Chapter 41 - Chapter 39: Cana Alberona

"Hahaha, just a joke, don't be so nervous!"

Seeing the fleeting astonishment on Erza's face, Makarov laughed heartily like an old kid who had succeeded in a prank, patting his belly.

He said no more and nimbly jumped down from the counter. His small figure instantly blended into the crowd, leaving behind a sentence drifting over: "Look around casually; this will be your home from now on!"

"Cheers for the newcomers!"

"OH——!"

The liveliness went up another level; there was one more reason to celebrate, although the protagonists seemed to have been forgotten in the corner.

Shane looked down at the simple-lined fairy emblem on the back of his hand.

After traveling for so long, finally... there was a definite place to stay, no need to wander aimlessly anymore. An indescribable sense of stability rose from the bottom of his heart, making his tense shoulders relax unconsciously.

However, he hadn't forgotten his primary purpose in coming to the guild.

He walked quickly toward Makarov, who was hooking his arm around Wakaba's neck and chugging alcohol, and raised his voice to ask, "Master! The library in the guild, can we go in and have a look now?"

"No need to ask me about such trivial matters!" Makarov waved his hand without looking back, and immediately devoted himself to the drinking contest again.

Trivial matter?

Shane unconsciously pinched his earlobe, a bit surprised in his heart.

In his mind, a place storing knowledge and history should be sacred and solemn, especially since the library here likely recorded magic. How could it be considered a trivial matter?

He was prepared to be tested by various requirements, but didn't expect the Master to be so casual.

Well, it matches the style when joining just now. Perhaps this is the Fairy Tail way. Shane thought to himself.

"Um... if you don't mind, I can take you there." At this moment, a slightly soft voice came from the side.

Shane turned his head and saw a black-haired girl in a neat plaid skirt standing not far away. Her hands were folded somewhat reservedly in front of her, her gaze docile, looking about the same age as them.

"Thank you." Before Shane could speak, Erza beside him had already thanked her first. Although her tone still carried her inherent seriousness, her speed was a bit faster than usual.

Shane glanced at the girl somewhat unexpectedly, thinking that Erza still had some expectations for female companions of the same age. Wanting to make friends was a good thing.

"My name is Cana Alberona." The black-haired girl introduced herself, leading the way in front, occasionally looking back quietly, her gaze seemingly drifting toward Erza's conspicuous long scarlet hair.

Shane noticed this gaze but stayed silent.

Walking to the library door, Erza finally couldn't hold back. She sighed helplessly and looked at Cana: "Excuse me... is something the matter? You seem to have been looking at me."

Cana seemed startled, a trace of panic flashing across her face, then she whispered, "Are... are you really Gildarts' daughter?"

"Of course not!" Erza answered decisively.

"Indeed, she doesn't look like him." Shane also nodded, analyzing objectively: "Setting aside the huge difference in personality, just from appearance, their eyebrows and eyes are completely different. Moreover, Gildarts' red hair leans more toward a fiery orange-red, while Erza's hair color is a pure and beautiful scarlet, like the sunset glow."

He described it seriously, but Erza's heart skipped a beat listening to it. She subconsciously touched the tips of her hair.

She didn't expect Shane, who usually seemed indifferent to everything, to understand her so well. An indescribable pleasure spread, making her unconsciously relax her tightly pursued lips.

"Oh... so, so it's like that." The black-haired girl obviously breathed a sigh of relief, patting her chest.

But Shane's next sentence instantly made her expression tense again.

"By the way, why do you care so much if Erza is Gildarts' daughter?" Shane looked at her and asked curiously.

"Just, just curious!" Cana's eyes wandered, and her voice lowered. "Because red-haired people are rare in the guild..."

"That was obviously just a joke from the Master." Shane continued to press; he felt Cana's reaction was a bit overly concerned.

Even Erza noticed that this questioning made the atmosphere a bit subtle. She gently pulled Shane's sleeve, then turned to Cana, changing the subject stiffly but diligently.

"By the way, Cana, could you trouble yourself to introduce the library to us? We just arrived and aren't very familiar with it."

The girl named Cana obviously breathed a sigh of relief, gave Erza a grateful look, and quickly turned to push open the library door: "Okay, okay! Follow me in."

Shane was slightly dissatisfied with Erza interrupting him. He wanted to use this opportunity to learn more about the guild's situation so he could integrate into this new environment as soon as possible.

"Erza really has no EQ," he couldn't help but look back and glare at her. "Having been with me for so long, you haven't learned anything."

If it were usual, the girl would definitely glare back with even fiercer eyes. But for some reason, Erza was in a great mood right now. She just curled her lips slightly, glanced at him lightly, and ignored him.

"Tsk..." This gave Shane a suffocating feeling of punching cotton.

Erza is getting harder and harder to deal with!

But before he could express it, his attention was attracted by the scene inside the library.

Completely different from the noisy environment of the guild hall, it was unusually quiet here.

Tall bookshelves almost reached the ceiling, densely packed with books of various materials and thicknesses.

The air was filled with the unique smell of old paper and leather binding. Sunlight slanted in from the high windows, floating slowly in the slightly dusty beams.

Cana lowered her voice and introduced familiarly: "This area near the entrance is mainly some local chronicles, historical records, and biographies of figures on the Ishgar continent.

"Further inside is the magic theory area, including basic Magic Power application, various magic encyclopedias, and so on."

Her introduction was well-organized, obviously very familiar with this place.

Shane listened while his gaze swept over the spines containing knowledge, his eyes full of impatience: "Cana, is there any specific magic suitable for us to learn at our current stage here?"

Hearing this, a look of surprise appeared on Cana's face.

Just now in the hall, when Gildarts was drinking and bragging, he mentioned quite a bit that these two newcomers helped in the S-class mission he just completed, and their strength was not inferior to the veterans in the guild.

Why did they still want to learn new magic?

She thought for a moment, organized her language, and explained seriously: "Actually, it's not better to learn as much magic as possible. Many powerful Mages only specialize in one magic system their entire lives."

"The key is to find the magic most compatible with oneself, and then constantly delve into, develop, and deepen understanding on this basis. The ocean of magic is too deep; one must have no distractions to go further."

After speaking, as if remembering something, she added: "The Master told me this."
