Panicked, Elias stepped outside. The city felt unfinished, like a sentence without a period. People moved slower. Streetlights flickered, undecided.

Then he saw her.

A girl sat on the curb, holding a notebook filled with blank pages.

"You took too many," she said without looking up.

"Took what?" Elias asked.

"Tomorrows." She finally met his eyes. "They aren't meant to be borrowed forever."
