Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: gift

"That's it. When I saw that creature, I wasn't even afraid of Filch. I quickly opened the door and ran out with everyone. Only after the door closed did I dare to catch my breath," Harry said, panting. Staying calm while opening the door had been no easy feat.

"Then we just ran and ran. We got rid of Filch, we got rid of the monster, and then we went back and tucked ourselves in," Ron said, a hint of happiness in his voice.

"Cheers!" Harry, Ron, and Hermione were delighted to hear their friends' praise. There was nothing better than sharing your experiences with your closest friends and hearing them admire you.

"But I won't forget Malfoy. He looked so surprised when he saw us this morning. He must have set the trap from the start, planning to report us," Harry said, remembering how Malfoy had broken his promise yesterday and secretly informed Filch.

"Luckily, we're not easy to deal with," Ron said proudly.

"Malfoy isn't easy to deal with. We were nearly caught yesterday," Hermione added, still a little upset about the previous day's events.

"By the way, Hermione, how did you suddenly show up yesterday?" Harry asked, surprised by her sudden appearance, with Ron leaning forward, equally curious.

"That's the power of magic," Hermione said, glancing at George. Seeing that he wasn't going to say anything, she fell silent.

"Oh," Harry and Ron both took a deep breath, impressed by the charm. "I really want to know, and I'm not embarrassed to ask."

"I also noticed last night that the three-headed dog was standing on a trapdoor. It was clearly guarding something," George added. Hermione didn't intend to continue discussing the Disillusionment Charm, so she said, "There were other discoveries too."

"What was it watching?" Harry touched his head, feeling a shiver run through him.

"I need such a massive creature to guard something that's either extremely dangerous or incredibly valuable," Ron said.

"I might know a bit about it," Harry said. Then he realized the attacks on the three-headed dog, Hagrid, and Gringotts were all connected. Clues suddenly aligned, and Harry realized he had stumbled upon something highly secretive.

"When Hagrid picked me up, he took me to Gringotts," Harry said, looking around. They were sitting near a long table in a corner, eating breakfast, with other students a table away. He lowered his voice.

"Hagrid took a small package from Gringotts, hid it on himself, and brought it back to Watts," Harry continued. "Later, Gringotts was attacked, but they claimed nothing was stolen because what they were looking for was precisely what Hagrid had brought back."

Hearing this, everyone exchanged glances.

"The thing Hagrid brought back from Gringotts was hidden behind the door guarded by the three-headed dog," Hermione guessed.

"But right now, what I want most is to give Malfoy a proper lesson," Ron said, not caring much about what the three-headed dog was guarding. Yesterday, he had planned to teach Malfoy a lesson with Harry, but Malfoy had cleverly led them on a wild goose chase. Thank goodness for that.

"Yesterday's events aren't going to be solved easily," Harry said. He wasn't ready to give up, but he couldn't think of a solution just yet.

"Then you need to be even more careful," George said, confident that Harry had the upper hand over Malfoy.

At that moment, an owl swooped into the hall, circled in front of them, dropped a long package, then spread its wings and flew off.

"Open it," George gestured.

Harry opened the package and found a sleek black box with Ron's name on it. He handed it to Ron.

Ron was surprised and a little confused. He had no idea who could have sent him a gift. Judging by the box, it seemed valuable.

"Ron, this is your gift. Open it," Harry said cheerfully.

"But no one sent me a gift," Ron said, flustered. "Maybe it's a mistake."

Seeing Ron's panicked expression, everyone felt a pang of sympathy. He might never receive a gift otherwise.

"Of course it's not a mistake. This is from us," Harry said.

"You!" Ron was momentarily speechless but quietly opened the box.

Inside was a beautiful wand, fourteen inches long, made of willow, with a unicorn hair core.

"It's beautiful!" Ron said, gently stroking the wand, handling it as delicately as if afraid to startle it.

"This is the best gift I've ever received," Ron said, his voice choking slightly.

Seeing this, Harry nearly teared up. He placed a hand on Ron's shoulder, remembering the first time he had received a gift.

"Tell me exactly what happened," Ron said awkwardly, clutching the wand tightly.

"We noticed your wand was falling apart, so we pooled money to get you a new one. We planned to get one just like your old wand. I wrote to Ollivanders. Because we knew you'd tested it before, we went ahead and bought it," Hermione explained calmly.

"Oh, I remember now! I tested this wand at Ollivanders, and it still looks perfect," Ron said, still a little flustered.

Hermione was touched. In fact, neither she nor Harry had noticed Ron's predicament.

Although they were now close friends with Ron, they hadn't thought to give him a gift. It was George who privately told them to arrange everything, only symbolically accepting the silver coins they offered, insisting it was a joint gift from all three.

Hermione and Harry had considered telling the truth, but George quickly convinced them that if he alone revealed it, Ron might feel embarrassed to accept it.

George watched the scene with sympathy, quite different from his usual joking demeanor. He understood the hardships of poverty and embarrassment. He wasn't the original author of the story, and most of its details were long forgotten.

But seeing Ron using his brother's old robes and wand, George knew it could hurt an eleven-year-old boy. This wasn't a child lacking responsibility, complaining, "I have no personality, I don't understand anything, I must obey my parents."
