Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary: Chapter 1 - Tails and Trouble

The Living Room: 10:00 AM

The "Sanctuary" was a massive, sprawling manor hidden in a pocket dimension between a Starbucks and a dry cleaner. It had to be big, because Liam—a high-ranking Tengu—had a wingspan that could literally eclipse a small neighborhood.

"Louis! For the love of the Heavens, give it back!"

Liam was currently ducking his head to avoid hitting the vaulted ceiling, his massive, crow-black wings tucked tightly against his back. He was chasing a streak of silver lightning.

Louis, in his full Nine-Tailed Silver Fox form, was currently sprinting across the walls—yes, the walls—with Liam's favorite fountain pen clamped in his teeth. His nine tails were fluffed out like a giant, shimmering cloud, twitching with pure mischief.

Yip! Louis barked playfully, doing a backflip over a sofa and landing right on the head of a sleeping Harry.

Harry, a Werewolf who was currently in his "human-ish" form (which mostly meant he was just very tan, very curly, and wearing no shirt), didn't even wake up. He just let out a low, rumbling snore that shook the coffee table.

The Golden Peace

"Now, now, let's all take a deep breath, shall we?"

Niall trotted into the room. Unlike Louis's chaotic silver energy, Niall was a Golden Nine-Tailed Fox. His fur looked like it had been spun from autumn sunlight, and a faint smell of vanilla and warm bread followed him.

As Niall walked, a wave of "Calm" washed over the room. Liam's feathers smoothed down. Louis stopped mid-prank and sat on the rug, wagging his tails sheepishly.

"Louis, give Liam his pen," Niall said gently, his voice shifting into his human form as he sat on the floor. He was wearing an oversized yellow sweater and had a few golden fox ears poking through his blonde hair. "And Liam, stop trying to fly in the house. You know you always break the chandeliers."

"He started it!" Liam grumbled, retracting his wings until they vanished into his back.

The Reaper's Morning

"Could you all be quiet? Some of us are trying to catalog the departed."

Zayn, the Reaper, drifted into the room. He didn't walk; he floated an inch off the ground. He was wearing an all-black silk robe, and a translucent, ghostly ledger hovered in front of him. His skin was pale, and his eyes had a faint, ethereal glow.

"Zayn! Want a biscuit?" Niall asked, holding up a plate of cookies he'd clearly made with magic.

Zayn looked at the cookie, then at Niall's hopeful face. The Reaper sighed, his cold expression softening just a fraction. "Only if it doesn't have raisins, Niall. I deal with enough disappointment at work."

The "Mia" Factor

Suddenly, the front door opened. Mia walked in, carrying three bags of groceries and looking completely exhausted.

In a heartbeat, the house transformed.

Louis shifted into his human form—a handsome, blue-eyed boy with a mischievous smirk—and slid across the floor to grab the bags. "Mia! My favorite mortal! I did absolutely nothing wrong today!"

Harry woke up instantly, his ears (actual wolf ears) popping out of his curls as he sat up. "Mia! Food? Is there bacon?"

Niall trotted over in fox form, rubbing his soft golden fur against her shins, purring like a motorboat to take away her stress.

Liam stood up straight, looking like a protective general. "How was your day? Did anyone bother you? Do I need to go 'Sky-High' and intimidate your boss?"

Zayn simply closed his ledger and tilted his head. "Your soul looks tired, Mia. Sit. I shall make tea. And I shall make sure Louis doesn't put salt in it."

Mia looked at her five mythical roommates—the Tengu, the Reaper, the Wolf, and the two Fox brothers.

"I just wanted to buy milk," Mia laughed, reaching down to scratch Niall behind his golden ears. "Why is there silver glitter on the ceiling?"

"Louis," everyone (except Louis) said in unison.
