After the standoff continued for a few more rings, Zane Jennings turned off his phone.
He tossed the phone onto the sofa, turned around, and walked toward her.
A shadow fell over her. Erin Lowell's movements paused for a moment as she was putting her things away. She closed the lid of the medical kit before looking up. "Even if you don't like it, there's nothing I can do. I don't make exceptions here—"
"Erin Lowell!"
She saw his gaze. It was like jade shrouded in winter fog—hazy but not dull, and heavy with emotion.
"I—"
Someone's phone—it was hard to tell whose—suddenly rang again, cutting off the words on the tip of his tongue.
Erin Lowell was silent for a moment, her eyes darting away with a hint of relief. She pulled the still-vibrating phone from her coat pocket, glanced at it, and answered the call.
The person on the other end spoke for about half a minute. Her brows furrowed slightly as she replied, "I'll be there in twenty minutes."
