Chapter 4 - The Hunter

I am quite good at my job.

I am Lucia of the Halfmoon, and spiked flail, and axe spin around me with ease as I rip apart vampyr after vampyr.

I swing my axe, holding the spiked flail to my side. It glides across the air like a bug on water, then decapitates another vampyr.

I land on the ground and smell another vampyr quickly approaching. It's from my south, I pivot, tossing out the spiked flail towards vampyr.

Blood spills from its bottom half. I hear the rushed steps of humans running past me, and I turn towards the heavier stomping of a monster.

I let my breath catch and feel my soul burst with thrill. I spin the axe and jump upward.

I breathe in as I reach the apex of my jump and let out my breath as I release the axe. I feel it catch and slide through one of the beast's arms. I fall towards it, and the intensity of its blood-soaked visage attacks my nose.

Landing on the ground in front of it, I roll and dodge one of its limbs. I pivot again, and this time I throw out the spiked flail at where its head should be. I feel it's blood splatter on my face and hear its body fall.

I approach the body, I refuse to let the HE go to waste. I breathe in deep and knit my eyes as my soul reaches out and grabs the bright white energy quickly fading from the beast. I feel my body relax and then watch as my soul expands further.

Below it, I witness my pool of energy that has yet to be tapped.

I don't need it. My body is already beyond capable of fighting off the vampyrs. My brain flashes with the image of a spear coming towards me. I dodge out of the way and exit my soulscape.

Indeed, I hear the spear fly by, and so I turn towards the quickly approaching vampyr.

I can't smell any internal blood, so I know it is not a woman. I step back away from the sound and look in its general direction.

Feelings of desire and lust slam into my senses. Such a pitiful creature stands before me.

It speaks, "I must say, I have never seen such a curvaceous Hunter before. Where are you from?"

I don't reply, I know it's going to piss the vampyr off.

"No reply? That's okay, I understand. You see this? It's a mark meant for the top 100 best vampyrs in Diablo's crew."

"Only top 100? I don't think that's good enough to beat me."

"Bitch, what? You are weaker than my grandma was on her deathbed."

I nod sagely before whipping my axe towards its head. I hear it move out of the way with swiftness. This one might require a technique or two to defeat.

It dashes towards me, thrusting its spear at my head. I dodge it, seeing its attacks before it moves to make them. It does it again, and again, and again.

I drop to the floor and roll backwards, using my momentum to kick it in the jaw with my heel. Its jaw completely breaks, and I let a grin spread on my face.

While I can't steal most of my lover's techniques, there's one that I can, and its uses are infinite.

I breathe out as I come back upright, "Soul Weathering Technique..."

My entire weapon disappears from the enemy's sight. It transcends the realm of the physical, and I can see the vampyrs soul.

There are chains on it; it's under a lot of hierarchical agreements, it seems. Words slither upon the chains, and while I cannot read the agreements like Kojo, Michael, or my brother can, I don't need to.

I bear witness as my axe cuts through his very soul, and cut after cut, I can hear the physical body weakening to dust. One last groan escapes the vampyr, and my weapon returns to the physical world.

Its black dust of a body disappears with a push of the wind, and I stand there triumphant. I'm about to follow the crowd of people when I hear a scream.

I try to hear it better. It's approximately 0.6 miles away from my current location, so I pick up my weapon and begin running. I breathe in deep and hold my breath for five seconds.

I release my breath slowly and say, "Glittering Moon Technique..."

I feel the wind whip past my skin as a move towards the noise. I arrive almost instantaneously. Through the sounds around, I manage to make out the shape of the building.

I'm in a school, and the scream came from exactly fifty feet to my left. I turn around and breathe in the direction.

Three people. Two girls and a vampyr, but the vampyr is not attacking them. The vampyr was a girl, too.

I turn slightly and can make out the form of the deemon attacking them. It's got six limbs and two heads, and by its scent it's only a disease deemon.

"You two! Separate from the vampyr!"

"She's our friend! We can't leave her to die!"

I yell, "She's been bitten, idiots! She's not human."

I move towards them and block an attack from the deemon with the axe. I hear it's limb dissipates into dust. I stand ready in front of the girls.

"We can't leave her behind. She's our friend! We'll find a cure or something!"

I turn and grimace. They can't save her, she can't day walk, and if her biter is still alive, they will be able to control her. I tell them this, but they refuse to leave her behind.

The deemon is still in confusion about where its limb went, and so I sigh before explaining to them what to do.

"Tie her up, put something in her mouth to keep her from trying to bite you. Then stay behind me. I'll take you guys somewhere safe."

The vampyr is still unconscious since being bitten, and so they leave her there to rest. Vampirification should be almost instantaneous unless they are going to die, or they are going to be powerful. Her not having woken up worries me, so I keep it in the back of my mind.

I turn to the deemon and can sense it trying to give me a sickness. I breathe out the sickness and spin both the spiked flail and axe. My left foot moves behind me, my right in front.

My body fills with the coolness of my energy, "Vampiric Bloodline: Blood Moon Carving!"

With the utterance of the technique, my spiked flail and axe begin dripping blood, and I toss them both at the same time. All the deemon see's is two blood red blurs before it's turned into dead meat. I catch the chain, swinging both ends back towards me and letting them drop near the floor.

The satisfying plop of the deemons body reminds me to check in on the girls. I sit still, letting the sound of their feet tell me where they are. Three floors above, and they are grabbing something. I sit watching over their friend, who is increasingly twitching.

I pour some of my energy into her body, trying to reach her soul and reinforce it.

It works, but that will not stop her vampirification.

A few minutes later, her friends arrive with a rope. They tie her up, and I nod sagely as they fashion a rope around her mouth. I give them a moment to rest and spread my awareness out.

Everyone in a fifteen-mile radius is dead, and only deemons are near at hand anymore. Feeding on the corpses of humans vampyrs didn't feast on.

I know where Michael and my lover are headed, and so I simply wait for the kids.
