm to get your heart fixed."
08:00 PM: The Real Peace
By evening, the house was finally quiet. The fireplace was roaring, sending a warm orange glow across the room.
Alexander was asleep in a sleeping bag in front of the fire, claiming he was on "night watch." Astraea was tucked between two pillows, snoring softly. And right at the foot of their pile, Ghost was sprawled out, looking like he'd lived there for years.
Keifer sat down beside me on the oversized sofa, pulling a blanket over both of us. He looked at the kids, the dog, and the mountains outside.
"This isn't the sanctuary I planned," he whispered, pulling me into his side. "I planned on silk sheets and no interruptions."
"Plans change, Monster," I said, resting my head on his shoulder. "But look at them. I think this is the most 'sanctuary' we've ever been."
Keifer smiled, a real, peaceful one. He kissed my temple and sighed. "Fine. But the dog sleeps on the floor. Not the bed."
Five minutes later...
Ghost let out a soft whimper in his sleep. Astraea stirred and patted the space next to her. Ghost immediately stood up, hopped onto the sofa, and wedged himself right between me and Keifer.
"He's staying, isn't he?" Keifer asked, looking at the dog's head resting on his lap.
"He's already part of the security detail, hubby," I laughed, closing my eyes. "Accept your defeat."
"Savage," Keifer murmured, but he didn't move the dog. He just held me tighter, finally at home in the beautiful, muddy chaos of our life.
