Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Commander

We peered into the smoke.

The stairs were gone. The explosion had been stronger than I anticipated. The flight of stairs connecting the third and fourth floors was just... missing. There was a jagged hole where the wood had been.

"We're trapped," Silas whispered. "We cut off our own exit."

"We cut off their entrance," I corrected, coughing in the smoke. "We're safe."

"Are we?"

A low, guttural laugh floated up from the lobby.

The Kobold Shaman was still alive. He hadn't been on the stairs. He was standing in the centre of the lobby, surrounded by the charred remains of his army.

He looked up at us through the hole in the ceiling. He raised his staff.

The red skull on top glowed. The shadows in the corners of our penthouse apartment began to lengthen. They detached themselves from the walls.

"Shadow Summons," I cursed. "He doesn't need stairs. He can spawn enemies directly next to us."

Three Shadow Wolves materialised in our living room. Their eyes were empty voids.
