The first portal appeared on a wall in the third floor of an office building. A room filled with stock brokers.
It was like a gateway. Its height about 8ft tall and its width 6ft.
Its greenish color flowing edge to edge like a wake in the sea.
It was 11:28 in the morning. Everyone focusing on their workload.
Someone called the attention of everyone to the mystery on the wall. It was like a freshly painted, live graffiti has the wavelike pattern moved from each end to the other end. Some would say the sight was beautiful and captivating.
"Who pulled this stunt?" Mikel asked.
He was one of the HR managers in the firm.
"Who is trying to be funny" he added with a dent of vexation in his voice as he walked closer to the portal.
He wasn't angry. Deep down admired the way the patterns moved. "It was a pure work of art" he thought to himself.
He extended his hands, reaching out to the portal. Hoping it was erasable.
No pain. No scream. Just a pile of ashes on the floor as the workers looked in awe.
He didn't burn but had turned to a pile of ash.
They all looked with confusion written all over their faces.
"What just happened?" a voice echoed amongst the crowd.
Another portal emerged in the middle of the room turning the people who stood there to ashes.
Chaos erupted. Body slammed and screams echo across the room as everyone tried to fighting their way out.
By the end of the day, there were twelve portals worldwide.
Nothing came out of them. Nothing crossed over. They simply existed – wormholes on earth.
Government agencies tried destroying them. Bombs, missiles fired at it all vanished when it got in contact with the portal without making any impact. They couldn't explain what it was nor could they destroy it. The called it the abnormally and warned her citizens not to go close to them.
Month passed. They were hundreds of portals spread all over the world.
Slowly, the panic cooled. People kept their distance. Cities built walls around it. Streets rerouted. Life reorganized itself around the arc of death.
The world adapted the way it always did – by pretending the impossible was normal.
A year later.
The sky was still cloudy after the downpour. The rain was drizzling like showers of blessings falling from the sky.
Vince had boarded a bus has he was heading home. The bus had eighteen passengers including the driver. He sat at the back. His ear piece plugged in his hears and his heard leaning on the window has he tried to relax after a long day from work. He felt at peace for the moment.
Within a blink of an eye, an abnormally with no warning appeared in the middle of the road. It was different from the rest of the portal. It had a glowing blue wave flowing from edge to edge.
The bus echoed with screams from the passengers. The driver hits the brake but the tires made a squealing sound due to the wet road. The bus was slowing down but would not stop before the portal. The abnormally had appeared 3ft in front of the bus.
The bus disintegrated instantly upon collision with the abnormally but the passengers went through.
It was like a gateway that only let humans in but destroys any other thing.
Few seconds after the collision, the abnormally returned to its normal greenish wavy pattern flowing from edge to edge.
The on lookers and passer by didn't understand what happened. The all felt that the bus and its passengers had met their demise in a cruel yet not painful way. Little did they know that for the first time, someone crossed the threshold and lived.
Somewhere beyond human sight, a realm filled with magic, powers and monsters had awakened.
