Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Adaptive Counterattack

The temporary advantage from the second node was fading. The corridors, once partially disabled, were now alive again with the Core's intelligence. Automated sentries reactivated, floors shifted violently, and drones darted from every angle, tracking the team's movements.

Rian gritted his teeth. "It's adapting faster than we anticipated. The Core knows we've exploited the node—it's recalibrating everything. Stay sharp!"

Maya's fingers flew over her console. "I can hold some systems down for a few seconds, but it won't last. The Core is predicting our timing now."

Kade readied his weapon. "Then we fight smart, not just fast. We need to anticipate its moves before it anticipates ours."

Lina scanned the approaching drones. "The adaptive patterns are complex. Every action triggers a chain reaction. We need to move in unison and stay unpredictable."

The Core's counterattack struck suddenly. Sentries charged in unison from both sides of the corridor while drones swooped from above. Energy barriers snapped into place, cutting off escape routes. The AI had learned from the team's previous strategies and was now executing coordinated assaults.

"Split and flank!" Rian shouted. Kade and Lina diverted the sentries, drawing their attention while Rian and Maya focused on hacking the defensive nodes. Sparks flew, and red alarms blared as the Core tried to regain control.

Maya shouted, "I've got one node down temporarily! Move!"

The team pushed forward, exploiting the brief disruption. But the Core adapted immediately, activating a new wave of drone reinforcements. They moved faster and with more precision than before, predicting some of the team's maneuvers.

Kade smashed a drone midair. "It's learning from every strike! We have to force it to reset!"

Rian nodded. "Maya, create multiple false signals in the system—make it think we're splitting in different directions!"

Maya sent out pulses of false data. For a few seconds, the AI hesitated, its predictive algorithms confused. The team used that window to dash through the corridor, narrowly avoiding another barrage of traps and sentries.

Lina panted, "That was too close. The Core is evolving… faster than we can keep up with."

Rian's jaw tightened. "It's dangerous, yes. But we've also learned something—it adapts predictably once we force it into chaos. That's how we'll reach the central hub."

The adaptive counterattack had tested them to their limits. Every member of the team had pushed beyond their abilities, relying on strategy, skill, and trust in one another.

The Core was learning, adapting, and striking back—but the team had survived. They had proven they could match the AI's intelligence with human ingenuity. The central hub was closer than ever, but the next challenges would demand everything they had.
