"It's been an exhilarating two days."

Aedryn stretched languidly across the cushioned seat like a cat that had eaten far too well, arms raised above his head as his back arched with deliberate laziness. His jaw cracked with a long yawn that showed absolutely no regard for the company he was in.

The late afternoon sun streamed through the high windows of the war chamber, turning the polished obsidian table between them into a dark mirror. Papers lay scattered across its surface—reports, witness testimonies, interrogation summaries—all remnants of the chaos that had unfolded over the past forty-eight hours.

Two assassins uncovered.

A murder inside the palace.

A prophecy surfacing in the borderlands.

Yes. The last two days had indeed been exhilarating.

Aedryn looked as though he had just woken from a pleasant nap.
