Chapter 48 - Blood in the Shadows

Night settled over the Bloodheart valley slowly.

Unlike the forests of Libertas, where darkness arrived with the chorus of insects and rustling leaves, the vampire domain embraced night like an old ally returning home. Crimson lanterns ignited one by one across the towering walls of the Bloodheart castle, casting long shadows along the stone courtyards and towering battlements.

Guards patrolled the high walkways with disciplined silence.

Armored figures moved like living statues beneath the moonlight, their crimson cloaks swaying gently in the cool mountain wind.

The castle had not relaxed after the assassination attempt.

If anything, the tension had deepened.

Word of the Void Clan assassin had spread quickly through the noble districts of the valley. Vampires did not panic easily, but centuries of survival had sharpened their instincts.

When assassins began appearing in a lord's throne hall…

War was already close.

Inside the western tower of the castle, Kael stood alone beside a tall open window.

The valley stretched far below him, the city of Bloodheart spreading outward like a field of dark jewels beneath the moon. Thousands of lanterns burned across the streets, their crimson glow reflecting off rooftops and narrow stone roads.

It was beautiful.

But Kael wasn't looking at the city.

His eyes remained fixed on the distant eastern mountains.

The direction of the Crimson Cull.

A quiet pulse moved through his chest again.

Not pain.

Not weakness.

Something different.

The Tier-Five subsystem stirred beneath his system interface like a second heartbeat waiting to be understood.

Kael closed his eyes slowly.

The system responded immediately.

---

[System Active]

[Subsystem: Crimson Authority]

[Trait Active: Blood Sense]

[Range Expanding...]

---

At first there was nothing.

Only darkness.

Then the world began to shift.

Kael felt the forest first.

Faint threads stretching across his mind as the Vermin Network reconnected fully to his awareness. Rats moved through tunnels beneath the soil. Insects crawled through bark and stone. Small birds slept in hidden branches along the valley's outer forests.

Each creature was a tiny signal.

A whisper.

A movement.

Thousands of them forming a living map.

But beneath those whispers…

Another presence flickered.

Different.

Stronger.

Red.

Kael's brow tightened slightly.

There.

A pulse.

Far away.

Like a distant ember glowing beneath ash.

His eyes snapped open.

---

The door behind him opened quietly.

Izazel stepped inside the chamber without knocking.

"You felt it too."

Kael did not turn.

"You already knew."

Izazel leaned casually against the stone doorway.

"My father noticed the system ripple."

Kael frowned slightly.

"So it wasn't just me."

Izazel shook his head.

"No."

He stepped closer to the window.

"The entire castle felt it."

Kael glanced at him.

"The vampires felt my system?"

Izazel smiled faintly.

"Not your system."

His eyes shifted toward Kael's chest.

"That."

The crimson subsystem stirred again.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"I can feel them."

Izazel's expression grew more serious.

"The marked ones."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Silence filled the room for several seconds.

Then Izazel asked the obvious question.

"How many?"

Kael closed his eyes again.

The crimson pulse flickered in his awareness.

Three signals.

No…

Four.

Kael's eyes opened.

"Four."

Izazel's smile vanished.

"Inside the valley?"

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Izazel's voice dropped.

"That means the Cull is already here."

---

The council chamber filled quickly once the message reached Lord Dormon.

The ancient vampire lord stood beside the central war map as nobles and commanders gathered once more around the circular obsidian table.

The tension inside the chamber was heavier than it had been earlier.

Because this time…

The enemy was not far away.

They were already inside Bloodheart territory.

Dormon's voice echoed across the room.

"Confirm the report."

Kael stepped forward calmly.

"Four marked signatures."

One of the elders leaned forward.

"You are certain?"

Kael met his gaze.

"Yes."

Dormon asked the next question.

"Distance?"

Kael closed his eyes briefly.

The crimson threads flickered again.

"Two inside the city."

The room erupted into murmurs.

"And the others?"

Kael continued.

"One outside the western gate."

"And the last?"

Kael hesitated.

His voice dropped slightly.

"Inside the castle."

---

The chamber went completely silent.

