Chapter 2 - The System

The Lost Vampire System Chapter 2 - The System

"Jareth!" Mia yelled trying to wake her brother up. "Jareth!" She was worried because if she were to call the ambulance for him it will cost them money, and the police wouldn't do anything since they were classified as level ones by the government. The humans had created a system in how to classify their power and level, but since they had no power they were classified as level 1 by 0:1. No ability and a power of one.

Jareth slowly came too. "What happened?" he croaked.

"I don't know." She said still panicked. "That's why I'm asking you."

Jareth slowly started to get up. He felt his head to make sure it wasn't damaged, then he looked about the room. The first thing he noticed was that the room was a mess. The couch rolled on its side, papers from school everywhere, appliances littered the floor. He tried to recall what had happened before he ended up on the floor. He was fixing his glasses, but then what? He got up looking around until he spotted his glasses. Mia was still there patiently waiting for his response.

Jareth picked up his glasses and proceeded to put them on his face. Immediately his eyesight became blurry.

"What the…" Jareth said as he took off his glasses and he could see again. He proceeded to do this a couple more times before coming to a conclusion. "I can see now."

"O really?" She said giving him a suspicious look. It just got better after this weird windstorm?" She asked with a confused expression.

"I don't know how to explain it." He said trying to figure out the right words. Then he realized something. "Where is the computer?" He said now panicked.

"Where did you leave it?" Mia asked not really caring.

Jareth began frantically searching the apartment. Turning over furniture, looking into his drawers and even went to his room. He paused, now remembering what had happened before he had passed out. The computer was glowing, he thought. Then I remember it… entering me.

"Ok Jareth we have to go, it's fiftieth past six." Mia said as she went into their bedroom and got both of their suitcases. "Let's go before we get into trouble."

Jareth noticed a small blinking red light at the top right corner of his vision. He turned his head but soon realized that it followed, lingering in the corner of his vision. What is this? Jareth thought. Before he could think any more about it, there was a knock at the door.

"No no no," Mia said frantically. "We are going to be in trouble." She ran toward the door and opened it. Standing there was a tall man in a green military camo uniform, he had big muscles and was sternly looking at them. He had a name tag written above his chest that said, Robert.

Due to the war between the two species, every person that reached the age of 15 by June 10 was required to go to military school for three years. The humans were naturally still worried about the mention of the Lyracken god, just like the Evolved group, who saved the humans saying that their god was asleep on Earth. Jareth was born on June 28, 2004, and Mia was born on May 25, 2005. This means that Jareth and his sister will be going to the military school in the same year. Jareth will be one of the oldest and Mia being on the younger side. The current date is June 10, 2020. This is the date each year that kids will get picked up to go to the military school.

Even though the humans and the Lyracken are in a period of peace, every person knew that it won't last. Every so often, there would be news reports about one of them antagonizing the other. It felt like the war would start up again.

"Why aren't you downstairs?" Robert asked mildly annoyed. "It is time to go to military school. And here I thought you were attempting to evade your required service, but since you are still here, I don't think that is the case."

"We were trying to make sure that we got everything." Mia quickly answered.

"Where are your parents?" Robert asked.

Jareth and Mia did not respond to this question right away which was enough of a delay that the man knew the answer.

"I see," he said. "They died in the war. Well, let's go." He turned around and was about to walk out.

"Sir, may I go to the restroom?" Jareth asked.

"He turned around, "I'm not in a hurry but don't take too long."

"Thank you, sir," Jareth said as he ran into the bathroom and closed the door.

The truth was that Jareth did not actually need to use the restroom. All he wanted was to figure out what the blinking red light was. Now, what is that, he thought? He reached his hand out, trying to touch the dot. He thought it was in front of him.

Just then, a screen like a system interface popped up in front of his face.

"Agh!" Jareth gave out a soft outcry.

"Hey, what's going on in there?" The man asked.

"I agh…slipped," Jareth responded.

The man grunted and moved away from the door.

Jareth looked in the mirror, noticing that there was no reflection of the system screen on it. I guess it must be in my eyes, Jareth thought to himself.

A robotic voice began to speak. "User: Jareth Nightshade. Race: Human. Level 1. 0 of 25 exp (experience points). HP (Health Points): 10 of 10. Strength: 10 of 10. Stamina: 10 of 10. Agility: 10 of 10. Dexterity: 4 of 4. Blood Energy (B E) how much energy Jareth has: 30 of 30."

This is really overwhelming, Jareth thought. It's like some of the old video games that people would play before those boxes.

Jareth noticed the many tabs on the top of his "status" screen. He saw a skills tab, Draven shop, Quest tab, and many others that showed question marks. The status screen he was currently on had a side tab that said, "Draven properties are applied" with a little side message that says, "level up to unlock more."

