Chapter 41 - The Space Between Truth and Denial

Lin Chen didn't move. He stood there, staring, as if the moment would correct itself if he waited long enough..It didn't.

Xu Yang stood still.for the first time since everything began he didn't know what to do.

He had faced distortions and threads.

He had stood in moments where reality itself bent and rewrote around him and yet none of that felt as uncertain as this.

His gaze rested on Lin Chen Unmoving.

He was Watching and Waiting.

A thought surfaced unwanted.

What if he doesn't accept it?(.....)

It lingered then deepened.

What if this is where it ends?(.....)

A pause. Xu Yang's fingers curled slightly at his side.

You should have said something earlier. (.....)

Another thought followed immediately

Would it have changed anything? (.....)

He didn't have an answer.

Because he already knew the truth.

Xu Yang's chest tightened slightly Subtle and

Unfamiliar.

If he rejects this…(....)

A brief pause Then that's it.

No going back, No returning to quiet moments.

His gaze lowered for a fraction of a second then lifted again Steady.

He didn't step back didn't hide.

Because even now Even knowing what might happen h e didn't want to lie.

Not to him. Not anymore.

Xu Yang stood in front of him calm, steady, completely out of place. For a few seconds, no one spoke.

Then Lin Chen asked, quietly,

"…Where is my cat?"

Qing Li let out a small breath. "…You're looking at him."

Lin Chen didn't even glance at him.

"I didn't ask you."

His eyes stayed locked on Xu Yang. "Answer me."

A pause. Xu Yang looked at him, expression unreadable. "…I'm here."

Lin Chen's jaw tightened instantly.

"No."

A short breath. "Don't say it like that."

Qing Li frowned slightly. "You're making this harder than it needs to be."

"Stay out of it," Lin Chen said flatly.

Yan Luo spoke for the first time, voice low.

"It's already reacting."

Lin Chen ignored that too.

He took a step forward Closer. "…Say it clearly."

Xu Yang didn't move and fidn't step back.

"…I was there," he said.

"That's not what I asked."

"I stayed with you."

Lin Chen's expression flickered.

"That wasn't the question either."

A pause then, quieter."…Was any of it real?"

Xu Yang didn't hesitate. "Yes."

The answer came too quickly and too certain.

Like there had never been a moment where it wasn't true.

And somehow that made it worse.

Lin Chen looked away, a quiet breath leaving him before he could stop it. When he looked back, there was something different in his eyes now not just confusion but Something sharper.

"You followed me everywhere."

"Yes."

"You stayed near me… even when I didn't call you."

"Yes."

A small, dry laugh slipped out of Lin Chen.

"…Right."

He shook his head slightly, like he was trying to piece something together and failing.

"I talked to you," he said quietly.

A pause. "…Like an idiot."

Xu Yang didn't respond.

"I told you things I wouldn't tell anyone else."

His voice tightened just a little.

"You just sat there… listening."

Another pause then, he said softpy .

"I thought you didn't understand."

Xu Yang's gaze lowered slightly. "I understood."

That made Lin Chen go still for a second

He didn't speak then he let out a breath, something almost bitter in it.

"…Of course you did."

His fingers curled at his side.

"So what was that?" he asked, looking at Xu Yang again. "Was I just entertainment?"

"No." The answer was immediate and Firm.

But Lin Chen didn't look convinced.

"You expect me to believe that?" he said quietly. "From your side, it must've looked ridiculous."

A pause. "Me talking. You just… watching."

His jaw tightened.

"…You must've been enjoying it."

Xu Yang's expression shifted just slightly.

"No."

Lin Chen let out another small laugh, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Then what?"

Silence. Xu Yang didn't look away this time.

"…I stayed because I wanted to."

That stopped him.

"I didn't have to," Xu Yang continued quietly. "I wasn't forced to. I wasn't pretending."

A pause. "I stayed because it mattered."

Lin Chen's breath caught just barely.

