Chapter 1 - the sphinx-1

Have you ever heard of a world where the impossible becomes reality?

A world far greater than Earth, stretching endlessly toward the edge of the universe.

This is my story.

My name was Ethan Walker.

I was a 32-year-old man, living a life that felt hollow and forgotten. I had no parents, no friends—no one who truly cared whether I existed or not. Loneliness was my only companion, following me through every day and every night.

I had studied relentlessly.

Universities, books, theories—all kinds of engineering books. I believed knowledge would change my fate.

But reality was cruel. Despite all my education, I was surviving as a part-time delivery worker, barely earning enough to eat.

The world kept advancing—technology evolving, systems improving—yet none of it helped someone like me. All the things I studied had become useless just to earn a single day's food.

That was what I believed.

Until the day I died.

An earthquake struck without warning. The ground shattered, buildings collapsed, and chaos swallowed everything. I remember pain for a brief moment… and then darkness.

When I opened my eyes again,

I wasn't Ethan Walker anymore.

I had been reborn.

I was no longer an adult—I was a five-year-old boy.

Cold air brushed against my skin. Towering trees surrounded me from every direction. I was standing alone in the middle of a dense forest. My body felt unfamiliar, small, weak—but my memories were intact.

I understood immediately.

I had entered a new world.

I didn't know who I was now, or why I was here, but staying still meant death. I decided to move forward and find answers.

As I walked deeper into the forest, a strange sound reached my ears.

Curiosity drew me closer—against my better judgment.

Then I saw it.

A wolf, massive beyond belief—as tall as an elephant—stood before me. Its presence alone crushed the air around it. The beast was calmly devouring a rabbit nearly two feet long, tearing into it as if it were nothing more than a snack.

My heart nearly stopped.

This was no ordinary animal.

This was no ordinary world.

Fear struck instantly. My instincts screamed at me to run. I turned around and fled without hesitation.

For reasons I couldn't explain, my legs carried me toward the south.

I didn't understand why, but my body seemed to remember the path. As I ran, strange knowledge surfaced in my mind. I somehow knew that once a wolf begins eating, it won't hunt another prey immediately.

Trusting that instinct, I kept running.

After what felt like hours, I finally reached a village.

The houses looked old—ancient even. The people wore unfamiliar clothes, and the atmosphere felt completely different from Earth.

As I stepped inside, I noticed something strange.

No one looked surprised to see me.

Instead, their eyes were filled with recognition.

Suddenly, memories flooded my mind—memories that weren't mine, yet were. A beggar boy who once lived in this village. A child who had suffered hunger, rejection, and neglect.

That boy was me.

Now I understood.

This was not Earth.

This was a world where beings like the Sphinx existed, where monstrous creatures roamed freely, and where mana flowed through every living thing. Humans used mana—and so did monsters.

A world of danger.

A world of mystery.

A world where my second life had begun.

And this time—

I would not let it be wasted.
