Chapter 59: The Rat Girl's Grandfather Sends His Regards

The fast food bag hit the pavement.

Rango was moving before it landed.

The tree line was forty yards from the table. He covered it in seconds that didn't add up correctly, McQueen's gift doing what it did when intention and urgency aligned — the world going slightly soft at the edges, distance becoming a negotiation rather than a fact.

He cleared the landscaping buffer and entered the trees and the red dress was gone.

Not at the restroom. Not at the far end of the parking lot. Gone into the actual woods, the decorative strip giving way to something real and dense behind the service area fence, and the underbrush had been broken recently — big, heavy, something moving fast and not caring about the noise it made.

He followed the broken line.

The werewolf had been fast.

Not Luke-from-the-Shadow-Hunters fast — that had been controlled, disciplined, a person who happened to be a werewolf and kept the two things compartmentalized. This was different. This was an old animal running on old instinct, gray-furred and tattered, carrying Emma by the back of her collar the way a dog carries something it intends to bring home, crashing through branches with the single-minded momentum of something that had done this before and expected to finish.

Emma was not crying.

She was calculating.

Rango could see it in her face when he broke through the last line of trees and found them — the werewolf slowing near a massive oak, a structure visible in the upper branches, crude but deliberate. A place it returned to. A place it considered safe.

The werewolf was talking. Low, eerie, the specific register of something that has separated justification from action so completely that the justification has become ritual.

"—don't blame me, you can only blame yourself for the red—"

Rango hit it at full speed.

The impact took both of them through thirty feet of forest, the werewolf's grip on Emma gone in the first instant of contact, trees splintering where they connected and bounced and connected again. The sound was considerable.

He got the thing by the scruff — actual fur, coarse and rank — and ran it into a granite outcropping that had been sitting in these woods for considerably longer than either of them and was prepared to continue doing so.

The werewolf made a sound.

He ran it into the granite again.

The sound it made the second time was different — higher, animal, the specific frequency of something that has recalibrated the situation and arrived at new conclusions about its prospects.

By the third impact it had shifted back into human form — old, white-haired, naked, bleeding from several places where the rock had made decisions about the structural integrity of his face.

Emma appeared from the tree line at a run, stopped when she saw the scene, and assessed it with the quick pragmatism she'd developed for situations that would have frozen other children.

"Don't look at this part," Rango said.

"I'm not a baby," Emma said, and looked at the old man on the ground anyway.

Rango stepped between her and the werewolf with the practiced ease of someone repositioning furniture. "Check if you're hurt. Anywhere he touched you."

Emma ran her hands along her arms, her collar where the bite had caught fabric. "He got my dress. Not me."

"Good." He kept his eyes on the werewolf. "Talk to me about the tree house."

Emma had been up there already in her mind — he could see it in the way her eyes moved to the oak and stayed. She stepped close and said something quiet, two or three words, and his expression changed.

He looked at the tree house. Looked at the old man on the ground.

Then he pulled the zip ties from his jacket pocket — he'd started carrying them after the Anna situation, Amos's ongoing lesson about the value of options that didn't require a body — and secured the werewolf's wrists and ankles to a root system that wasn't going anywhere.

"Stay," he said, which was unnecessary, but he said it anyway.

Then he crouched down and let Emma climb onto his back.

The tree house smelled like something had been living in it for years without windows.

Rango got over the sill with Emma still on his back, set her down, and let his eyes adjust.

Cans. Bottles. A sleeping bag that had given up. And on the cot in the corner, tied at the wrists with cord, a girl roughly Emma's size, eyes closed, breathing shallow but present.

He crossed to her and started on the cord.

The girl woke up the way frightened things wake up — all at once, no gradual return, from sleep to full alert with nothing between. She scrambled back against the wall and for just a second — less than a second, a fraction that Rango's Amos-blessed eyes caught and filed — her face went wrong. Not human-wrong. Something older, something that lived in different infrastructure, a narrow face with whiskers and dark quick eyes that processed threat-assessment faster than a child's face should.

Then human again. Small, thin, maybe nine years old, watching him from the corner.

"We're not with the wolf," Rango said. "He's zip-tied to a tree root approximately thirty feet down and bleeding from his forehead. You're safe."

The girl looked at Emma.

Emma looked back at her with the direct, non-judgmental attention of someone who had her own relationship with being other than what she appeared and understood that this was not the moment to make it complicated.

"I'm Emma," she said.

The girl's shoulders came down half an inch. "Anya."

"Do you know the way home from here?"

"Yes." Said immediately, with the confidence of someone who'd been memorizing the route since the moment she was taken. "I know exactly."

Rango stepped back from the cot and took one more look around the tree house — the cabinet against the wall, which he opened, and which contained what he'd suspected it might contain based on what Emma had told him at the base of the tree: a collection of red dresses, carefully folded, sized for children. Several of them.

He closed the cabinet.

Stood for a moment with his hand on the door.

How many, he didn't say out loud, and where are they.

He took his phone out and called Ted.

"Service area," he said. "East side, past the fence line, into the woods. There's a large oak with a structure in the upper branches. I need you to call it in — not the local PD, the number Amos gave us for the northeastern supernatural liaison office. Tell them what they're looking for. The werewolf is secured at the base." A pause. "Tell them to bring someone who handles evidence for the other kind of case. The cabinet inside."

