Shadows and Sparks

The training chamber was silent and sterile, yet brimming with latent tension. Every wall, every panel, every shadow seemed to watch, waiting.

Arjun stood at the center, muscles coiled, breath measured. His HUD flickered to life, cascading data across his vision like rain: heart rate – 56 bpm, adrenaline – baseline, muscle readiness – 98%, environmental scan – optimal.

"Arjun Pratap Singh: Level Alpha-Operative. Efficiency – 99.7%."

He flexed his fingers, feeling the familiar hum of precision. Today's drill was routine—but routine was relative. In this world, perfection was survival.

From the observation deck, Atlas entered. Slightly taller, broader, but with a slower cadence. His HUD stats weren't visible to Arjun, but experience told him everything: reaction time – 0.12 sec slower than optimal, accuracy—92%, endurance – high but not peak. Atlas was skilled—remarkably skilled—but he existed as a benchmark, a living reference to measure Arjun's own limits.

"Ready, Arjun?" Atlas asked, calm and controlled.

Arjun's HUD highlighted him in green: friendly operative, level beta. The chamber lights dimmed. Shadows stretched across the room, targets emerged, and the simulation began.

Arjun moved as if reading the room's heartbeat, anticipating every motion before it happened.

PING. PING.

Targets neutralised. HUD efficiency: 100% precision. Atlas performed admirably, but Arjun's movements were seamless, almost prescient.

Then, the alert appeared.

The word VEIL pulsed across his vision. No stats. No metrics. Just the sense of a presence that defied measurement. This was no ordinary enemy. It was the meta-level threat they all feared—the unknown variable that could overwrite skill, strategy, and even reality itself.

Arjun's eyes narrowed. He had trained for everything measurable. Every known risk. Every conceivable tactic. But THE VEIL? It was a puzzle beyond numbers, a ghost in the system.

Atlas noticed the shift. "That's… new."

"Not new," Arjun muttered. His HUD overlaid tactical grids, engagement zones, and exit points—but nothing quantified THE VEIL.

And that was the point.

The chamber lights brightened. Simulation ended. Efficiency logs, kill ratios, and reaction times—all recorded. Arjun's stats dominated the charts. Atlas's performance was strong but secondary. And the name THE VEIL lingered at the edge of their minds, unmeasurable, unstoppable, waiting.

For the first time, Arjun felt a thrill that numbers couldn't define.

This was the real beginning.
