Chapter 15 - Under Heaven’s Eye

Xu Yang stood on the curved roof of an old watchtower at the edge of the village, one foot resting on the broken tiles as the morning sun spread across the valley.Below, the village looked peaceful.Xu Yang flicked a loose pebble from the roof with his toe and watched it fall into the empty street. It landed without making a sound. His eyes narrowed. "Even the dogs are hiding." A soft laugh came from behind him. "Perhaps they have better instincts than you." Xu Yang turned sharply. Qing Li was sitting on the highest wooden beam of the tower as if he had been there all morning, one leg hanging over the edge while he casually ate a red fruit he had apparently stolen from somewhere.

Xu Yang stared at him. "Were you listening to me?" Qing Li took another bite. "No." He paused."I was watching you talk to yourself." Xu Yang's expression darkened. "Get down." "Why?" Qing Li smiled and leaned backward until he was almost falling from the beam. Xu Yang's eyes widened. "Qing Li." Qing Li deliberately let himself drop. Xu Yang caught him around the waist before he could hit the ground. For a moment, Qing Li simply looked at him with a completely innocent expression. "See? You worry too much." Xu Yang slowly released him. "One day I'm going to let you fall." Qing Li dusted his sleeve and grinned. "You won't."

Xu Yang turned away before Qing Li could see the reluctant smile at the corner of his mouth."I should have let you fall." "And yet you caught me." "Because you're an idiot."Qing li winked and said,"A charming idiot." Xu Yang rolled his eyes, but his attention quickly returned to the village. The playful mood disappeared from his face. His ears lifted. Somewhere beyond the fields, a single wooden shutter creaked. Then stopped. No footsteps followed. No bird flew from the nearby trees.

Xu Yang's fingers tightened around the edge of the roof. "Something changed." Qing Li stopped smiling. He tossed the half-eaten fruit aside and jumped down beside him with effortless grace. His gaze moved across the rooftops. "I felt it too." Xu Yang crouched, eyes following the narrow road leading toward the fields.Qing Li leaned closer, then suddenly reached over and tapped Xu Yang's forehead. "Don't frown so much." Xu Yang slapped his hand away. "Touch me again and I'll bite you." Qing Li immediately held out his hand. "Go ahead." Xu Yang stared at him. "Qing Li!." Then faint shimmer appeared behind them. Yan Luo stepped onto the wooden platform without a sound. He glanced at the two of them, then toward the distant fields. "They're moving." Xu Yang's expression sharpened. "Where?" Yan Luo pointed toward the northern road. "There." Qing Li followed his gaze.

The sunlight over the fields suddenly bent for a brief moment, like heat rising from stone. Xu Yang moved to the edge of the tower. "I saw that." "So did I," Qing Li said. "Three times since dawn." Xu Yang looked at him. "Three?" Qing Li nodded. "The first was near the river. The second was behind the temple. The third..." He pointed toward the wheat fields. "...was there." Xu Yang jumped from the tower. His boots struck the ground, and he immediately broke into a run. Qing Li followed, clearing a low wall in one smooth movement before landing beside him. "You could wait for once." Xu Yang didn't slow down. "You could stop following me."

Qing Li smiled. "Neither of those things is happening." They reached the edge of the fields. Xu Yang suddenly stopped. Qing Li nearly walked into him and caught himself by grabbing Xu Yang's shoulder. "You really should warn people before becoming a wall." Xu Yang raised one finger to his lips. Qing Li's expression changed instantly. He looked ahead. The wheat was moving, but there was no wind. One section bent slowly toward them, stalk by stalk, as if something invisible was walking through it. Xu Yang lowered his stance. His claws slid free beneath his sleeves. Qing Li's silver eyes narrowed, and the playful look disappeared. "Behind me." Xu Yang glanced at him. "You're giving orders now?" "Only when you're about to do something stupid."

Xu Yang stepped forward anyway. A sharp crack split the air. Something shot from the wheat.Qing Li moved first. He spun sideways, caught the invisible force with his palm, and was thrown several steps backward. He slid across the dirt before stopping against a tree. Xu Yang's eyes flashed. "Qing Li!" Qing Li slowly stood, brushed dirt from his sleeve, and smiled. "That was rude." Xu Yang disappeared from where he stood. In the next instant, his claws struck the empty air. A burst of pressure exploded across the field, flattening the wheat around him.

