Chapter 20 - The Realm Above Heaven

The first sensation Lin Xuan felt upon arriving in the Upper Realm was weight.

Not physical weight.

Existential.

The air itself carried density far beyond the lower world. Every breath was filled with rich, condensed spiritual essence—so thick it almost felt liquid. For ordinary cultivators, this environment alone would be overwhelming.

For Lin Xuan—

It was intoxicating.

The Devourer Star inside his dantian trembled with excitement as it absorbed the surrounding qi effortlessly.

"Careful," Bai Lianhua said softly beside him.

Lin Xuan glanced at her.

She stood only a few steps away in the ascension beam, white robes shimmering faintly. Though composed, he could see the tension in her shoulders.

"This realm is watching us," she continued.

He could feel it too.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Perhaps thousands of distant consciousnesses brushed across the sky like invisible threads.

Curious.

Cautious.

Hostile.

The moment someone ascended, they became a spectacle.

Especially someone like him.

The beam faded slowly, leaving them standing on a massive circular platform floating in the sky. Ancient runes were carved into its surface, each glowing with faint golden light.

This was the Ascension Terrace.

Behind them, the portal closed with a quiet hum.

The path back to the lower realm was gone.

"New ascenders," a voice said.

Lin Xuan turned.

A group of cultivators approached from a nearby jade bridge connecting the platform to a floating island.

Their robes were embroidered with silver clouds and celestial cranes. Each carried an aura far stronger than ordinary Nascent Soul cultivators.

The leader stepped forward.

Tall.

Sharp-featured.

Eyes cold but curious.

"Welcome to the Heavenly Boundary Realm," he said calmly.

Lin Xuan studied him.

"What stage are you?"

The man's eyebrows lifted slightly.

"Spirit Sovereign."

Ah.

Two entire realms above Nascent Soul.

Bai Lianhua stiffened slightly beside him.

The man continued, "You have ascended from the Lower Azure World. I am Supervisor Wei Jian of the Ascension Registry."

Registry.

Of course.

Even heaven had bureaucracy.

"We record every ascender," Wei Jian said, producing a floating jade tablet. "Name."

Lin Xuan didn't answer immediately.

Wei Jian waited patiently.

"Lin Xuan," he said finally.

The jade tablet flashed.

Wei Jian frowned.

"That name… has already triggered alerts."

Naturally.

The Heavenly Warden's mark burned faintly on Lin Xuan's chest.

Wei Jian's gaze dropped to the silver Brand.

Then widened.

"Impossible."

The surrounding cultivators tensed immediately.

"That's a Warden Seal," one whispered.

Wei Jian's expression hardened.

"Explain."

Lin Xuan shrugged lightly.

"I ate something I shouldn't have."

Silence.

Then—

One of the attendants choked.

Wei Jian stared at him as if deciding whether he was joking.

"You devoured a Warden fragment?"

"Yes."

Bai Lianhua rubbed her temples.

Wei Jian slowly lowered the jade tablet.

"...That explains the alert."

He studied Lin Xuan again, far more carefully now.

"You are aware the Celestial Tribunal is monitoring you."

"I assumed."

"And the Wardens."

"I hope so."

Wei Jian's lips twitched faintly.

"You are either very brave… or very suicidal."

"Neither."

Lin Xuan looked up at the sky where floating continents drifted through layers of clouds.

"I'm hungry."

Wei Jian eventually gestured toward the jade bridge.

"Follow me."

They stepped off the Ascension Terrace and onto the floating island beyond.

The moment Lin Xuan set foot there, his senses expanded automatically.

Everything here was… different.

The ground beneath them was not ordinary stone but spirit jade, condensed natural energy hardened over millennia.

Rivers of glowing qi flowed through the landscape like luminous veins.

Massive spirit trees towered over crystalline lakes.

Even the wind carried fragments of law.

Bai Lianhua whispered softly, "This realm… it's alive."

Wei Jian nodded.

"The Heavenly Boundary Realm is the lowest of the Upper Realms, but even here the concentration of spiritual essence is a hundred times that of your previous world."

Lin Xuan inhaled deeply.

The Devourer Star absorbed the energy instinctively.

He didn't even need to cultivate.

Simply existing here strengthened him.

Wei Jian continued speaking.

"Most ascenders spend their first decades stabilizing their cultivation."

Lin Xuan tilted his head.

"Decades?"

Wei Jian gave him a strange look.

"Yes."

Lin Xuan said nothing.

The Devourer Star pulsed.

It had already begun compressing again.

The island connected to a much larger floating landmass.

At its center stood a vast city suspended in the sky.

Golden towers.

Floating pavilions.

Bridges of light linking hundreds of smaller islands.

Cultivators flew through the air in streaks of color.

Lin Xuan paused.

Even after everything he had seen—

The scale was breathtaking.

"What is this place?" Bai Lianhua asked.

Wei Jian answered simply.

"Celestial Gate City."

The largest ascender hub in the Heavenly Boundary Realm.

Millions of cultivators lived here.

New arrivals registered, found sects, joined factions, or vanished into the endless heavens beyond.

Lin Xuan watched as a group of armored cultivators flew overhead riding spirit beasts the size of houses.

The Devourer Star stirred.

So much energy.

So many potential meals.

Bai Lianhua glanced at him sideways.

"Don't."

"I didn't say anything."

"You didn't need to."

