Of the dozen or so Paladins who had lived during Charlemagne's time, only six had descendants who were still alive. Two of these families were in Lorraine, three were in East Francia, and the remaining one was in West Francia. Besides the Grand Master accompanying Lina, Lorraine had another knight stationed at the border to defend against infidels, which explained why Lina had never met him. She had only heard that his combat abilities were astonishing and that the Pope had personally bestowed upon him the title of Protector of the Faith.
"Your Majesty, being watched so closely makes me feel rather... uncomfortable. Could you perhaps find a way to get him to leave?"
As they ventured deeper into the forest and the number of hunters around them gradually dwindled, Baptiste seized an opportunity to approach Lina and whisper in her ear. His expression was one of helplessness, as though he had no idea what to do about the situation.