He didn't respond immediately.

Didn't look away either.

And for the first time t he silence between them didn't feel like distance.

It felt like something breaking open.

Silence stretched. Qing Li shifted slightly. "We don't have time for this."

Lin Chen snapped, "Then leave."

That shut him up. For a brief second, Qing Li just stood there caught off guard.

Then his eyes narrowed slightly, irritation flashing across his face. He turned his head just enough to glance at Yan Luo.

A silent exchange and acomplaint without words. Yan Luo met his gaze and for the first time since this started the corner of his lips lifted Not fully But enough.

A quiet, almost amused reaction As if he found the situation… interesting.

Or Qing Li's reaction more so.

Qing Li's expression darkened instantly.

"…You think this is funny?" he muttered under his breath.

Yan Luo didn't answer.

But the faint trace of that almost-smile didn't disappear. That only made Qing Li more annoyed. He clicked his tongue softly and looked away again, clearly deciding not to push it further.

Lin Chen didn't notice.

Or if he did. He didn't care.

His attention never left Xu Yang.

Yan Luo's gaze moved between them, then toward the air briefly. "It's getting worse," he said.

"Let it," Lin Chen replied.

Then, to Xu Yang again ...

"…What are you?"

The question was direct now.

Xu Yang held his gaze.."I don't fully know."

Lin Chen let out a short, dry laugh.

"That's not an answer."

"I know."

"Then give me one."

Xu Yang didn't respond immediately.

Qing Li crossed his arms. "You're asking questions he can't answer."

Lin Chen didn't look at him. "I didn't ask you either."

Qing Li clicked his tongue. "You're really testing my patience."

"Then go."

Another silence. Yan Luo spoke again, quieter. "…The conversation itself is triggering it."

Lin Chen frowned slightly. "Triggering what?"

No one answered directly. Xu Yang stepped forward.

"Lin Chen."

That made him pause the way his name sounded Different.

Lin Chen took a small step back.

"…Don't."

Xu Yang stopped.

"Don't come closer."

A pause. "…You're not—"

He stopped again Didn't finish.

Xu Yang watched him carefully. "…I'm still the same."

"No, you're not," Lin Chen said immediately.

A beat. "…You're not."

Silence.

Then "…You ate with me," Lin Chen said.

"Yes."

"You stayed in my room."

"Yes."

"You slept there like it was normal."

"It was."

Lin Chen shook his head slightly. "That's not normal."

"It was for me."

"That's not the same thing."

A pause.

Then, quieter ."…Why didn't you say anything?"

Xu Yang didn't answer right away.

"…Would it have changed anything?"

"Yes," Lin Chen said immediately.

Another pause. "…I would've known."

Xu Yang's gaze lowered slightly. "…You still do."

"That's not the same."

The air shifted faintly.

Qing Li noticed first. "…It's tightening again."

Yan Luo nodded slightly. "We're close to a limit."

Lin Chen looked between them briefly.

"…What are you two talking about?"

"Something you don't need to worry about right now," Qing Li said.

"That doesn't sound reassuring."

"It's not supposed to be."

Lin Chen looked back at Xu Yang.

"…Say it properly."

A pause. "…Say who you are."

This time He didn't look away and Didn't hesitate.

He Didn't give him space to avoid it.

Xu Yang met his gaze.

And for the first time there was no distance between them.

He was going to answer.

And the air Tightened. Lin Chen didn't blink.

Xu Yang met his gaze No hesitation this time.

"I..." The world Broke not shattered.

Just Skipped and Sound vanished.

Lin Chen's breath hitched as everything around him went unnaturally hollow, like someone had pulled the air out of the moment. His ears rang faintly, the silence pressing in harder than any noise.

"…What..."

The light flickered.Once.

Xu Yang's expression changed instantly.

"…Too late."

"What does that mean?" Lin Chen snapped.

No one answered him.

Because the air Moved.

