Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 – The Last Downpour

The first thing I notice is the light.

Soft, warm lanterns are strung across the school courtyard, glowing gently against the dark sky. They sway slightly in the evening breeze, casting flickers of gold on the ground, on people, on everything.

For a moment, I just stand there.

It feels… different.

Not quiet like before. Not empty.

Alive.

Students move around in small groups, laughter rising and falling like waves. Music hums somewhere in the background, not too loud, just enough to fill the spaces between conversations.

I never thought I would like something like this.

Crowds. Noise. People.

Yet here I am.

Not hiding. Not leaving.

Just… staying.

"Bora!"

I turn at the sound of my name, and May appears beside me, slightly out of breath, her eyes bright.

"There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you."

"I was just here," I say.

"You say that like this place is small," she laughs, then grabs my wrist lightly. "Come on, there's so much happening."

Before I can respond, she's already pulling me forward.

For a second, the old instinct returns.

The urge to step back.

To retreat.

To stay inside something safe and familiar.

The bubble.

But it doesn't feel as strong anymore.

It's quieter now.

Like something fading.

I let her pull me along.

We walk past rows of lanterns, their light brushing softly against my skin. Somewhere, someone calls out, music shifts, and laughter follows.

It feels overwhelming.

But not in a bad way.

Not like before.

"Stay here, okay?" May says suddenly. "I'll be back. Don't disappear."

"I won't," I tell her.

And this time, I mean it.

She gives me a quick smile before disappearing into the crowd.

I exhale slowly.

And that's when I notice him.

Sam stands a little distance away, near the edge of the courtyard. He isn't doing anything in particular, just watching everything quietly, like he always does.

Like he understands this moment without needing to be part of the noise.

For a second, I hesitate.

Then I walk toward him.

Each step feels small, but certain.

When I reach him, he looks at me, and something in his expression softens.

"You stayed," he says.

"I told May I would."

"That's new."

"Yeah," I admit. "It is."

We stand there for a moment, side by side, watching the lanterns sway above us.

It's peaceful. In a strange, unfamiliar way.

"Do you like it?" he asks.

I look around again.

At the lights. The people. The movements.

"I think I do," I say quietly.

And I realize I'm not lying.

He smiles, just a little.

Before I can say anything else a drop of water lands on my hand.

I blink.

Then another.

And another.

The first few drops are light, almost unnoticeable.

But within seconds, the sky opens.

Rain begins to fall.

At first, people laugh, running for cover, calling out to each other. The music cuts off abruptly, replaced by the steady sound of rain hitting the ground.

The lanterns flicker but stay lit, their glow now blurred through the falling water.

"It's raining," I say, unnecessarily.

"Yeah," Sam replies.

But neither of us moves.

Not immediately.

The rain grows heavier, soaking through my sleeves, my hair, everything. The coolness spreads across my skin, but I don't step back.

I don't run.

Something about this moment feels… important.

Sam glances toward the building. "We should probably go inside."

But I shake my head. "Wait."

He pauses.

Looks at me.

And stays.

The rain falls harder now, louder, like it's trying to drown everything else out.

For a moment, neither of us speaks.

Then he says quietly,

"Maybe we should let it wash everything away."

I look at him.

"Everything?"

"All the confusion," he says. "All the things we didn't want to stay with."

The words settle somewhere deep inside me.

I think about everything.

The distance.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The bubble.

For so long, it felt like protection.

Like safety.

But now— It feels like something that kept me from living.

I inhale slowly.

The rain fills the silence between us.

"Yeah," I say softly. "Let's end it with this last downpour."

He watches me for a second, like he's making sure I really mean it.

Then he nods.

"There's one more thing," he says.

My heart begins to beat faster.

"What is it?"

For the first time since I met him, he hesitates.

Just slightly.

Then he looks at me, steady and sincere.

"Bora… can I be your boyfriend?"

The world doesn't stop.

The rain doesn't pause.

Nothing dramatic happens.

And yet—

Everything feels like it's changed.

The question is simple.

Honest.

Real.

A few months ago, I would have stepped back.

Hidden.

Pretended I didn't hear it.

Gone back into my bubble.

But now....

I don't want to.

I don't want to hide anymore.

So I smile.

A small one.

But real.

"Yes."

The word leaves me before I can overthink it.

Before fear can catch up.

Before anything can stop me.

His expression softens, something warm and relieved settling into it.

His hand finds mine.

It's warm, even in the rain.

And for a moment, everything feels quiet.

Not around us.

But inside me.

Then—

I hear it.

Soft.

Faint.

A tiny sound that no one else notices.

Pop.

I freeze for a second.

Not because I'm scared.

But because I understand.

The bubble.

It's gone.

Not shattered.

Not broken violently.

Just… gone.

Like it was never meant to stay.

The rain continues to fall, but it feels different now.

Lighter.

Clearer.

Like something has finally been released.

Sam tilts his head slightly.

"You okay?"

I nod.

"Yeah," I say softly.

And this time-

I really am.
