Chapter 8 - Human Radar

Asteria stood suspended in an infinite vacuum, her breath hitching as she stared at the "tapestry." It wasn't just a collection of stars; it was a cosmic web of golden light, an unfathomable net of threads that seemed to bind the universe together.

'Is this what the Awakened see?' she wondered, a chill running down her spine. 'The internal architecture of the Spell... it's terrifying.'

Suddenly, words burned themselves into her vision, glowing with a cold, insistent light.

[Aspirant! Your trial is over!]

[A lowly handmaid walked through a world of golden lies. She refused the sweet nectar of the Dream and chose the bitter chill of the Truth. In the heart of a decaying palace, she became the static that broke the machine. She struck the bell of silence and shattered the messenger of an ancient hunger. The gods and daemons are dead, and yet they answered.]

[You have defeated an Awakened Devil: Messenger of -unknown-]

[You have received two Divine Blessings from: -unknown- and -unknown-!]

[You have achieved the impossible!]

[Final Appraisal: Glorious. Your eyes have seen too much, and your heart has felt too little.]

Asteria choked on a breath, her heart hammering against her ribs. 'Glorious? What the Spell... I mean, I knew I did well, but I didn't think I'd get a standing ovation from the universe. I guess being blessed by two "dead" gods has its perks.'

[Dreamer Asteria, receive your boon!]

[You have been bestowed a True Name: Queen of Nightmare.]

'Queen of Nightmare?' She suppressed a shiver. 'That sounds like a title that comes with a lot of enemies and very few friends.'

[Your Aspect and two Attributes are ready to evolve. Evolve?]

Asteria gritted her teeth, her Sarcasm-Shield flickering. 'Please, Spell. After what you just put me through, if this is anything less than Ascended, you're officially a con artist. Do it!'

[Dormant Aspect: Static Echo is evolving...]

[New Aspect acquired!]

[Aspect Rank: Divine.]

[Aspect Name: Blessed by Nightmare]

'Divine?!' Asteria's mental voice reached a pitch only dogs could hear. 'I heard Divine, right? I'm not hallucinating again? I'm not still in the kitchen with the fake orange zest?!'

Trembling, she summoned her runes.

[Aspect: Blessed by Nightmare]

Aspect Rank: Divine

Aspect Description: ["You were born of the waking world, yet you were made for the one that dreams. To you, the Nightmare is not a trial to be endured, but a sanctuary to be claimed. Where others see the end of all things, you see the intricate clockwork of a masterpiece."]

Innate Ability: [Arachnid's Gaze]

Ability Description: ["Blessed by the Spider of Fate, the Nightmare Spell is almost transparent to you. You possess a strong understanding of its hidden logic."]

'Wait... this is the perfect survival kit for this era,' she realized, a giddy, dangerous sense of relief washing over her. 'If I can see the logic of the Spell, I can see the traps before they snap. Is this the taste of freedom!?'

[You have two Attributes ready to evolve. Evolve?]

She paused. 'I've never heard of people evolving their attributes like this. Usually, you're stuck with what you're born with.' She gave it a second's thought before her pragmatic side took over. 'Actually, who cares? Go for it!'

[Evolving Attributes...]

[Attribute: Intuition has evolved.]

Attribute: [Glass Eyes]

Attribute Description: ["Your eyes are as clear as glass. You can detect the falsehood in the world and peer into hidden aspects of life."]

'Uh, cool? A bit poetic for my taste, but-'

[Attribute: Glass Eyes is reacting strongly!]

[Attribute Description for "Glass Eyes" has been updated.]

Attribute Description: ["Your eyes are as clear as glass. You can detect the falsehood in the world and peer into hidden aspects of life. You cannot be lied to, you cannot be fooled by illusions, and you cannot be unprepared."]

Asteria stared at the text. 'Damnation. That isn't just cool. That's a cheat code. I'm a walking lie-detector with paranoia.'

[Attribute: -unknown- has evolved.]

