Chapter 5 – Foundations and the One-Month Deadline
The morning sunlight filtered through the carved windows of the Lin Clan's training courtyard, scattering warm patterns across the stone tiles. Lin Huang stood barefoot in the center of the yard, his small body still faintly sore from the previous night's cultivation. The aftereffects of his awakening had not fully faded; the marrow-cleaning process had left behind a lingering heat in his bones, a sensation both uncomfortable and strangely invigorating.
He exhaled slowly.
The air flowed into his chest, deep and steady, following the rhythm his grandfather had taught him.
Inhale.Hold.Exhale.
Each breath seemed to sink deeper than before, brushing against something hidden within him.
A faint warmth stirred in his lower abdomen, subtle and fleeting, vanishing the moment he tried to grasp it.
Lin Huang opened his eyes.
"…Was that my imagination?"
He frowned slightly, then shook his head. Whatever it was, it was too early to draw conclusions. His body was still adapting to the changes from the first stage of body cultivation. For now, discipline mattered more than curiosity.
Footsteps approached from behind.
"You're up early again."
Lin Zhenyuan's voice carried a calm authority. The man's tall figure cast a long shadow over the courtyard as he stopped a few steps away. His six-tailed Imperial Fox Spirit Martial Soul was not summoned, but the pressure of a high-level Soul Master still lingered naturally around him.
"Father."Lin Huang straightened and bowed instinctively.
Lin Zhenyuan nodded, eyes briefly sweeping over his son's posture and breathing rhythm. "Your foundation is stable. Better than I expected for someone your age."
There was no exaggeration in his tone.
Lin Huang felt a small surge of pride, but before he could say anything, his father continued:
"However, do not let that make you reckless. I've discussed it with your grandfather. You will not be entering the Star Dou Forest immediately."
Lin Huang froze.
"…Not yet?"
"Not yet," Lin Zhenyuan repeated. "Your body cultivation has only just entered its second stage. Your Soul Power may be high for your age, but Star Dou is not a playground for talent alone. You will train for one full month. After that, we'll reassess."
One month.
Lin Huang lowered his head slightly. He understood the logic, but impatience still tugged at his heart. The thought of obtaining his first Soul Ring, of stepping into the real world of Soul Masters, burned brightly within him.
His father placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Strength that grows too fast often breaks. Remember that."
"…I understand."
Satisfied, Lin Zhenyuan turned and gestured toward the inner halls. "Come. Your grandfather is waiting. Today, you'll begin studying Bestial Spirits and compatible Soul Rings. If you don't understand what you're hunting, your talent means nothing."
The Lin Clan's library was a towering structure of stone and wood, its interior lined with countless shelves filled with ancient records, Beast Codices, and cultivation manuals. The air carried the faint scent of ink and old parchment.
Lin Tianhe stood near one of the long tables, his expression calm but his eyes bright with quiet excitement.
"You're finally here, little fox."
Lin Huang smiled faintly. "Grandfather."
Lin Tianhe chuckled. "Don't look so tense. If knowledge could bite, this place would be more dangerous than Star Dou."
He waved his hand, and several thick books floated over, landing on the table with dull thuds.
"These are basic records of Soul Beasts within the outer zones of Star Dou Forest. Their habitats, temperaments, and compatibility with different Spirit Martial Souls."
Lin Huang's eyes lit up.
He carefully opened the first book.
Illustrations of various Soul Beasts filled the pages:wind-type wolves, flame-scaled serpents, crystal-horned deer, shadow cats lurking in the underbrush.
"Not all Soul Rings are equal," Lin Tianhe said slowly. "Power is only one factor. Compatibility decides whether your Spirit Martial Soul grows smoothly or becomes distorted. Our Imperial Fox lineage values adaptability, illusion, vitality, and spiritual perception. You must choose carefully."
Lin Huang nodded seriously, memorizing every word.
As he turned page after page, he began to realize just how vast the forest truly was. Even in the outer zones alone, thousands of species existed, each with its own strengths, weaknesses, and hidden dangers.
"Grandfather…"He hesitated before asking, "If someone forces a Soul Ring that doesn't match their Spirit Martial Soul… what happens?"
Lin Tianhe's gaze sharpened slightly. "At best, their growth becomes inefficient. At worst, their Spirit Martial Soul mutates, becomes unstable… or collapses entirely."
Lin Huang swallowed.
This was no game.
The following days settled into a strict rhythm.
Morning: body cultivation training.Afternoon: Soul Power circulation and breathing exercises.Evening: study in the library.
His body screamed in protest more than once.
Muscles burned. Bones ached. His blood felt as though it were being tempered by invisible flames. Yet with every day that passed, Lin Huang could feel subtle changes. His movements became smoother. His senses sharper. His endurance increased in small but undeniable steps.
One evening, while practicing his breathing technique in solitude, something strange happened.
As he entered a deeper state of focus, a faint pressure spread from his chest, flowing toward his back.
For an instant—
It felt as though something unseen unfurled behind him.
Not physically.
More like a shadow of a presence.
His heart skipped a beat, and the sensation vanished.
Lin Huang's eyes snapped open.
"…That feeling again."
He pressed a hand against his chest, breathing slowly. The warmth from earlier returned, faintly, almost playfully, before settling into stillness.
Is it my Spirit Martial Soul reacting to the breathing technique?
The thought lingered in his mind, refusing to fade.
At dinner, the atmosphere was calmer.
Lin Yueqin watched her son closely, her gentle eyes filled with concern. "You're pushing yourself too hard. Your appetite has dropped."
"I'm fine, Mother."Lin Huang forced a small smile. "It doesn't hurt that much."
Lin Zhenyuan snorted softly. "Lying to your mother is a skill you haven't mastered yet."
Lin Huang lowered his head in embarrassment.
Lin Tianhe laughed heartily. "Let him be. Pain is the language of growth. As long as he doesn't break himself, a little suffering is healthy."
Lin Yueqin sighed but said nothing more.
After the meal, Lin Huang returned to his room. Sitting cross-legged on the bed, he closed his eyes and followed the breathing rhythm once more.
This time, he did not chase the strange sensation.
He let it come… and go.
Deep within him, something stirred quietly, as though responding to his calm acceptance.
…There's more inside me than what I've shown,he thought.I can feel it.
And though he didn't fully understand it yet, Lin Huang knew—
This month of preparation was only the beginning.
Beyond the walls of the Lin Clan, the Star Dou Forest waited.
