Chapter 19 - 19) Broken Feathers (4)

Sophist looked down at the building he was just in a few moments ago, the entity behind him. "That wasn't very villainous of you," it stated.

"She just needed a slight push, that's all," Sophist replied.

The remaining gorillas and Baradoosh slowly advanced towards the building. The last falcon was circling above, a small plasma rifle mounted on his harness, and perched on a pile of rubble was a rabbit with a sniper rifle trained on Hawkgirl's chest.

"Stay down, Hawkgirl," Satanna said.

Hawkgirl laughed, the sound weak and with pain but defiant. She pressed her hands against the wall behind her and pushed, her legs slightly trembling and her eyes still red.

"No. I don't think I will," she replied.

"Foolish," Satanna answered.

"You're probably right, but that's what I do." Hawkgirl spread her wings, her joints screaming in pain, and then she lifted off. Not high and not gracefully. She was wobbling around like you'd expect a wounded bird to.

From above the falcon shrieked and dove, plasma fire raining down, leaving a trail of scorch marks on the ground below.

"Adjust left. Fire!" The rabbit's voice crackled through the comms.

Hawkgirl banked hard, the strain in her wings making it so she was unable to go any higher. She weaved between buildings, and the falcon followed.

"Lost visual, switching to thermal," the rabbit reported.

Hawkgirl pulled up sharply, and she could feel her muscles around her wings tear as she held back her scream and pushed through a broken office window.

The falcon followed, only a few seconds behind. The office building was tightly packed, with desks and cubicle walls across the entire floor, and the lights were flickering.

Hawkgirl retracted her wings and hid behind a pillar, and while the falcon searched and started to turn her corner, she dashed out and swung her mace, the impact spinning the falcon sideways. She drove him to and pinned him down, one knee on his chest, the other on one of his wings.

His beak snapped at her face, clipped her exposed cheek, blood slowly seeping out. Hawkgirl headbutted him. Once. Twice. His eyes rolled back; he was down for the count.

"I really need to stop headbutting people so much," she muttered to herself, holding her head. She stumbled to her feet, her awkward movement throwing the rabbit off, a powerful shot flying past her.

Hawkgirl dived and flew out the side window as the rabbit scrambled with his rifle. In a matter of seconds she reached the rabbit, but he was also fast. He pivoted and pulled out a sidearm.

Hawkgirl's knee caught him in the ribs before he could fire, and he folded with a wheeze, unable to get back up.

Hawkgirl returned to the ground. She only had ten seconds to breathe before Baradoosh roared, charging towards her at a surprisingly fast speed.

Each step made the surrounding cars bounce as he ploughed through a bus stop, not stopping for anything that got in his way.

Hawkgirl jumped onto his back, gripping onto the edges of his armour plates. He bellowed and started to slam his back into a building wall. Hawkgirl held on, her strength barely enough.

Baradoosh did it again and again, each impact rattling her bones and weakening her grip.

Hawkgirl whipped her fist around and slammed it into Baradoosh's throat. He choked and grabbed his throat as his legs buckled. Instead of falling down, he spun, his horn catching Hawkgirl's side and sending her launching off his back, her mace falling to the ground.

Hawkgirl rolled along the pavement and came up gasping. Baradoosh shook himself.

They both stared at the mace, now on the floor. Baradoosh charged first. Hawkgirl recalled her mace, her fingers closing around the handle and turning sideways.

Baradoosh's horn missed by only a few inches before his head was sent spinning with a strike to the face.

A gorilla ripped off a car door, throwing it towards Hawkgirl like a frisbee, catching Hawkgirl across the shoulders. She staggered, and before she could recover, another gorilla performed a flying tackle that drove them both through a pharmacy window.

They crashed through aisles of medication, trading brutal strikes for a moment before Hawkgirl drove her elbow into his throat and then slammed his head into the counter.

The last gorilla flanked. Hawkgirl used her wing to shove the gorilla crashing into another aisle before bursting out of the pharmacy.

Baradoosh was already mid-charge, catching Hawkgirl with a blow from his shoulder, the impact sending her tumbling across the street.

Pain echoed through her ribs. The two remaining gorillas flanked while Baradoosh circled. Hawkgirl forced herself up, wings trembling along with her legs as blood ran into her eye.

The third gorilla shook his head, barely conscious, before getting back into the fight.

One rushed from the left, Hawkgirl turning to meet him while the second came from the right. The third stayed back and started to hurl objects towards her with precision.

Hawkgirl caught the first gorilla with a mace strike that sent him sprawling, but before she could follow up, Baradoosh was there, his horn lowered.

Hawkgirl launched herself upwards, the horn only piercing air, and then she came down onto the second gorilla's shoulders, her momentum driving him face-first into the pavement. He went limp.

She also hit the ground hard, stumbling and almost falling. The last gorilla had rushed forwards, now grabbing Hawkgirl in a crushing bear hug, pinning her arms and wings.

"NOW!" he shouted.

Baradoosh charged. Hawkgirl threw her head back, crunching the gorilla's nose, his grip loosening slightly. She twisted with desperate strength and used the gorilla's body as a shield.

Baradoosh tried to stop, but the momentum still caught them both, sending them flying. The gorilla was unconscious while Hawkgirl skidded across the floor; the impact was somewhat dampened.

Plasma fire erupted along Hawkgirl's wing.

"You're in the way of my sanctuary. Just stay down already!" Satanna snarled.

"I've lived 5000 years not giving up; I'm not going to stop for a housecat. I've made my choice today, and I decided that I will make damn sure you see a prison cell for the rest of your life," Hawkgirl replied.
