Chapter 7 - Lost Diary Pt.2

May 10th, 2007

On a rainy day, the siblings were in their shared room — gazing out at the rainy skies.

Toys and books are scattered all over their room, it's a total mess.

A sudden growl came from Sylvie's stomach as she clutched at it. She tried to hide her flushed face from her brother who was looking at her.

"Sis, are you hungry?" He asked innocently, leaning closer to Sylvie.

Sylvie looked away, still clutching at her stomach and the hem of her dress.

She nodded shyly in response, unable to meet his gaze.

Felix tapped his chin, thinking.

"Hm.. how about we go to the kitchen?" He suggested.

Sylvie turned to face her brother.

"B-but.. Aunt Iris said we should not go to the kitchen.." she rationalized.

"Who cares? We are not children anymore!" He exclaimed boldly, taking her by the wrist.

Sylvie hesitated for a moment, debating whether to stay here and obey or go with her brother.

"Come on!" Felix said, already dragging her out of the room.

In the end, she let loose of her thoughts as Felix guided her out of the room subconsciously.

They sneaked up to the staff lounge during working hours — knowing no one would be there to catch them or tell them off.

"Hmm.. let's see," he opened the fridge.

On the other hand, Sylvie looked around the kitchen, searching for anything edible.

Suddenly, her eyes landed on a freshly sliced apple.

Her eyes gleamed with hunger as she saw the mouth-watering fruit.

She tried to jump and reach for a slice, however, her height prevented her from reaching it.

Yet she didn't give up that easily, she spotted a chair nearby and an idea struck her immediately.

Sylvie dragged the chair across the room and slowly climbed on top of it — surprisingly, she managed to reach the cutting board of the apples.

She grabbed the cutting board's edge and pulled it hard so that the apple slices fell. But what she didn't realize...

...was a knife embedded on top of the cutting board.

When the knife suddenly loses its grip on the cutting board's wood, it falls off the table and plunges towards the oblivious Sylvie.

And at the last second.. a hand stopped the knife from hitting her as it clattered to the ground across the room.

Blood trickled from above as Sylvie looked up — she saw a bleeding hand.

It was Iris...

Iris feels her knee, clutching at her bloodied palm.

"Tch.. I told you two to stay out of here! Can't you two just understand?!" She yelled at her siblings.

Felix approached Sylvie and helped her get down from the chair safely — the two quickly made their way to stand behind Iris, fingers intertwined and gazes locked to the ground.

"Why can't you two just be like other kids?! Why must you two always get on my bad side?! Do you two enjoy seeing me mad?!" She scolded the siblings again and again.

Both of them jumped at her words, they stood there shivering from top to bottom.

With trembling lips, Sylvie said;

"Aunt Iris... We were just looking for food.. Syl was hungry.." she admitted with watery eyes.

But Felix shielded her.

"No that's not true! I brought her here! I was responsible!"

Iris turned around abruptly, glaring at them.

But when she sees the genuinely scared faces of the siblings, her heart couldn't bear to do anything.

As quickly as her temper came, it melted into nonexistence.

She extended her hands and placed them gently on top of their heads.

"I'm sorry. I didn't realize I left you two in hunger." She apologized.

In the end, Iris decided to make the siblings a slightly burnt fried rice. It wasn't the perfect meal, but it's our story.
