Chapter 27 - Alone

"Do not be foolish, Stavan," she snapped but he was no longer looking at her.

Instead, his gaze swept across the bathing chamber, and a slow smile played on his lips. "And we are alone." Then his eyes fixed right back on her face. "All alone."

"Not for long!" She countered quickly. Her hands were still around her but the longer Stavan lingered in this chamber, the more vulnerable she felt. "My physicians are on their way and you know how swiftly their feets move when the Queen is in great peril."

A corner of his lips lifted in mockery. "But you are in no great peril, are you? Also, I assure you that they have their hands full at the moment. You are not on the top of their priorities." Then his voice dropped. "No one is coming. Not anytime soon, at least."

"Haron said—"

"No one is coming," he repeated firmly.

Her nails dug into her palms in the water.
