Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Empty Slot

The world of Contoia. A place where belief can change the world in ways beyond understanding. Where conviction can be the final push needed for ultimate power. In order to be the strongest, you must give up everything to ascend.

Where the strong are locked away and the weak aim to join. Because no matter how strong you are, you will never grow without sacrifice. Force does not equal power.

Making his way to the main hall where all the other students should be for the grading process. {Let's just get this over with before I chicken out,} he thought to himself as he pushed open the door to the main hall. There stood all the other students, all waiting for something. {What are they all waiting for??}

"Now then, let's begin the grading," one of the teachers said sarcastically. They all were waiting for Robert. All 1022 other students and 30 teachers are just waiting for Robert. {Oh boy. I sure made an impression}.

He quickly sped to his designated seat. To his left were two golden-haired students. A boy and girl. The boy had short golden spiky hair, golden eyes, and a sheathed sword in his hand.

The girl had short golden hair that seemed to barely touch her shoulders. Her proper posture made Robert adjust his own. Her beauty was otherworldly. Her amber eyes emanated like two twin suns. Her white skin covered in the academy's full uniform made her seem familiar to Robert. His heart skipping several beats

"Now let's start," the same teacher exclaimed. One by one, students stood up from their seats, and their stats were put on the screen for everyone to see.

"Rose Pendragon. Please stand." The beautiful golden-haired girl stood, and her stats were put on the screen. Her hair seemed more red than golden when she stood.

{What is duality?} Robert thought as she sat down. She glanced at Robert before quickly looking away. Her hair seemed to be back to normal.

"Richard Pendragon. Please stand." The boy stood up; his spiky hair bounced a bit on his way up, and he still held the see-through sheath and sword.

{Wow. This guy is monstrous; he has to be the Benevolent Knight } Robert, and every other student was in awe. This person was a different breed altogether. The knight sat down and smiled at Robert, a sweet but knowing smile.

"Robert. Please stand." Robert quickly stood, arms and hands at his sides. As the screen then read.

[Soul Concept -

Staring at the screen, Robert's face was drenched in shock. {WHAT. WHY IS THERE NOTHING AT MY SOUL CONCEPT?!?!} Standing there, his face draining as the other students began to murmur the same thing, "Why is it empty?"

They were just loud enough for him to hear. {I DON'T KNOW!}

He sat down, face unchanging. This was the biggest shock of his life.

The grading of other students continued, but the clouds of thought in Robert's mind were still there. He wanted to leave. He did not mind not having a soul concept, but there was nothing. No text. No brackets. No question mark. Just empty space.

As the last student's stats were displayed. Everyone went to receive their student armbands. Robert just sat. He was still stuck. "Why?" was the only thing flooding his mind. He knew he had to go home.

He finally stood and went for the exit. He was walking now. No running. No sprinting. Just a slow walk.

As he was about to exit the academy grounds, a blue-eyed and -haired person blocked Robert's path. "Why stand for this injustice? Sign my petition to force equality for us without soul concepts."

The Short Stack exclaimed like a preacher.

Robert was triggered. { Really, I just got shown I don't have an identity, and now this. } Robert was conflicted. He didn't want to decide now. Not this topic. "Why me?" Robert asked, his voice calm and dark.

"Because we are the sa—" Robert shoved the short stack out of the way, his patience finally gone. He did not want to hear it and began to run. Not Home. Not to a friend. He just ran. {Why? Why now???? Why} "WHY ME!!!!!!"

He kept running for hours till his bones clicked, muscles went numb, and his stamina was gone. He collapsed under a maple tree. Falling onto a root gave him something to hold onto when he felt he had nothing.

Arms wrapped around his chest. The body of a woman lay on top of him. Her body heat emanating into his very soul as she whispered in a sweet and caring voice, "Calm down. Everything is fine. I finally found you. My love."
