Chapter 33 - 33 The Mark Reacts

The fortress had been quiet before the change began.

Iruen was walking along the upper corridor that overlooked the lower courtyard when the seal moved again.

The reaction was immediate.

The mark on his chest pulsed sharply, not like pain but like something pressing outward beneath the skin. He stopped walking at once and placed his hand against the mark through the fabric of his shirt.

It burned, but not violently.

But strongly enough that he felt the heat through his ribs.

He stood still until the pulse passed.

The corridor around him remained empty. The black stone walls stretched in both directions, lit only by the low blue flames that burned along the iron brackets. Nothing in the fortress appeared disturbed.

Still, Iruen knew the difference now.

This was not the same reaction he had felt before.

He had lived with the seal long enough to recognize its moods.

When it reacted to emotion, the pulse came fast and uneven. When it reacted to physical strain, the sensation spread across his chest like pressure.

This was neither, because this felt distant.

Like a signal reaching him from somewhere else.

Iruen lowered his hand slowly.

"That again," he said quietly.

The seal pulsed once more beneath his skin, then he inhaled sharply as the heat spread briefly across his ribs, then it faded.

Iruen leaned against the cold stone wall for a moment and waited.

The fortress felt different, not louder. If anything, it had grown quieter.

He straightened again and continued walking down the corridor.

The lower gates of the fortress came into view through the open arch ahead. From this height he could see the outer cliffs of the demon realm stretching into the dark distance. The sky above the abyss held its usual dim glow.

Everything looked exactly as it always did.

But the seal did not react this way without reason.

Iruen reached the arch and stopped there.

His eyes moved across the courtyard below.

Several demon attendants were moving along the lower path, carrying supplies toward the inner halls. Two guards stood near the gate entrance, their posture unchanged.

None of them appeared alarmed.

The pulse came again.

Iruen's fingers tightened against the stone edge of the arch.

The heat was sharper this time.

Not pain.

But recognition.

He exhaled slowly.

"That is not internal."

The words were barely louder than a breath.

Footsteps approached from the corridor behind him.

Iruen did not turn.

He already knew who it would be.

Nyxar stopped a short distance away.

"The mark reacted," the attendant said calmly.

Iruen glanced back at him.

"You felt it too?"

Nyxar nodded once.

"Yes."

Iruen studied him for a moment.

Nyxar rarely looked surprised. His expression now remained as controlled as usual, but his eyes had sharpened slightly.

"That reaction reached the lower halls," Nyxar continued.

Iruen faced the courtyard again.

"That means it reached the fortress."

"Yes."

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then the seal pulsed again.

Nyxar's gaze moved briefly toward Iruen's chest.

"It is stronger than before," he said. "But not unstable."

"No." Iruen replied.

He pressed his hand against the mark again.

The heat had settled now, but something else had replaced it.

Awareness.

Like the bond had briefly stretched outward and then returned.

He lowered his hand again.

"What changed?" he asked.

Nyxar did not answer immediately.

Instead he looked toward the outer gates of the fortress.

"The realm adjusted."

That sentence carried more meaning than it appeared.

Iruen followed his gaze.

"The gates?"

Nyxar nodded slightly.

"They opened."

Iruen frowned.

"The gates open every day."

"Not like this."

The difference mattered.

Iruen understood that much.

"The Demon Lord left," Nyxar said.

Iruen blinked once.

The sentence settled heavily in the corridor.

"Left," he repeated.

"Yes."

The fortress had grown quiet for a reason.

Iruen looked back toward the outer cliffs.

"So that pulse came from him."

"From the bond." Nyxar said immediately

"Because he left the realm."

Nyxar inclined his head slightly.

"That is the most likely explanation."

Iruen considered that.

The seal reacted again, but this time the pulse felt different, It felt steadier. He exhaled slowly.

"That is strange."

Nyxar watched him.

"You expected instability?"

"Yes." Iruen answered.

"Instead the bond tightened."

Iruen nodded. "That is what it feels like."

Nyxar remained silent for a moment.

Then he said quietly, "The realm itself reacted when he crossed."

Iruen looked at him again.

"You mean the realm felt it."

"Yes."

"And the seal answered."

The idea hung between them.

Neither of them rushed to explain it.

From the courtyard below, one of the gate guards glanced upward briefly. The guard had clearly felt the earlier pulse as well.

The fortress was aware.

Even if it did not yet understand why.

Iruen rested his arms against the stone arch.

"So he really left the realm?" he asked just to confirmed.

"Yes." Nyxar answered.

"And the bond did not weaken." Iruen asked.

"No."

He frowned slightly.

"If anything, it feels stronger."

Nyxar's eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

"That is unusual."

"Everything about this arrangement is unusual."

Nyxar did not disagree.

Another faint pulse moved through the seal.

This one was softer.

Iruen barely reacted to it.

But he noticed the direction.

Not outward.

Returning.

"He is coming back," Iruen said.

Nyxar looked at him.

"You felt it ?"

"Yes."

The bond had changed again.

The earlier reaction had stretched outward.

Now it drew inward again.

Like something closing distance.

Nyxar turned toward the corridor leading deeper into the fortress.

"Then the disturbance has ended."

"Maybe."

Iruen pushed away from the arch and began walking back through the corridor.

Nyxar followed beside him.

Neither of them hurried.

The seal pulsed once more.

This time the heat faded quickly.

Stable.

Iruen stopped once more before reaching the next corridor turn.

"What caused it?" he asked.

Nyxar answered honestly.

"We do not know."

Iruen looked back toward the open arch behind them.

But he had a feeling.

Something had touched the bond from the outside.

Something beyond the demon realm.

The seal had not broken.

It had responded.

Iruen pressed his hand once more against the mark on his chest.

The heat had faded now.

But the memory of the reaction remained.

"This is changing," he said quietly.

Nyxar studied him.

"Yes."

Iruen lowered his hand.

The corridor lights flickered softly along the walls.

The fortress had returned to its usual silence.

But something within the bond had shifted.

And neither of them fully understood what that meant yet.

The seal had not weakened.

It had answered.

And somewhere beyond the realm, the cause of that answer was already returning.