For one brief moment, a distorted figure appeared between the stalks. Xu Yang lunged. The figure vanished. His claws cut through nothing. He landed lightly and turned, hair moving across his face as his eyes searched the field. Qing Li walked up behind him. "Missed." Xu Yang glanced at him. "I know." Qing Li crouched and picked up a small black feather from the ground. He held it between two fingers, studying it. "This wasn't here before." Yan Luo appeared a few steps behind them. His arrival was quiet, almost ordinary. He looked at the feather once. "Don't touch it." Qing Li immediately dropped it. "You could have said that before I touched it."

Yan Luo looked at him. "I assumed you would know." Qing Li sighed. "Everyone assumes too much about me." Xu Yang ignored them and looked toward the far end of the field. A faint thread of smoke was curling upward between the wheat. His ears twitched. "There." Qing Li's expression became serious again. "That's deliberate." Yan Luo nodded. "Yes." Xu Yang's claws slowly disappeared beneath his sleeves. The strange pressure in the air returned, subtle but unmistakable. Something was waiting. Something was being pushed closer. He took one step toward the smoke. Qing Li caught his sleeve. "Don't." Xu Yang looked down at his hand. "Why?" Qing Li's voice softened. "Because whatever is there wants you to notice it."

Xu Yang looked back at the smoke. "Then I'll notice it without touching it." Qing Li released him. "That's the first sensible thing you've said today." Xu Yang gave him a sideways look. "You fell from a roof ten minutes ago." Qing Li smiled. "And you caught me." Xu Yang's eyes narrowed, but before he could answer, the smoke shifted. For a moment, the entire field seemed to bend toward it. Xu Yang's expression hardened. A faint disturbance rippled through the air a probability twist that he had learned to sense over time. Heaven's hand, nudging reality."Do you intervene?" Qing Li asked softly. Xu Yang's ears twitched. "I can't… not yet." Yan Luo's voice came from above, low and calm. "Observe. Patience is your test Mistakes are costly."

The wheat field shivered unnaturally. Xu Yang's ears snapped toward the sound. The stalks parted, and a small, malformed spirit beast burst into the open. It looked like a fox, but its body was too thin, its movements too sharp, and its faintly glowing eyes held an unnatural focus. It stopped for half a heartbeat and stared directly toward the village. Xu Yang's tail bristled. "That's no ordinary beast." Qing Li stepped from behind the trees, his gaze following the creature. "It isn't here to hunt." The fox suddenly sprinted toward the village.

Xu Yang's expression hardened. "It's being pushed." He dropped from the roof before Qing Li could stop him. His body shifted in midair, transforming into his cat form before his paws touched the ground. He shot across the dirt path, moving so quickly that only a blur of fur crossed the villagers' line of sight. The beast glanced back and accelerated. Xu Yang cut across its path, forcing it away from the houses. The fox snapped at him, its claws scraping against the ground as Xu Yang twisted aside. He didn't attack. Instead, he drove it toward the narrow path leading away from the village, striking the earth beside it whenever it tried to turn. "Come on," he muttered under his breath. "Run somewhere else." The beast suddenly veered left.

Xu Yang reacted instantly, sliding beneath a low branch before springing onto a stone wall. From there, he kicked a loose branch into its path. The fox stumbled, recovered, and continued toward the ravine. Xu Yang followed close behind, never touching it directly, guiding its movements one step at a time. At the edge of the ravine, the beast finally stopped. Its glowing eyes turned toward him. For a moment, neither moved. Then the creature lowered its head and gave a strange, trembling growl. Xu Yang's pupils narrowed. "You're afraid too." The beast suddenly leapt.

Xu Yang twisted in the air, landed behind it, and struck the ground with his paw. A thin wave of spiritual force pushed the creature toward the opposite side of the ravine without harming it. The fox landed safely and disappeared into the trees. Xu Yang remained still for a moment, watching the branches settle. "Go." He shifted back into human form and straightened his sleeves. From the treeline, Qing Li finally stepped out and smiled."Good." Xu Yang glanced at him. "You could have helped." "You didn't need help."

