Chapter 33: Yakushi Nonou
Medical ninjutsu was an excellent path, but if Yuu wanted to use it openly, he needed a way to justify where he learned it.
Otherwise, if a Ninja Academy student suddenly displayed refined medical ninjutsu and someone noticed something off, he could be labeled a spy on the spot.
So to make his skill believable, he needed the right source and the right teacher.
"Medical ninjutsu?"
After hearing Yuu's request, the old director suddenly smiled.
"That's perfect."
"Come with me."
He stood and gestured for Yuu to follow.
Yuu trailed behind him into another office. A woman's voice came from inside.
"Please come in."
A moment later, the sliding door opened with a soft sound.
"Miss Nono, sorry for the interruption."
The old director greeted the woman with a smile.
Yuu followed his gaze.
A woman sat upright behind the desk.
She wore a gray robe and looked to be in her twenties, focused on paperwork. Her features were not striking, only delicate, yet there was something about her presence that felt quietly unusual.
"Nono?"
Yuu's heart stirred.
Could it be her?
Yakushi Nono, a member of Konoha's ANBU who had once served in Root, a spy who moved between factions to gather intelligence for the village.
From what Yuu knew, she had also worked at the orphanage before. As director, she had once come into conflict with Danzo and Root.
The tragedy that later involved Yakushi Kabuto also traced back to this.
Of course, that was all in the future.
Right now, Yakushi Nono was simply a ninja who had retired from ANBU and was preparing to take over as the orphanage's director.
"Ms. Nono."
The old director's attitude remained respectful.
"I'm not here on official business. I just have a favor to ask."
"Please, go ahead, Mr. Sawano."
Nono's expression was gentle as she spoke, and she motioned for him not to stand on ceremony.
"You're my senior. If you need something, just say so."
"It's about this child."
Sawano's tone stayed respectful.
"I watched him grow up here. He's currently attending the Ninja Academy…"
He briefly explained Yuu's situation and then described his goal.
"Oh?"
Nono looked at Yuu, surprise flickering across her face.
"You want to become a medical ninja? That's quite rare."
There were plenty of students at the Ninja Academy, and most of them aimed to become powerful combat ninja.
It was not unheard of to pursue medical work, but it was uncommon.
"Compared to an ordinary ninja, the path of a medical ninja is much harder."
She fixed her eyes on Yuu, serious.
"Are you prepared?"
"Yes."
Yuu nodded without hesitation.
"The path might be harder than the one most ninja choose, but being able to devote myself to something I love is also a kind of happiness."
"So I hope you can help me, Sister Nono."
His expression was sincere, carrying the innocent smile unique to children, the kind that naturally softened people's hearts.
Nono looked at him, and a smile appeared as well.
"Alright. Then stay here."
"I just arrived and I'm about to take over as director. If you have time, you can come often."
"My medical ninjutsu may not be at the very top, but guiding a beginner like you will not be a problem."
In truth, Nono was being modest.
Her medical ninjutsu might not be the best in the entire ninja world, but it was far beyond what ordinary people could match. In Konoha alone, she was stronger than the vast majority.

Yuu's face brightened immediately.
From that day on, Yuu visited the orphanage far more often than before.
After classes at the Ninja Academy, whenever he had time, he would come here to find Nono.

Watching that, Nono's eyes filled with admiration.
"It's only because you teach well, Director."
Yuu smiled up at her.
"If it were just me, no matter how hard I worked, I couldn't reach this level so quickly."
As he spoke, he glanced into the distance.
A group of children were shouting and laughing, chasing one another through the yard.
"What are you looking at?"
Nono asked.
"Their lives."
Yuu's voice softened.
"If you really think about it, being able to let go of everything and live as carefree as they do wouldn't be so bad."
"Living in this world, people are always burdened by something."
Nono shook her head.
"How could anyone truly be carefree?"
She looked at Yuu, her tone calm.
"Just like you, Yuu. You smile a lot, but you must be carrying things in your heart too."
Nono was an outstanding spy who had traveled between different factions. After spending enough time together, she could naturally sense what was beneath the surface.
Still, she did not press the matter.
After all, on the surface, Yuu was only a seven year old child. Even if he had worries, how heavy could they be?
"Aren't you the same, Director?"
Yuu smiled.
"If we're talking about burdens, you don't have fewer than I do."
"That's the trouble of being an adult."
Nono did not deny it. She only reached out and patted his head.
"But those are adult troubles."
"They have nothing to do with you, who are still a child."