He hung up. Helped Anya down from the tree house first, then Emma.

At the base of the oak, the old man was still zip-tied to the root system. He'd been crying, quietly and steadily, in the specific way of someone who had stopped pretending the situation was recoverable.

Rango stood over him.

"You said this was the first time," he said.

The old man said nothing.

Rango looked at the tree house.

"It wasn't," he said.

Back through the woods in silence. Anya walked between Emma and Rango with her hands at her sides, not touching either of them, maintaining a precise six inches of personal space — the habit of someone who had learned early that proximity was a negotiation and not an assumption.

Emma, after about ninety seconds of this, reached over and took Anya's hand without asking.

Anya looked at the joined hands.

Looked at Emma.

Didn't pull away.

Back at the service area, Ted was already on the phone. Megan had moved McQueen to the far end of the parking lot — better sight lines to the fence line, Rango noted, which was the right call — and had a blanket from the trunk that she wrapped around Anya's shoulders with the efficient gentleness of someone who had done triage before and knew what the first five minutes needed to look like.

Anya accepted it. Looked at Megan. Looked at all of them.

Then she looked at Rango with the seriousness of a child who has decided that an adult has earned a specific kind of accounting.

"I need to tell my grandfather," she said. "He'll want to know who helped me."

"You don't need to—"

"He'll want to," she said again, firmer. The grammar of someone correcting a misunderstanding rather than arguing. "Where can he find you?"

Rango considered this. Thought about the cabinet in the tree house. Thought about Anya's face in that fraction of a second when she'd woken up — the whiskers, the quick dark eyes, the assessment speed that didn't belong to a nine-year-old human.

Thought about what kind of community kept track of its own. What a grandfather who raised a child like this might be. What network she came from and what it might mean to be known within it.

"Natural History Museum," he said. "New York. Night shift. Ask for Rango."

Anya filed this the way she'd filed the route home — completely, immediately, with no repetition needed.

"Okay." She handed the blanket back to Megan, folded, which was the kind of detail that stayed with you. "Thank you."

Then she turned and walked toward the road with the purposeful calm of someone who knew exactly where they were going and had no intention of being detained on the way.

Emma watched her go.

"She didn't tell us what she is," Emma said.

"No," Rango agreed.

"Did you see?"

He looked at her.

"I see things differently than most people," he said, which was true and was also as much as he was prepared to say on the subject. "So do you. That's not always something that needs to be named out loud."

Emma absorbed this. Nodded once, slowly, in the way she nodded when she was filing something rather than agreeing with it.

Ted appeared from the direction of the fence line, pocketing his phone. "Liaison office is forty minutes out. They said the cabinet —" He stopped. Looked at Rango. "They said thank you."

"They shouldn't," Rango said.

He picked up the fast food bag from the pavement where it had landed. Still had two cold burgers in it. He put it in the nearest trash can and walked to McQueen.

"Boston," he said. "We've already lost ninety minutes."

The evening light was doing something specific to Boston — that particular Northeast December gold that lasts about twenty minutes and makes everything look like it was painted with serious intentions. McQueen came off the highway and into quieter streets, the city shifting register from transit to neighborhood, and eventually stopped in front of a white villa on a tree-lined road that looked like someone's very successful idea of privacy.

Four stories. Wide porch. The kind of house that says money without saying anything at all about what goes on inside.

"They said academy," Rango said, looking at it through the windshield. "This is someone's house."

"Old money doesn't use signs," Megan said.

"Is that a general principle or are you specifically familiar with this location?"

Megan didn't answer, which was its own answer.

Rango reached for the door.

Then stopped.

An engine — low, European, the sound of something that cost more than most people's apartments — came up the street and slowed beside them. A town car, black, the kind of length that communicates that arriving is an event rather than a transition.

The door opened.

A couple came out first — mid-forties, the kind of well-dressed that's so complete it stops registering as clothing and starts registering as a statement about the world. The woman moved like she had never once in her life been in a room she hadn't already accounted for. The man had the focused stillness of someone who processed everything and showed nothing.

Then their daughter.

Black dress, floor-length. Black eyeshadow. Black lipstick. The overall effect was of someone who had made very deliberate decisions about how they intended to arrive in rooms.

She was maybe ten.

On her shoulder — moving with the fluid, independent confidence of something that had its own schedule — was a hand. Severed at the wrist, pale, the fingers articulating with quiet purpose as it shifted its position.

Rango looked at the hand.

The hand's fingers flexed, slowly, in a way that might have been acknowledgment.

Emma, beside Rango, looked at the girl, looked at the hand, and then looked at Rango with an expression that was the closest to I'm going to like it here that he'd ever seen on her face.

"Huh," Rango said.

The girl looked at Emma. Emma looked back. Neither of them said anything yet, but the silence had the quality of an introduction that had already happened at some level neither of them needed to explain.

Rango looked at the villa. Looked at the town car. Looked at the family with the severed hand on their daughter's shoulder, standing in the Boston evening like this was simply how things were.

He got out of the car.

"Ted," he said, over his shoulder, "you're going to want to see this part."