Wei Jian cleared his throat.

"Before anything else, you must pass the Ascension Trial."

Lin Xuan raised an eyebrow.

"I thought we already ascended."

"You did," Wei Jian replied. "But the trial determines your rank in the Heavenly Boundary Realm."

He gestured toward a colossal tower rising from the center of the city.

It pierced the clouds, vanishing into the sky.

"The Heaven Measuring Tower."

Lin Xuan smiled faintly.

"That sounds fun."

Word traveled quickly in Celestial Gate City.

Within hours of Lin Xuan's arrival, whispers spread through countless sect halls and cultivation chambers.

"A Devourer ascended."

"He carries a Warden Brand."

"He devoured a fragment of heaven."

Some laughed at the absurdity.

Others investigated.

One such listener sat in a dark pavilion overlooking the city.

A young woman dressed in crimson robes.

Her eyes glowed faintly like burning coals.

"Interesting," she murmured.

Beside her stood an elderly servant.

"My lady, shall we investigate?"

She watched the distant Heaven Measuring Tower thoughtfully.

"Yes."

Her lips curved into a dangerous smile.

"Anyone who can anger the Wardens is worth meeting."

The entrance hall of the Heaven Measuring Tower buzzed with activity.

Dozens of cultivators lined up before glowing gates that led into the trial chambers.

Each participant would enter alone.

Wei Jian handed Lin Xuan a jade token.

"This will record your results."

Lin Xuan glanced at the enormous tower.

"What exactly does the trial measure?"

Wei Jian smiled faintly.

"Everything."

Strength.

Will.

Law affinity.

Potential.

And most importantly—

He leaned closer slightly.

"How dangerous you are."

Bai Lianhua crossed her arms.

"That seems like a poor system."

Wei Jian shrugged.

"Heaven likes interesting variables."

Lin Xuan stepped forward toward the gate.

The Devourer Star hummed with anticipation.

Tests meant obstacles.

Obstacles meant resistance.

Resistance meant energy.

He stepped through the gate.

Trial One: Pressure

Darkness swallowed him.

Then—

Gravity multiplied.

The pressure was immediate and immense, crushing down on his shoulders like a collapsing mountain.

Lin Xuan didn't move.

He simply stood there.

The Devourer Star pulsed.

Gravity?

That was just another force.

Another law.

The pressure increased.

Ten times.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Most cultivators would collapse long before this point.

Lin Xuan stretched his neck casually.

Then—

He released his aura.

Not explosively.

Just enough.

The gravitational field around him bent.

Distorted.

Collapsed inward.

The pressure vanished completely.

The chamber trembled.

Outside, the tower's measurement crystal flared violently.

Observers stared in shock.

"Gravity nullified?"

"Impossible."

Inside the chamber, Lin Xuan frowned slightly.

"That's it?"

The chamber collapsed.

Trial one: passed.

Trial Two: Illusion

The world shifted instantly.

Lin Xuan stood once again in the ruins of the lower realm.

The Azure Sect lay destroyed.

Bodies everywhere.

Bai Lianhua lying lifeless in the rubble.

Sect Master Zhao kneeling before a Heavenly Warden.

"You brought ruin," the Warden said coldly.

"This is the future you create."

Lin Xuan stared at the scene silently.

For a moment—

He felt anger.

Not at the vision.

At the manipulation.

The Devourer Star pulsed once.

The illusion shattered like glass.

"Next," Lin Xuan said.

Trial Three: Devouring

The final chamber was empty.

Completely.

No enemies.

No obstacles.

Just silence.

Lin Xuan frowned slightly.

Then a voice echoed through the room.

"Show us the nature of your power."

The air condensed.

A sphere of pure law appeared before him.

Dense.

Ancient.

Tempting.

Lin Xuan's eyes lit up.

He reached out slowly.

Then stopped.

The Devourer Star inside him trembled violently.

This wasn't a test of strength.

It was a test of control.

If he devoured the law recklessly—

He might destroy the entire chamber.

Maybe the tower.

Maybe half the city.

He smiled.

Then gently—

Very gently—

He consumed it.

Not swallowing it whole.

Not crushing it.

He peeled it apart.

Thread by thread.

Digesting it with perfect precision.

The law dissolved completely.

The chamber trembled.

Then—

Exploded with light.

Outside the Tower,

The measurement crystal shattered.

Observers leapt to their feet.

Wei Jian stared in disbelief.

"That reading… it's beyond the scale."

Bai Lianhua frowned.

"Is that bad?"

Wei Jian exhaled slowly.

"No."

He looked up at the tower's summit.

"It means heaven just classified him as a Calamity-Level Ascender."

At that exact moment—

Lin Xuan stepped out of the gate.

Completely unharmed.

Completely calm.

He glanced around.

"So?"

Wei Jian stared at him.

"You broke the tower."

Lin Xuan blinked.

"…Oops."

High above Celestial Gate City, in a palace made of drifting starlight—

A celestial figure opened one eye.

"The Devourer has arrived."

And far beyond even that—

The true Heavenly Warden felt the disturbance.

Its gaze turned toward the Heavenly Boundary Realm.

Toward the boy who had devoured its fragment.

Toward the anomaly heaven itself could not predict.

Lin Xuan looked up at the sky.

The Devourer Star pulsed.

This realm was bigger.

Stronger.

Full of prey.

He smiled.

"Now the real story begins."