Thin lines appeared, faint at first, like cracks in space then they sharpened.

Threads were Glowing. Everything around turn in red.threads began to spread around whole village. Sky colour went blank.

Qing Li let out a low whistle. "…Well. That's new."

Yan Luo didn't look amused. "No. That's worse."

The threads snapped forward.Fast.

Straight toward Xu Yang.

"Move!" Qing Li shouted.

Xu Yang stepped back, the space around him warping just enough to slow the threads as they closed in. They didn't stop but they dragged.

Xu Yang stepped back, the space around him warping just enough to slow the threads as they closed in. They didn't stop but they dragged, like something resisting a force that didn't fully belong to this world.

His hand lifted instinctively not to block but to reach. Fingers tightening slightly in the air, like he was trying to grasp something invisible.

The threads reacted just a little.

A faint tremor ran through them, their movements stuttering not stopping, not breaking but hesitating.

Xu Yang's eyes sharpened.

Then they changed. A faint glow flickered through them, something unnatural catching in his gaze like light reflecting off broken glass. For a brief second, the threads became clearer to him every line, every movement, every pull.

"I can ..." he started, breath catching.

His other hand came up, slower this time, like he was steadying himself.

Then he pulled not physically but something shifted.

The threads closest to him jerked, their direction twisting unnaturally, like they were being forced to follow a command they didn't want to obey.

Qing Li blinked. "…Wait."

Yan Luo's eyes narrowed slightly.

"He's not just slowing them."

Xu Yang's jaw tightened.

"I can't...hold..."

The threads resisted harder..Their movement snapped back violently, pushing against his control. The glow in his eyes flickered, unstable now.

His breath hitched and suddenly a sharp cough. Blood slipped from the corner of his lips, dark against his skin.

Qing Li's expression dropped immediately. "Xu yang!! Oh no, that's bad."

Xu Yang didn't stop. His fingers tightened again, trembling now.

The threads shook some bending.

Some snapping most pushing back harder.

His vision blurred for a second, the glow in his eyes flickering again.

"I can't hold them…" Xu Yang muttered.

"Then don't try to be a hero," Qing Li shot back.

Wind exploded outward Sharp and Violent.

It sliced through the air, cutting across the threads and forcing several off course.

A few snapped. Most didn't.

Line s twisted ayAdjusted.

"…They're really stubborn," Qing Li muttered, flicking his wrist again as another gust tore through them. "What are they, emotionally attached to ruining our day?"

Yan Luo didn't look impressed. "Focus."

"I am focusing," Qing Li said. "I'm focusing on how annoying this is."

Another thread lunged Xu Yang reacted again, forcing his hand forward.

"Stop..!"

The thread jerked mid-air.

For a split second it obeyed. Then it snapped back harder.

Xu Yang winced, another drop of blood slipping past his lips.

"…hey! Are you out of your mind?" Qing Li glanced at him, "maybe stop doing that before you die dramatically in front of us."

"I'm not dying," Xu Yang said, breath uneven.

"That's exactly what people who are about to die say."

Yan Luo stepped forward, flames igniting low and steady in his hand. "If you lose control, it gets worse."

"I noticed," Xu Yang muttered.

"Then stop pushing it."

Xu Yang didn't respond.

Because even now even struggling he didn't let go. His fingers curled again, slower this time, more careful.

The glow in his eyes dimmed but didn't disappear.

"…Just a little longer," he said under his breath.

Qing Li heard it. "…You're really stubborn too, you know that?"

Xu Yang exhaled weakly. "I've been told."

"Yeah? By who?"

A pause.

"…You," Xu Yang said.

Qing Li blinked.

"…Oh."

A beat. "…Fair."

Another wave of threads surged toward them.

Qing Li groaned. "Okay, I take it back. I don't have time for this "

Wind roared again.

Yan Luo's flames followed.

And Xu Yang Still barely standing tried to hold the line.

The strands recoiled, curling away as parts of them burned, edges fraying like something resisting damage.

