Chapter 11: The King Returns

"Ken…"

His father's smiling face seemed to appear before him again.

"Play well. When you join the São Paulo first team, your mother and I will always be in the stands at Morumbi Stadium cheering for you."

"Ken."

Head Coach Ramalho's voice cut through his thoughts.

"It's your turn."

Ken blinked once, pulling himself back to reality. Ramalho placed both hands on his shoulders and looked directly into his eyes.

"Tell me—are you ready?"

Ken took a slow breath. When he looked up again, the hesitation had vanished.

"Yes, sir. I'm ready."

Ramalho nodded with satisfaction and patted his shoulder twice.

"Good. Go enjoy your football."

---

Standing at the touchline, Ken adjusted his jersey and bent slightly, touching the turf with his fingertips.

Dad… Mom… watch me.

The fourth official raised the substitution board.

A ripple spread through the stadium.

"Attention, São Paulo fans," the stadium announcer called, voice rising with excitement. "Take a look at the player about to enter the match…"

Many supporters leaned forward, trying to see clearly from the stands.

"Please welcome back—our academy prodigy—Ken!"

For a brief second there was silence.

Then recognition exploded across Morumbi Stadium.

"Ken…! Ken…! Ken…!"

The chants rolled like thunder through the night air.

Two years had passed, yet many supporters still remembered the young talent who once lit up the academy fields. Now he was back—this time as a first-team player.

Ken felt his throat tighten slightly.

He had endured too many setbacks, too many silent struggles. At this moment, hearing tens of thousands of voices calling his name felt unreal.

The chains that had weighed on him for two years seemed to fall away.

Football—pure football—had returned.

---

"Go for it," said Lúcio, stepping forward and slapping his palm in encouragement.

Ken nodded.

"I will."

The whistle sounded, and the second half resumed.

São Paulo lined up in a 4-2-1-3 formation, and Ken took position in the central attacking role—the classic number ten area, just behind the striker.

High in the stands, Vizzoli watched quietly, arms folded. As Ken's mentor and legal guardian in Brazil, he had followed the boy's growth for years. Seeing him finally step onto the pitch again filled him with quiet relief.

The young man had changed—more silent, more composed—but his eyes were once again fixed only on football.

---

São Paulo quickly launched an attack.

A lofted pass from deep midfield dropped toward Ken. He met the ball while accelerating, leaning into the defender behind him. Using the contact, he nudged the ball slightly left, then spun around the defender's shoulder, collecting it again in stride.

The movement was smooth and efficient, drawing immediate applause.

Approaching the edge of the penalty area, Ken saw Fabiano dragging defenders toward the center, opening space on the flank. A center-back stepped forward to block his path.

Ken slowed for half a second, performing two quick step-overs. The defender shifted his weight, trying to anticipate the direction.

That moment of hesitation was enough.

Ken snapped his ankle and slid the ball cleanly between the defender's legs, sending it diagonally into the left side of the box—precisely into the path of Osvaldo, who was sprinting forward.

Even Osvaldo was momentarily surprised by the no-look pass, but instinct took over. He launched himself into a sliding shot.

The ball skimmed inside the near post before the goalkeeper could react.

1–0.

Morumbi Stadium erupted.

Osvaldo jumped up immediately and grabbed Ken in a tight embrace.

"Great pass! You didn't even warn me—I almost missed it!"

Fabiano ran over laughing.

"If he had missed that, it would've been a crime!"

Teammates gathered one after another—Silvinho, Denílson, Lúcio—while even goalkeeper Rogério Ceni jogged halfway upfield in celebration.

Moments later, the stadium announcer's voice rang out again:

"The goal was scored by—Osvaldo!"

The crowd roared the name.

"And the assist—by São Paulo's returning prodigy—Ken!"

In the stands, Vizzoli closed his eyes briefly, emotion softening his expression.

The boy who had once left in silence—

had finally returned to the stage.
