Chapter 12 - Chapter 2: Between Words

The moment their eyes met… everything slowed.

No sound.

No movement.

No disturbance.

For a brief instant, it felt as if time itself had paused to observe them.

Gaurav could not explain what he felt.

It was not shock.

It was not fear.

It was something quieter… yet deeper.

Familiar.

As if this moment had already happened somewhere… sometime… long ago.

Anzhu looked at him with the same calm expression, but her eyes held a depth he could not read.

Then suddenly—

A noise from the back benches broke the stillness.

Students shifted.

Someone laughed.

Chairs moved.

Time continued.

Both of them looked away almost at the same moment.

Gaurav blinked once.

Everything seemed normal again.

Too normal.

He did not understand what had just happened.

Was it just his imagination?

Or something else?

He did not ask.

And Anzhu did not say anything either.

The class continued like nothing unusual had occurred.

But somewhere inside his mind… a small question remained.

What was that?

The Calm Answer

After the academy closed for the day, students slowly began leaving the campus.

The sky had already started turning orange.

Evening wind moved gently through the trees near the academy gates.

Gaurav stood there, waiting.

He was not sure what exactly he wanted to say.

He just knew he did not want to leave without speaking to her properly.

A few minutes later, Anzhu walked toward the gate.

She noticed him immediately.

For a second, neither spoke.

Then she stopped in front of him.

"You disappeared," she said simply.

Gaurav smiled slightly.

"Long story."

"I assumed that."

They both began walking slowly along the road outside the academy.

At first, the conversation was normal.

Simple questions.

Simple answers.

How long had he been gone?

Why did he suddenly return?

Why did he look so tired in class?

Gaurav did not answer everything directly.

Not because he wanted to hide things…

but because some experiences were difficult to explain in words.

Instead, he focused on smaller topics.

Academy changes.

Teachers.

Students.

Daily life.

Surprisingly… he was the one talking more.

Normally, he was not someone who spoke continuously.

But today felt different.

Comfortable.

Peaceful.

At times, he even joked lightly.

Something he had not done in a very long time.

Anzhu listened quietly.

Sometimes she responded.

Sometimes she simply observed him.

There was a difference in him.

She could sense it.

But she did not interrupt the flow of the conversation.

They walked further than they had planned.

Time passed quickly.

For the first time since returning… Gaurav felt relaxed.

No pressure.

No danger.

No expectations.

Just… normal conversation.

Eventually, they reached a quiet area near the road.

The evening had become calmer.

Street sounds were fading.

Gaurav stopped walking.

He hesitated for a moment.

Then spoke.

"So… after everything…"

He paused briefly, searching for the right words.

"Best friends?"

The question was simple.

But the meaning behind it was not.

Anzhu looked at him for a moment.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Just thoughtful.

A small pause passed between them.

Then she replied calmly,

"Friends."

Her answer was soft… but clear.

Gaurav did not react immediately.

Then he smiled slightly.

"That works."

The conversation continued for a little while longer.

Lighter topics.

Small things.

Normal things.

And slowly, the distance created by time began to feel smaller.

The trip

The next morning, the academy atmosphere felt more energetic than usual.

Students were gathered in small groups, talking excitedly.

An announcement had been made.

The academy had organized a short fun and recreational tour.

Students were allowed to choose between two destinations.

The first location was Town of Fun, a popular recreational place where most students preferred to go.

The second location was a quieter place known as Our Home.

Unlike Town of Fun, this place was calm and less crowded.

Only a few students showed interest in visiting it.

When the options were announced, Gaurav did not think for long.

He chose Our Home.

A few moments later, Anzhu selected the same destination.

One of Anzhu's friends also decided to join them.

Most of the remaining students from their class selected Town of Fun.

As a result, only a small group was assigned to visit Our Home.

Interestingly, many of the students going there were younger children.

The environment already felt different.

Less noise.

Less excitement.

More calmness.

For Gaurav, this felt strangely comfortable.

Sometimes, peaceful places allow people to think clearly.

Sometimes, they allow people to simply exist… without pressure.

He did not know why… but he felt that going there was the right choice.

The trip was scheduled for the next day.

For now… things felt stable.

And after everything he had experienced…

stability felt rare.

To be continued…