"Oh?" Qing Li glanced at him. "So you can be useful."

Yan Luo didn't even look at him. "Try not to slow me down."

"Wow," Qing Li muttered. "Rude."

Another thread snapped toward them Qing Li flicked his wrist, wind slamming into it mid-air and throwing it off course.

"At least I don't set everything on fire when I panic," he added. "I'm not panicking."

"Sure," Qing Li shot back. "You just look like that all the time?"

Yan Luo's flames flared slightly higher. "That was a warning."

"Oh?" Qing Li smirked faintly. "Should I be scared?"

A thread sliced between them both reacted at the same time.

Wind collided with fire. The impact scattered sparks and air pressure outward, distorting the space for a split second.

Qing Li's expression darkened. "Watch it."

"Then stay out of my range."

"You are the range."

Another clash too close this time.

The threads pushed in again, faster, exploiting the gap between them.

"Seriously?" Qing Li snapped. "We're doing this now?"

Yan Luo's gaze sharpened. "You started it."

"I made a comment."

"You're still talking."

"And you're still annoying."

"Enough." Xu Yang's voice cut through them.

Xu yang was voice was not loud but sharp enough to land.

Both of them stilled just slightly.

Xu Yang exhaled, forcing his hand forward again, the faint glow in his eyes flickering as the threads nearest to him faltered for a split second.

"If you two keep fighting each other," he said, breath uneven, "you can argue later after we're not getting erased."

A pause. Qing Li clicked his tongue, glancing away. "…Fine."

Yan Luo didn't respond, but his flames steadied. Another wave of threads surged toward them.

Qing Li rolled his shoulders slightly. "After this, I'm definitely arguing."

"…You always are," Yan Luo said.

"Yeah, well, this time I have better material."

Xu Yang didn't bother responding.

He just tightened his grip on the invisible tension in the air and held.

Another thread shot toward Xu Yang Closer.

This was Faster this time.

Yan Luo moved instantly, flame intercepting it mid-air.

"…Don't let it touch you," he said.

Xu Yang exhaled sharply. "I figured."

"You don't look like you did."

"I'm managing."

"You're barely managing."

Qing Li cut in, "Can you two stop argue now? How many times I have to say!"

Yan Luo didn't even glance at him. "Then stop interrupting."

Qing Li blinked. "…I'm interrupting? You're the one criticizing him mid-fight!"

"At least I'm being accurate."

"Oh, great," Qing Li shot back, sending another sharp gust through the threads.

"Next time, maybe give him a performance review after we survive."

Xu Yang let out a strained breath. "Can we not schedule my evaluation right now."

Another thread snapped toward him he flinched, forcing his hand up again, trying to slow it but jerked, resisted then Yan Luo's flames burned it apart.

"…Focus," Yan Luo said.

"I am focusing," Xu Yang muttered.

"Then focus better."

Qing Li groaned loudly. "He's literally coughing blood and you're telling him to 'focus better'? Do you hear yourself?"

Yan Luo finally glanced at him. "Do you want me to lower my standards?"

"Yes," Qing Li said immediately. "A lot. Right now."

A brief pause then even Xu Yang let out a weak, breathless sound that almost resembled a laugh.

"…You two are unbelievable."

"Not the time," Yan Luo said.

"Exactly," Qing Li added. "So stop talking like this is training."

Another wave of threads surged forward.

Qing Li's expression sharpened instantly as wind gathered again around him.

"Alright, enough talking," he muttered. "If we mess this up, I'm blaming both of you."

"You already are," Yan Luo replied calmly.

"…Fair."

Wind surged again, faster this time, slicing through multiple threads at once. The air screamed slightly under the pressure.

Lin Chen flinched. He could see it now but not clearly.

Lines in the air Moving and attacking. Every line attacking like thunder.

"…What are those things?" he asked under his breath.

No one answered Or maybe they couldn't.