"Who is this Draven?" Jareth whispered to himself.

Jareth for now, was ignoring that thought. He was thinking that he had never heard of a system from a computer that granted a power to a person. It also didn't look like an Evolved book. I have enough time to check the other tabs. He thought about the skills tab, and it switched over to it.

"Skills. No skills or skill points available. Skill one locked. Skill two locked."

Well, that's a shame. I'll look at this later he thought. I should have time. I guess I'll look at the Draven Shop tab and see what's there.

"Draven Shop. Shop unlocks at level 15."

Well, this is currently useless. Hopefully the Quest tab has something. He switched over to the quest tab.

"Main quest, reach level 5. Daily quest has been unlocked. Your body is growing, and you need fluids, drink 1 gallon of water before midnight each day. Reward per day of completion: 5 exp. New quest received: reach the military base with no problems. Reward: 5 exp."

His heart started to race. He was excited and wanted to test it to see what he could do, but unfortunately, it was time to go. He could hear the man walking toward the door. To avoid thinning the military man's patience, he flushed the toilet and began washing his hands. Jareth then exited the bathroom.

"Get your things," the man grunted. He turned and walked out of the apartment. Jareth and Mia quickly grabbed their corresponding suitcases and proceeded to exit after him. Jareth turned around and looked at the apartment that he had spent the last eight years of his life in. From this moment on, everything will change. He turned back around and proceeded to start dragging his heavy bag down the stairs. The surprising thing was that it actually wasn't as heavy as he thought it would have been. Both of the siblings were taking the stairs one at a time. It was just slow enough to get the attention of a certain someone.

"We are already behind," the military man said as he grabbed their suitcases and walked down the stairs. Jareth and Mia quickly followed.

Nine stories later and they reached the lobby. From there, Jareth could see a green camo military bus. It could fit around 46 people. They proceeded to walk out of the lobby and into the sun that was about to set. Once the sun touched his skin, he received a message from the "Draven System.

"You are in direct sunlight. Why are you standing in the sun, you know it hurts. All stats will be reduced by 25% while the sunlight touches your skin."

Right during the message, Jareth could feel somewhat weaker and sluggish. He felt like he had done some exercise and now was on a walk. He opened up the system to see everything that was reduced.

"HP: 7 of 7. Strength: 7 of 7. Stamina: 7 of 7. Agility: 7 of 7. Dexterity: 3 of 3. Note that Blood Energy will not be affected by the sunlight."

What kind of downside is this, Jareth thought?

***

Author's note: The reason why I said 7 of 7 using strength as an example is because there may be a gear that can increase your strength, and it's by 3 then it will be Strength: 10 of 7. Now back to the story.

"New daily quest received: stay out of sunlight for 10 hours. Reward per day of completion: 5 exp."

Jareth now was happy for this one. At least I can get exp for not suffering, Jareth thought. Mia, now noticing that her brother was falling slightly behind, turned to look at him.

"Are you ok?" She asked.

"Yes," Jareth replied.

"Why are you walking so slowly?" Robert asked. "The school will literally eat you alive if you keep this up."

The siblings looked at each other a little concerned by this comment. Jareth forced himself forward. They finally reached the bus, and the doors slid open. They got on and realized that only the first 2 rows were still opened. Jareth made sure that they sat right behind the bus driver because there was a cloth on the window. Robert then put down their two bags, and they placed them between their legs.

"You are no longer in direct sunlight; all stats have been returned to normal. Thanks for realizing your weakness noob," the system said.

Jareth could feel that his body was back to normal, and his strength had returned. Jareth was not sure whether he liked the DS (Draven System) comments. Looks like as long as I don't go into sunlight my stats will stay the same.

The students were chatting but stopped when Robert got on board. The bus moved on to their next destination. When they arrived, a single student was waiting where they should have been, unlike the siblings. There areas were nice unlike Jareth's apartment. This happened a couple more times before all the seats had become full. Every time a student tried to talk, Robert would look at them with his eyes glowing slightly orange. Jareth did not know what his Evolved power was.

"Now we can finally go to the Military campus," Robert said.

The bus started to speed up a little as they entered onto a highway. About five minutes later the bus driver along with Robert had put on a gas mask. That's when Jareth had received a new notification.

"A gas has been detected in the air. Attempting to resist. Oh no, you are getting sleepy. Resistance +1."

Jareth could feel his sister's head on his shoulder. He looked around to find that everybody else was asleep.

"Look what we have here," Robert said his voice slightly muffled from the mask on his face. "Someone who can resist the gas."

That's when Jareth could feel his own eyelids getting sleepy.

"Well," Robert chuckled. "You almost did."

Jareth's head went limp as he fell asleep.
