Chapter 17 - The Rift Beast

The Rift Beast towered over the battlefield, its body shifting between shadow and light, as if it were caught between two worlds. Its glowing eyes locked onto Akira's team, and a guttural roar echoed through the Rift Zone, shaking the unstable ground.

"What is that thing?" Kazuki muttered, sparks crackling around his fists.

"A manifestation of the boundary," Mira said, her voice calm but urgent. "The council must have known this could happen. It's drawn to the Rift's instability—and to us."

The creature lunged, moving with unnatural speed for something so massive. Its clawed limbs slashed at the ground, leaving glowing fissures in their wake.

"Move!" Akira shouted, igniting his blade as he dove out of the way.

The ground exploded where the Rift Beast struck, sending shards of rock flying. Rika raised her barrier just in time to shield herself and Mira, the impact rippling against the translucent dome.

"We can't outrun it!" Rika called. "We have to fight!"

Akira stood, flames roaring around him as he faced the creature. "Alright. Mira, call out its movements. Rika, keep us protected. Kazuki, hit it hard. Let's take this thing down."

Kazuki grinned. "Finally, something big enough to deserve my attention."

The battle began in earnest.

The Rift Beast lunged at Akira, its claws glowing with chaotic energy. He met the attack head-on, his flaming blade colliding with its claws in a burst of heat and light. The force of the clash sent Akira skidding backward, but he stayed on his feet, his flames burning brighter.

Kazuki darted in from the side, his electric Sigil crackling with power. "Hey, ugly!" he shouted, hurling a bolt of lightning at the creature. The energy struck its flank, eliciting a roar of rage as the beast swiped at him.

Kazuki dodged nimbly, sparks trailing behind him. "Missed me!"

Mira's shadowy sigil wrapped around the creature's legs, slowing its movements. "It's focusing on Akira and Kazuki. Rika, keep them covered. Akira, aim for its core, the glowing point on its chest."

"Got it!" Akira said, flames surging around him as he charged.

The Rift Beast reared back, its chest glowing brighter as energy began to gather there.

"Watch out!" Mira shouted. "It's charging an attack!"

The beast unleashed a devastating beam of chaotic energy, carving a glowing scar into the ground. Akira barely managed to leap to the side, his heart pounding as the heat of the blast scorched the air.

Rika's barrier shimmered into place, deflecting the residual energy from the beam. "We need to take it down before it does that again!"

Kazuki nodded. "On it!"

He darted toward the creature, his electric Sigil flaring. Lightning surged around his fists as he leapt, driving both fists into the Rift Beast's side. The impact sent a shockwave through its body, causing it to stagger.

"Now, Akira!" Kazuki shouted.

Akira sprinted forward, flames coiling around his blade as he aimed for the glowing core on the creature's chest. The Rift Beast roared, swiping at him with its claws, but Mira's tendrils yanked its arm just enough to throw off its aim.

With a fierce cry, Akira drove his blade into the core, flames exploding outward in a brilliant burst of light.

The Rift Beast howled, its body convulsing as cracks spread across its shadowy form. Energy leaked from the fissures, and the creature began to collapse, dissolving into a swirling vortex of light and shadow.

The battlefield fell silent, the air still crackling with residual energy.

Akira stumbled back, extinguishing his blade as he caught his breath. "Is it… over?"

"For now," Mira said, her voice steady despite the tension in her gaze. "But the boundary is still unstable. More creatures could appear if we don't secure the Rift."

Rika nodded, lowering her barrier. "Then we finish this."

The final marker loomed ahead, glowing brighter with each step they took. The energy radiating from the Rift was intense, the air humming with power.

As they approached, a new wave of students emerged from the shadows—three teams, their sigils flaring as they prepared to fight.

"This is it," Akira said, flames igniting around his hands.

Kazuki grinned. "Time to show them why we're the ones to beat."

Mira's voice was determined. "Stick to the plan. Control the field, protect the marker, and take down anyone who gets in our way."

Rika raised her barrier, her teal eyes blazing with resolve. "Let's finish this."

The opposing teams charged, their sigils lighting up the battlefield. Akira's flames roared to life as he met them head-on, his blade cutting through the chaos.

The fight for the Rift and for their future had begun.
