Chapter 1 - The World's Secret

It was just another normal afternoon of a normal day. Sun shining through the clouds, bright as ever.

The room though was brighter than normal. White paints on the wall and white tiles on the floor, two ceiling lamps brightening it up as if it wasn't already bright enough. It also had strange machines and tools all over the place.

In the centre of all of this was a bed and a chair just beside it. On the chair, there was a woman sitting with her legs crossed, reading a newspaper. On the bed was lying, a girl, somewhere like 14 years of age. Her black hair was a mess and her white skin was bruised all over, she wasn't bleeding but she was hurt. Her cute little face was dirty and her big eyes were closed. The girl was unconscious.

The girl slowly opened her eyes, flinching almost instantly at the bright light falling right on her face. She sat up. Suddenly she felt a sharp pain on the back of her head. She brought her right arm to the area that was hurting trying to figure out its exact location. Instant regret. It hurt to even touch that area. The girl then carefully turned her head to the left then slowly to the right noticing all the weird gadgets and tools around her. Her eyes widened, her heart was pounding loudly. This was not a place she knew. She then noticed the woman sitting on the chair beside her who was no longer reading a newspaper anymore.

The woman was a beautiful looking, bright and smooth skinned lady. Her long, dark brown hair was braided and was hanging on her right shoulder. She was wearing a pair of glasses. Behind those glasses were her calm, brown eyes which were looking right at the girl.

"Finally, I thought I had to sit here forever" the woman said in a calm and controlled tone.

The girl hesitated, then in a shaky voice, she said, "Wh-Where am I?, Who a-are you?".

The woman with an unreadable expression said, " Hospital.....Thank me for it."

The girl's breath hitched, she then tried to look around again, this time a little less hesitantly. The weird gadgets and tools she noticed earlier were actually hospital appliances. She was really in the hospital. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding in. She looked a little relieved.

Noticing the relief on the girl's face, the woman asked, "What's your name, cute one?"

"Sara...Sara Brooks" the girl said, still hesitantly.

"Wh-Why am I here? What happened to me?"the girl asked with a worried look on her face.

The woman's lips turned to form a faint smile, "You just went through the inhuman transformation, pretty crazy and chaotic one to be honest."

The girl flinched, her eyes narrowed, with a confused look on her face she said, "What does that mean?"

"This", just after saying that the woman stood up. Her eyes started glowing. Suddenly A subtle presence filled the room. The woman's body started to change, first she grew at least a foot and a half taller, then her clothes stretched at her arms, legs, chest and shoulders. The woman suddenly had grown muscular. Then her wrists and feet started cracking and turned into huge and sharp claws. Then finally from her back emerged two, beautiful wings covered with brown and white feathers.

Sara was terrified, she opened her mouth to scream her lungs out but was too scared to do so. Her breathing was as loud as ever, she violently started backing up using her pillow as a shield, her whole body was shaking. Her heart was beating so fast it could pop right out of her chest.

She finally mustered up some courage to speak, "Wh-Who.....What are you?"

"An inhuman, pretty cool aren't I?" the woman said with a smile on her face which hadn't changed a bit despite all that scary transformation.

Her response didn't help Sara in the slightest. Her expression didn't change a bit.

Noticing this she said, "Relax, I'm not a monster" she then looked at herself then again at Sara and said, "Uh.....I mean I might look like one but I am not I swear."

The woman then exhaled a long breath and simultaneously with that her body started shrinking, she got shorter, her muscles were now normal, her claws went back to being wrists and feet, her huge wings started shrinking and then went back inside her back.

"Seems like you have no idea about the concept of inhumans do you?" The woman said with a look of pity and a faint smile on her face.

Sara was still too scared. She hadn't processed a thing she witnessed till now.

The woman closed her eyes and let out a breath as if admitting defeat and then looked at Sara and started explaining, "Okay so don't freak out, there are humans, animals and.... people like me."

Sara doesn't speak.

"We are called inhumans, think of it as like.....uh.....Yeah! A mixture of humans and animals!."

The woman stretched her arm out which for a second turned into a sharp claw and then back to normal.

Sara's eyes widened, her heart was hammering against her chest at this point.

"See? We've got these strange powers and stuff"

"But this is the first time I've seen someone like you" Sara said with her voice shaking.

"That's because we live secretly among humans or in the inhuman residential islands."

The woman paused but then suddenly asked, "You've heard about those weird rumours and stuff about famous politicians and celebrities being aliens because they recorded scales or gills on their necks?"

"Y-Yeah.....what about it?" Sara hesitated "Are they I-Inhumans?"

"Well actually most of them are just either fake or edited or just a camera glitch. But a very small percentage ARE inhumans."

Sara wanted to speak but had no words

"We secretly live among humans in order to protect them. So you don't have to worry about getting hurt. Alright sweetheart?" The woman said with a caring smile on her face.

Sara listened to the whole thing but couldn't believe a word of it.

Inhumans? Animal bodies? Powers? Nothing made sense but somehow it also did.

Sara, now as careful as ever, with a slightly loud tone said, "Then why reveal this secret to me?"

The woman's smile widened, she said,"Oh, nothing really special but just because you are one of us now."

Sara shook, her breathing was louder now, her heart was beating even faster, she opened her mouth to say something but couldn't. But finally after a few seconds she spoke, "Wh-What do you mean? What did you do to me?"

"You remember the soda you drank this morning? The woman said with a calm expression on her face.

With that sentence, everything made sense now, a memory flashed in Sara's head. She was starving in the morning, so she opened the fridge where she found a soda can of a brand she had never seen before. She picked it up and drank from it without any hesitation. Then after a few seconds she felt a sharp pain in her chest after which she collapsed and that's it.

She couldn't remember what happened after she collapsed but she knew that whatever she drank from was not a good thing.

Sara looked up to the woman, tears flowing through her eyes, "Why do this to me?" she said while sobbing.

The woman's smile disappeared, replaced by a sad expression, she looked down trying to avoid eye contact with her and said, "It was your brother's will" she looked then looked up at Sara and said, "His final will... before he died".