Qing Li walked closer, hands behind his back. "Your reflexes were quick. You kept it away from the village without revealing yourself." Xu Yang looked toward the ravine. "But?" Qing Li tilted his head. "You hesitated when it looked at you." Xu Yang's fingers tightened. "For less than a second." "A second is enough." Qing Li reached over and lightly flicked Xu Yang's forehead. "And you were curious." Xu Yang stared at him. "Do that again." Qing Li immediately took two steps backward. "I value my life."

Xu Yang almost smiled despite himself. "Smart." Qing Li laughed softly. "I'm learning." A sudden pressure rolled through the air. Both of them stopped. The smile disappeared from Qing Li's face. Xu Yang's ears lifted as the trees around them began to tremble. Yan Luo's voice came quietly from behind. "They are coming." Xu Yang turned. Yan Luo stood beneath the trees, his gaze fixed toward the village. "Heaven's threads." His voice remained calm. "Observe, or you will be caught." Xu Yang looked back toward the ravine. "That creature was only the beginning."

Yan Luo gave a slight nod. "The first thread has been pulled." Qing Li looked toward the village. "Then we should expect the next one to pull harder." A slight shimmer ran across the village. Windows rattled, animals stirred, and for a moment, everything seemed poised on a knife's edge. Xu Yang felt it the invisible presence brushing against reality, checking, probing, testing. He leapt back into the shadows. Every instinct screamed alert. Even as a hidden observer, he could feel how delicate the village's calm had become. "The next test will be more direct," Qing Li said softly. "Subtlety will no longer save you." Yan Luo's form flickered slightly in the rising sun. "Heaven is patient, but it does not forgive oversight. Your next misstep may be your last."

The sun climbed higher,Xu Yang crouched silently atop the granary roof, his tail coiled around his legs. His sharp cat eyes scanned the streets below. Villagers moved cautiously, glancing over their shoulders more than usual. He watched the villagers for a moment, his expression turning serious. If I make one mistake, they could get dragged into this. I can't let that happen... A gust of wind suddenly brushed past his ears. He turned quickly, but nothing was there. His ears lowered slightly. Great. Now I'm getting nervous over every little movement... He sighed and looked away. Stay calm. Think first..."Xu Yang." He glanced toward the nearby roof.

Qing Li stood there, watching him with a faint smile, "Rumors will spread faster than you think," he murmured. "Even a small strange thing can become a story here. One person sees smoke, another sees a shadow, and by sunset they will believe something dangerous has entered the village." Xu Yang flexed his claws against the wooden beam beneath him. "I know. That's why I've been careful." Qing Li glanced at him. "You have been careful. But you are also too focused on hiding yourself. Sometimes the safest move is not to hide. It is to make the villagers look somewhere else."

Xu Yang frowned. "And how exactly am I supposed to do that without making things worse?" Before Qing Li could answer, Yan Luo's voice came quietly from the roof ridge above them. "By thinking before you move. Patience can become arrogance when you start believing you understand the test. The villagers are curious, the threads are stirring, and Heaven does not forgive mistakes." Xu Yang looked up, his expression tightening. "So I'm being tested from every side." "Not only you," Yan Luo replied. "Watch the villagers too. Their reactions may tell you what Heaven wants to know."

Xu Yang lowered his gaze. If Heaven was watching everyone, then even a simple act of helping someone could become a clue. I can't protect them by exposing myself. But I can't stand here and watch something happen either... Then sudden scream cut through the morning. Xu Yang's head snapped toward the eastern field. Smoke was rising above the wheat, thin and gray. He jumped from the granary roof and landed without a sound. "Stay here." he called softly. Qing Li followed at once, dropping from the nearby roof. "You know I won't." Xu Yang shot him a look. "Then at least don't interfere." Qing Li gave a faint smile. "I only interfere when you are about to do something reckless." "That happens more often than you think," Yan Luo said from behind them. Xu Yang sighed. "You two are making this harder." Another shout came from the field.