Attribute: [Heir of Dreams]

Attribute Description: ["In the beginning, there was the Dream, and the Dream was whole. Then came the Seventh, the one who was forgotten, and the Dream became a Nightmare. You are the child of that rot, the heir to the silence that follows the end of all things."]

The air in the void felt suddenly heavy. Asteria's smile faltered, replaced by a look of profound confusion. 'Wait... is this a Divine Lineage? Did I just start a clan? But... there are only six Gods? The seventh? Isn't this a major discovery?'

She thought back to the two figures in the void – the one with the shifting face and the one with the eight arms.

'The gods and daemons are dead,' she whispered, echoing the Spell's words. 'But apparently, they still have a lot to say to me.'

A deep, jagged smile finally carved its way onto her lips. It was terrifying, it was blasphemous, and it was exactly what she needed to survive the world that was waiting for her.

'Alright, Spell. You win this round. Let's see what else you've got.'

The void and the spell answered.

[The first seal is broken.]

[Awakening dormant powers.]

Asteria didn't just feel the change – she lived it. It started as a low thrum in her marrow that quickly escalated into a roaring fire. Her muscles didn't just ache; they were being pulled apart and rewoven with strands of something denser, harder, and infinitely more capable. A wave of pure, crystalline euphoria washed over her, a biological high so intense it made the "Divine Nectar" from the nightmare feel like tap water.

Every nerve ending sparked. Every drop of blood in her veins felt like it had been replaced with liquid starlight. She felt stronger, faster, and terrifyingly awake.

Then, her vision doubled.

She wasn't just looking at the void anymore; her perspective stretched, folding inward until she was looking at a landscape that shouldn't exist. This was her Soul Sea.

'What the... did a toddler get loose in my soul?'

Instead of the serene, misty ocean most Awakened described, Asteria stood before a riot of color. The water below was a shifting, rainbow prism of iridescent liquid that defied physics. Above, a massive, violet sun hung in a sky of deep indigo, casting a strange, warm glow over the entire "painting."

Orbiting the sun was a single, lonely spark of light. Her only memory. The Obsidian Glass.

'Rainbow vomit and a violet sun,' she noted, her sarcasm finally returning to its baseline. 'At least it's not boring.'

The Spell's voice cut through her daze like a cold blade.

[Awakening Aspect Ability]

'Please,' she whispered, her hands clenching in the real world. 'Something that keeps me alive. I've had enough "destiny" for one day.'

[Aspect Ability Acquired: Spell Sense]

She hurriedly summoned her runes, her eyes scanning the text with frantic excitement.

[Name: Asteria]

True Name: Queen of Nightmare

Rank: Dormant

Dream Core: Dormant

Spell Fragments: [0/1000]

'Dream Core? Spell Fragments?' Her brow furrowed. 'People are supposed to have Soul Cores and Soul Fragments. Is this what happens when you're the "Heir of Dreams"? Heh. I'm literally built different. I'm not sure if I should be proud or terrified.'

[Aspect Ability: Spell Sense]

Ability Description: [You are the spider at the center of the web. You can perceive the change of any entity or construct tethered to the Nightmare Spell. Within a range, the location and status of Spell-carriers, Nightmare Creatures, Citadels, and Active Gates are laid bare. Memories and Echoes pulse like beacons in your mind. To you, the Spell is not a mystery.]

'Jackpot,' she breathed. 'I'm a human radar. In a world full of invisible monsters and hidden traps. I'm going to be so rich.'

But the Spell wasn't finished. The golden text turned a dark, bruised shade of crimson.

[All power has a price.]

Asteria's stomach dropped. 'Damnation... Here we go. The catch. There's always a catch.'

[You have received a Flaw...]

Flaw: [The Call]

Flaw Description: [The nightmare calls to you, welcoming you home.]

Asteria stared at the runes until they blurred.

'So... I'm a human radar, but I'm also a human monster-magnet,' she summarized, a dry, hysterical laugh bubbling up in her throat. 'The Nightmare "welcomes me home"? Ridiculous.'

[Wake up, Queen of Nightmare!]

And at that moment, she saw the blistering bright light of the police station.
