Chapter 14
Ella Whitmore
'What's she doing here?'
'What does she even know about the books here?'
'I wonder why the alpha would bring a human here'
Whispers echoed behind me as I sat quietly in the Pack's library, reading a book about werewolves.
I didn't lift my gaze. Didn't pay attention to them.
I glanced through the book, my fingers curling tightly on it. I barely knew what they were saying in it. It was confusing.
With a frustrating sigh, I stood up to return the book to the shelf when a voice spoke behind me.
"I bet you don't even understand anything there, yeah?"
That was Elena.
Her footsteps echoed behind me, and as I turned around, she halted in front of me, arms crossed on her chest, and eyes burning with rage as they fixed on me.
My heart skipped as fear washed over me, but I composed myself.
"Hi, Elena!" I said softly, my voice almost shaky, but I made sure I steadied it.
Her brows flicked surprisingly.
For the time that I will be here, I need to be strong. If I showed them that I was scared of them, they would only bully me even more for that.
I lifted the book to her face, a soft smile creeping up my face, "it wasn't that difficult to understand at all…"
"Did you have a hard time when you first tried to read it?"
She snarled, her eyes flashing between brown and silver.
"How dare you!"
I didn't move.
"You think you could mess around because you have the alpha backing you now, huh?"
Silence.
"You stole what was mine, and now what—"
"No, I didn't,"
Colours drained from her face, "huh?"
"I heard werewolves, especially alphas, have only one mate for the rest of their lives…" I paused, closing the distance between us, a smirk pulling at my lips, "If he was really yours, I doubt he would've come to me,"
I had no idea what her deal was... Why she was always attacking me, and the truth is, I'm too busy with other things that I don't even care about that.
I heard that she's always been obsessed with Kael, but didn't get the full story.
Her eyes burned into mine, but before I could say another word, Elena grabbed my neck, and in a split second, slammed me so hard into one of the shelves… I choked.
"Whoa… Elena never disappoints," A voice spoke in the crowd as they applauded her.
Her nails dug into my neck, a smirk pulling at her lips as she said, "you know I could snap your head off, huh?"
My heart pounded, hands trembled as I tapped her hand, unable to breathe. But her grip tightened even more.
None of them attempted to help me.
Why would they? They wanted to see me dead anyway.
Elena didn't stop choking me. My vision blurred, my body growing weaker… and all the werewolves just stood there with anxious eyes, waiting for me to drop dead.
The door suddenly burst open, a heavy wind gushed in, and the next second, Elena's hand snapped from my neck before she went flying across the library, slamming hard into the wall.
The brick wall broke.
'Alpha is here'
Someone whispered before my legs gave in. But just before I reached the ground, Kael appeared beside me, gathering me in his arms, his eyes piercing down at me with worries.
"Ella? Are you okay?"
I sighed in relief. Perhaps I would've been dead by now if he didn't show up.
I managed to nod my head, breathing heavily.
He lifted his gaze to Elena, and she scrambled back on the floor, her eyes filled with fear.
Kael stood, and the next second, he was pinning Elena to the wall, his nails digging into her arm.
She cried out, grimacing in pain, but he didn't stop.
Everyone watched. Not even a single werewolf could utter a word.
Fear washed over me, my chest pounding. If nobody did something about this, he would surely hurt Elena, but none of them looked like they could interfere.
I was scared also. What if he hurt me?
"You're hurting me!" She groaned, struggling to break free from him, but his grip was too firm.
Blood was already spilling from her arm.
Kael finally spoke, his voice tearing through the atmosphere, full of rage, "what did the Pack rule say about bullying?"
Elena's scream tore across the library following the cracking of her bone.
The fuck! He's going to break her bone at this point.
Without a second thought, I dashed towards Kael, holding his hand, but stiffened as our eyes met.
His eyes had changed into golden colour. His nails had grown into claws, and his lips parted, revealing the fangs in his mouth.
My legs weakened before giving in, as I crashed to the floor.
I wasn't supposed to be shocked… I already knew who he was, but still, I couldn't help it.
He left Elena and quickly came to gather me in his arms. He was back to his normal self then.
He carried me in a bridal style, as if I weighed nothing.
Then he declared, "Ella is mine… My mate, hence under my protection. Touch as little as a strand of her hair, and you will answer to me directly,"
That was the longest speech I've heard from Kael since I met him.
Some of the werewolves nodded in acceptance, while some exchanged glances… One that clearly said that they weren't cool with what Kael said, but none of them said anything.
Kael continued, "following the Pack's rule, Elena is found guilty for bullying, and hence, will he punished accordingly…" he glanced at Elena.
"Lock her up," and with that, he stepped out of the library.
He took me to my room.
"Are you okay? Do you need me to get the physician?" He asked as he gently lowered me to the bed.
I shook my head, "I'm fine,"
Silence thickened between us for a moment, then he moved his hand to my face, tucking my hair away from my face.
"I will make sure no harm comes to you. I promise," he said, his eyes softened again.
I stared for a moment, then nodded with a small smile.
"Let me know if you need anything," and with that, he stood and strode out of my room.
I sighed deeply.
I walked over to stand before the mirror. The marks from Elena's fingers were still on my neck. They didn't look like fingers… They were claws.
Elena is one problem, and the other werewolves are another. They would do anything to get rid of me.
The only thing keeping me safe now is Kael.
I pressed a hand against my pounding chest, tears blurring my vision as only one question echoed in my head.
What if one day Kael isn't here and they successfully kill me?
