Chapter 12 - Reputation

Arjun did not panic.

That was the first difference.

When he read the message about his reputation, he didn't start calling people or sending defensive texts. He didn't post anything online. He didn't rush to confront Riya immediately. He sat still for a few minutes, reading the line again.

It will be about your reputation.

That meant damage would not come through banks or documents.

It would come through people.

The next morning, he woke up early and checked his phone before even getting out of bed.

No missed calls.

No viral posts.

No tags.

But that didn't mean nothing had started.

He got ready as usual and reached office at 9:05 a.m. Sameer was already at his desk.

"Morning," Sameer said casually.

"Morning," Arjun replied.

Sameer looked at him for a second longer than usual. "Everything okay?"

"Yes," Arjun said.

Sameer nodded slowly but didn't look fully convinced.

At 10:17 a.m., Arjun's phone buzzed.

A message from a colleague in a different team.

Bro, random question. Are you engaged?

Arjun stared at the message.

His fingers didn't move for a few seconds.

He typed back.

No.

Three dots appeared.

Oh. Just heard something. Ignore if wrong.

Arjun didn't reply.

His chest felt tight, but his face stayed calm.

Five minutes later, another message came. This time from an old college friend.

Congrats bro. Why didn't you tell us?

Arjun's jaw tightened.

He typed again.

There's nothing to congratulate.

The friend responded almost instantly.

Riya posted something. Thought it was official.

Arjun opened Instagram slowly.

He searched her profile.

The story wasn't visible to him.

Which meant she had restricted him.

He switched to Sameer's phone.

"Let me see your Instagram," he said casually.

Sameer raised an eyebrow but handed it over.

Arjun searched Riya's profile again.

This time, the story appeared.

A picture of her hand holding a ring.

Caption:

Sometimes commitment needs courage.

Below that, a poll:

Do you believe in second chances?

Arjun's stomach turned.

There was no name mentioned.

But the implication was clear.

Sameer looked at him carefully. "That's about you?"

Arjun handed the phone back. "It's about attention."

Sameer frowned. "You should respond."

"No," Arjun said. "That's what she wants."

Sameer leaned back. "Then what?"

Arjun's voice stayed steady. "Evidence."

By lunch, the rumors had moved offline.

Two colleagues from finance looked at him strangely when he walked past.

Someone whispered as he entered the pantry.

At 2:45 p.m., HR called him again.

This time, it wasn't about salary verification.

It was about a complaint.

He sat across from the same HR executive as before.

"We received an informal concern," she said carefully. "Regarding personal relationship misconduct."

Arjun's expression didn't change.

"Explain," he said.

"An anonymous email alleges that you pressured a former partner into financial commitment," she said. "And are now threatening her career."

Arjun stared at her calmly.

"May I see the email?" he asked.

She hesitated, then turned the screen slightly toward him.

The email was vague but sharp.

Words like manipulation. Coercion. Control.

His name mentioned clearly.

Riya's not mentioned directly—but implied.

"When was this sent?" he asked.

"Yesterday evening," she replied.

Arjun nodded once.

"Do you have proof of consent in all financial matters?" she asked carefully.

"Yes," he said. "And proof of forgery."

He opened his phone, showed the cancellation documents, the bank objection, the verification email.

He didn't speak fast.

He didn't get emotional.

He explained clearly.

By the end of the meeting, HR looked uncomfortable.

"We'll close this unless further evidence appears," she said.

"It won't," Arjun replied calmly.

He walked out of the room.

Sameer stood up immediately. "What happened?"

"She escalated," Arjun said.

Sameer's face darkened. "I'll handle her."

"No," Arjun replied sharply. "You won't."

"Why?"

"Because she wants reaction," Arjun said. "And I'm not giving it."

At 6:12 p.m., Arjun received a call from an unknown number again.

This time he answered immediately.

"Hello."

A familiar voice spoke.

"Arjun," Riya said.

"You changed numbers," he replied calmly.

"You blocked my main one," she said.

"I didn't," he replied.

There was a pause.

"I know you went to HR," she said.

"They called me," he replied.

"You made me look unstable," she snapped.

"You made yourself look unstable," he said evenly.

Silence.

"You think you're winning?" she asked.

"There is no competition," he replied.

"You could've just let this go," she said.

"You used my name," he replied.

"And you could've just trusted me," she shot back.

That line almost made him laugh.

"Trust isn't retroactive," he said.

Her breathing grew heavier.

"You think people will believe you?" she asked quietly.

"I don't need everyone to," he replied. "Just the right ones."

She hung up.

At 8:03 p.m., the unknown number messaged again.

Unknown:

She's not done.

Arjun replied.

Arjun:

I know.

Pause.

Then:

Unknown:

Tomorrow she files something official.

Arjun's fingers paused.

Arjun:

What kind?

The reply came slower.

Unknown:

Harassment.

Arjun stared at the screen.

That was different.

That was serious.

The next morning, he didn't wait.

He went directly to a lawyer's office before work.

He explained everything.

Documents. Forgery. Loan attempt. HR complaint.

The lawyer listened quietly.

"Do you have written evidence of your objections?" the lawyer asked.

"Yes," Arjun replied.

"Good," the lawyer said. "If she files harassment, we respond with documentary proof of fraud attempt."

Arjun nodded.

He wasn't afraid anymore.

He was prepared.

At 11:26 a.m., his phone buzzed again.

Same unknown number.

Unknown:

She just left the legal office.

Arjun's pulse stayed steady.

Arjun:

How do you know?

Pause.

Then:

Unknown:

Because I was there.

Arjun stared at the message.

Arjun:

Why are you involved?

The typing dots appeared.

Stopped.

Then the reply came.

Unknown:

Because I'm not just watching this happen.

I'm the one she's blaming you to.

Arjun felt something shift.

That meant—

This wasn't just damage control.

Someone else was being fed a version of him that didn't exist.

And the next move…

Wouldn't be silent.