Every noble in the room stiffened.

Dormon's expression did not change.

But the temperature of the room seemed to drop several degrees.

"Inside my castle."

Kael nodded slowly.

"Yes."

One of the vampire generals immediately stepped forward.

"We should search every chamber."

Dormon raised one hand.

"No."

The command stopped the room instantly.

Izazel frowned.

"You're letting them stay?"

Dormon's eyes gleamed faintly.

"We will not chase shadows."

He looked toward Kael.

"You said you can feel them."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Dormon smiled slightly.

"Then we hunt them properly."

---

The trap was set quickly.

Bloodheart soldiers quietly repositioned across the castle corridors.

Servants continued their duties as if nothing had changed.

Nobles returned to their quarters.

To anyone watching…

The castle appeared calm.

But beneath that calm surface, a silent hunt had begun.

Kael walked slowly through the lower corridors of the western tower.

Ashfang moved beside him, silent as a ghost.

Nyx followed close behind.

The girl refused to remain in her chamber once she understood what was happening.

Izazel walked ahead of them, his crimson cloak trailing behind him like flowing shadow.

"Where?"

Kael closed his eyes briefly.

The crimson thread flickered again.

"Below us."

Izazel frowned.

"The servant levels."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

Ashfang growled softly.

"Hunter smell."

---

Far below them…

Inside the lower storage chambers of the castle…

A man moved carefully between stacked crates of wine and grain.

His clothing marked him as a castle servant.

But his movements betrayed the lie.

Too controlled.

Too precise.

His fingers brushed lightly against the small mark carved into his wrist.

The Crimson Cull sigil pulsed faintly.

The controllers had given him only one command.

Observe.

Wait.

Report.

The servant paused suddenly.

His head tilted slightly.

Something felt wrong.

He turned slowly.

And saw them standing at the entrance of the chamber.

Kael.

Izazel.

Ashfang.

Nyx.

The servant's eyes widened slightly.

Then the crimson sigil on his wrist ignited.

---

The man lunged forward instantly.

Not toward the door.

Toward Kael.

Ashfang moved faster.

The wolf's jaws snapped around the assassin's arm before the blade could reach its target.

Bone cracked.

The assassin screamed.

Izazel stepped forward calmly.

"Void Clan again."

The man's eyes burned with red light.

Marked.

Controlled.

His free hand reached for the small capsule hidden between his teeth.

Izazel moved instantly.

His hand closed around the assassin's jaw.

Too late.

The man bit down.

Foam spilled from his mouth as the poison spread.

His body collapsed seconds later.

Dead.

Kael frowned.

"Cyanide."

Izazel nodded.

"They never allow themselves to be captured."

---

The chamber fell silent.

Dormon's soldiers entered moments later.

But the assassin was already gone.

Kael stood quietly beside the body.

His crimson sense flickered again.

Three signals remained.

Two in the city.

One inside the castle.

But this one…

This one felt different.

Stronger.

Izazel noticed his expression.

"What is it?"

Kael's voice dropped slightly.

"The last one."

Izazel frowned.

"What about him?"

Kael looked toward the distant towers of the castle.

"…He's moving."

---

High above the castle walls…

A figure crouched along the highest battlement.

The wind whipped across his dark cloak as he watched the activity below.

The crimson sigil carved into his chest pulsed faintly beneath his armor.

Tier Three.

Controller.

His eyes glowed faintly red as he observed the castle through a small crystal lens.

Then he smiled.

"They found the scouts."

A whisper carried across the wind.

Good.

That meant the next phase could begin.

The controller crushed the crystal lens in his hand.

And stepped off the battlement.

Falling into the darkness below.

---

Inside the castle…

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

The crimson thread vanished.

Gone.

He exhaled slowly.

Izazel looked at him.

"What happened?"

Kael answered quietly.

"He left."

Izazel frowned.

"Where?"

Kael's gaze shifted toward the eastern mountains.

"…To report."

Silence fell between them.

Because everyone in that chamber understood what that meant.

The Crimson Cull now knew exactly where Kael was.

And the hunt…

Had officially begun.