Because everything was happening too fast.

Another thread snapped toward him. Lin Chen stiffened it curved and Missed him completely.

He blinked. "…What?"

Another passed. Again line Avoiding him.

Like he wasn't there.

His chest tightened.

"…Why aren't they ?"

A sharp gust cut off his words as Qing Li's wind surged past him again.

"Xu Yang!" Qing Li called. "How long can you hold that?"

"Not long!"

"Define 'not long'!"

"…Very not long!"

"That's not helpful!"

Yan Luo moved again, flames spreading wider now, forcing the threads back.

"They're focusing on him," he said. "We keep them off, he stabilizes."

Qing Li snorted. "That plan sounds suspiciously optimistic."

"Do you have a better one?"

"Yes...leave."

"…No."

"Then stop complaining."

Another Stronger wave hit.

This time More threads and More pressure.

Xu Yang staggered slightly.

The distortion around him flickered.

For a second everything slowed.

The threads hesitated.

The air froze Then snapped back harder.

"...They're pushing through!" Qing Li said sharply.

"Then push harder," Yan Luo replied.

"Easy for you to say!"

Wind roared, this time stronger, pulling everything around it into motion. The threads were forced back again but not as far.

Not as easily.

"They're learning," Qing Li muttered.

"They're adapting," Xu Yang corrected.

"…That's worse."

Lin Chen took a step forward No one stopped him.

Everyone busy with threads so no one noticed. "…Xiao ye"

His voice felt small compared to everything happening.

Xu Yang didn't turn.

"Stay back!"

"I'm already back!"

"Further back!"

Lin Chen frowned. "There is no further back!"

Another thread rushed toward Xu Yang closer than before Yan Luo's flames collided with it mid-air, burning it apart.

"…You're slipping," Yan Luo said.

"I know!"

"Then fix it."

"I'm trying!"

Qing Li shot him a look. "You're being very unhelpful right now."

Yan Luo finally glanced at him. "And you're talking too much."

"I always talk this much."

"Yes. That's the problem."

Qing Li clicked his tongue, but didn't respond because another wave hit Harder and more aggressive.

The air warped visibly now.

Even Lin Chen could see it.

The space bending and twisting.

"…This isn't normal," he muttered.

"No," Qing Li said under his breath. "It's really not."

Xu Yang's breathing grew uneven.

The distortion around him faltered again.

Just for a second but it was enough.

One thread broke through.

Shot straight toward him.

"Xu Yang!" Qing Li shouted.

Time seemed to slow Yan Luo moved

Flames surged the thread burned and

Stopped just short.

Xu Yang froze for a second Then exhaled sharply. "…That was close."

"Don't let there be a next time," Yan Luo said.

"I'll do my best," Xu Yang muttered.

"Do better."

Qing Li rolled his eyes. "He's doing fine. You're just dramatic."

"I'm practical."

"You're annoying."

"And you're loud."

"Can you both.."

"Shut up?" they said at the same time.

Qing Li paused.

"…Okay, that was rude."

For a brief second despite everything there was a strange, almost absurd normalcy.

Then it broke. The threads stopped attacking.

All at once. The air stilled.

Qing Li frowned. "…That's not good."

"No," Yan Luo said quietly. "It's not."

Xu Yang's gaze sharpened.

"They're not stopping."

Lin Chen looked around, breathing uneven.

"Then why did they..."

"They're changing," Xu Yang said.

The threads weren't gone.

They had pulled back and Repositioned.

Threads Forming something Bigger and more controlled.

"…That's new," Qing Li muttered.

Yan Luo didn't respond.

His flames burned brighter.

Lin Chen looked at Xu Yang again.

This time not confused and not denying.

Just Worried.

"…You're in the middle of this, aren't you?"

Xu Yang didn't answer.

The air tightened again Heavier and Darker.

Xu Yang exhaled slowly.

"…It's adapting again."

And this time It didn't feel like something they could push back so easily.