Xu Yang stopped arguing and ran. The smoke curled between the wheat stalks. There was no large fire, only several small flames burning in places where they should not have been. Xu Yang crouched and studied them. The flames were too evenly placed. The wind was moving in the wrong direction, yet the smoke was drifting toward the village. His eyes narrowed. Heaven wasn't trying to burn the field. It wanted someone to react... "It's bait," Xu Yang whispered. Qing Li stopped beside him. "You noticed quickly." "Because it's too clean. A real fire would spread with the wind."

Xu Yang touched the ground and felt a faint pulse beneath his fingers. The threads were there. Small movements of probability, pushing one person toward the field, another toward the well, another toward the road. He pulled his hand back. "It's guiding them." Qing Li's expression became serious. "Then what will you do?" Xu Yang watched a group of villagers running toward the smoke. "Stop the fire before they reach it." "And if stopping it creates another anomaly?" Xu Yang hesitated. "Then I'll deal with that." Yan Luo's voice came from the edge of the field. "Good. You finally understand the choice. You cannot remove every danger. You can only choose which danger leaves the smallest trace."

Xu Yang glanced back. "You could have said that earlier." "You needed to reach the answer yourself." "Of course you did," Xu Yang muttered. He shifted into cat form and disappeared into the wheat. Moving low, he slipped between the stalks and reached the nearest flame. With one quick movement, he knocked burning grass into a shallow ditch and covered it with damp soil. The second flame went out just as quietly. The third was about to spread toward the dry wheat when Xu Yang rushed forward and pushed it into the ditch.

A gust of wind swept through the field. For a moment, the smoke thickened around him. Xu Yang froze. His ears flattened. Don't move too fast. If this is part of the test, it wants me to panic... He waited until the feeling faded, then slipped back into the shadows. The villagers reached the field moments later. They found only a few blackened patches of grass and a thin trail of smoke. "Strange," one man muttered. "There was more smoke a moment ago." Another pointed toward the wheat. "Maybe someone started a fire and it went out."

Xu Yang watched from behind the low stone wall near the field, his heart still beating fast. They didn't see me. Good. But the threads had changed... Qing Li appeared beside him. "You almost rushed out when the wind changed." Xu Yang's ears twitched. "I thought someone was there." "There was." Xu Yang looked at him sharply. "Who?" Qing Li shook his head. "I don't know." Xu Yang's expression darkened.Qing Li leaned against the stone wall, watching the villagers. "You did well, but you should remember something. You are not the only one learning from this. Whoever is moving these threads may be watching how quickly you adapt." Xu Yang was silent for a moment. "So even when I succeed, I might be giving myself away." "Exactly." Yan Luo's voice came softly from the roof of a nearby house. "Every action leaves a trace. The question is whether the trace is strong enough for someone to follow."

Xu Yang looked toward him. "Then tell me this. How do I know when acting is safer than waiting?" Yan Luo was quiet for a moment before answering. "When waiting will cause more damage than your action. Until then, observe." Xu Yang looked back at the field. "I hate tests like this." Qing Li smiled faintly. "Because you cannot fight them?" "Because I cannot see them." "Then learn to fight what you cannot see." Xu Yang gave him an annoyed look. "You make everything sound simple." "It isn't simple." Qing Li's smile faded. "That's why you need to stop treating every strange thing as an attack. Sometimes the best answer is to do nothing."

Xu Yang looked at the villagers again. "And sometimes doing nothing is exactly what they want." Yan Luo nodded slightly. "Now you are thinking correctly." Xu Yang crouched low, ears twitching. He could sense the villagers whispering already, rumors forming in the air like invisible threads: strange things happening near the fields… a shadow moving where no one should… They suspect nothing, but it won't stay that way...Xu Yang kept to the shadows, moving from rooftop to rooftop, careful to avoid the curious eyes of villagers and the occasional stray dogs.

By afternoon, small groups of villagers had begun speaking openly about the "strange happenings." "They say someone or something is watching us!" one elderly man whispered, glancing around nervously. "Must be a demon!" another replied, eyes wide. "Or some spirit from the forest." Xu Yang's ears flicked. From a distance, Qing Li and Yan Luo observed him silently. They did not intervene, only watched.
