Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Unyielding Spirit Soul

"Come on, I'll take you to choose your spirit soul," Su Wuyan said cheerfully as the tense atmosphere faded.

"With your current spiritual power and physical strength, even absorbing a thousand-year spirit soul as your first one won't be a problem."

"A thousand-year spirit soul, huh…"

In the current era, the physical requirements for absorbing spirit souls were far less demanding than before; the key factor was spiritual power.

Spiritual power levels were divided into Spirit Origin Realm, Spirit Connection Realm, Spirit Sea Realm, Spirit Abyss Realm, Spirit Domain Realm, and finally the divine-level Divine Origin Realm.

With a spiritual power of 333, Su Qiu had already far surpassed the Spirit Origin Realm and reached the Spirit Connection Realm, more than sufficient to absorb a thousand-year spirit soul.

The moment they stepped out of the Awakening Chamber, a Spirit Master hurried over and asked hesitantly, "Your Excellency Dragon Sparrow, may I ask… what was that pillar of light just now?"

"Dragon Sparrow" was Su Wuyan's title.

"Oh, I just made a small breakthrough. Nothing important," Su Wuyan replied with a casual wave and an easygoing smile, sounding quite convincing.

"Ah… I apologize for disturbing you, Your Excellency." The Spirit Master let out a sigh of relief. He had thought something serious had happened. If it was the tower master causing the commotion, then it was hardly surprising. He never even considered the possibility of a martial soul awakening, after all, such a phenomenon had never occurred in all these years.

"No problem. Go on with your work."

After the Spirit Master left, Su Wuyan turned back with a grin. "Xiao Qiu, you don't mind me taking the spotlight for you, do you?"

"As long as you're happy," Su Qiu replied indifferently.

"I did it for your own good. Standing out too much isn't always a blessing," Su Wuyan said calmly. "If news of it reached the Tower Master, that would be even worse."

"You mean Qiangu Dongfeng?"

The only person Su Wuyan, a branch tower master, would refer to simply as "Tower Master" was Qiangu Dongfeng.

"That's right. Qiangu Dongfeng is not a good man," Su Wuyan said, narrowing his eyes, his tone turning cold. "Ordinary talents are fine, but anyone too exceptional will draw his suspicion. Either you become his dog, or he suppresses you."

"He's also been interfering in every department, grabbing power wherever he can."

Su Wuyan let out a snort. "He thinks he's the only one who knows how to scheme, treating everyone else like fools. In truth, we just can't be bothered to fight him for it. Sigh… the Spirit Pagoda will fall apart in his hands sooner or later."

"That's probably true," Su Qiu agreed. Though he had forgotten many details of the original story, he still remembered that Qiangu Dongfeng was hardly a good person.

"Come on. Today, your uncle's in charge, you can pick any spirit soul in this tower!"

What Su Wuyan did not say was that, over the past two years, he had noticed something troubling. While paying close attention to the issue of evil soul masters, he had discovered that the Spirit Pagoda's recent efforts against them had quietly weakened. Although official policies provided reasonable explanations, he still had a faint sense of unease.

Along the way, Su Qiu silently considered what kind of spirit soul he should choose.

For any Soul Master, the choice of spirit soul was of utmost importance. A single wrong decision could plant the seeds of future failure.

For Su Qiu, however, spirit souls might not be as crucial as others imagined.

He could sense that his Holy Sword and Holy Lance martial souls did not rely heavily on ordinary soul skills. They came with their own Noble Phantasm Releases. Those releases were his strongest offensive methods, their power tied directly to his cultivation level and the degree to which the Thirteen Restraints were unlocked.

As long as his cultivation level was not bottlenecked, that would be enough. Spirit souls and soul skills would at most determine his lower limit, not his upper limit.

Feeling the presence of both martial souls, Su Qiu hesitated between the Sword of Promised Victory and The Lance That Shines to the End of the World, unsure which to cultivate first.

Both the Holy Sword and the Holy Lance possessed thirteen restraints, the lance's restraints were even modeled after those of the sword.

"Let's cultivate the Sword of Promised Victory first."

Although the two weapons stood on the same conceptual level, their offensive power was not identical. The Holy Sword was specifically forged to destroy enemies, while the Holy Lance's primary function was to anchor the world itself. Naturally, its destructive capability was somewhat inferior.

"In that case, choosing a spirit soul becomes simple."

Su Qiu made his decision, he would prioritize spirit souls that granted enhancement-type soul skills.

Flashy offensive skills would not raise his upper limit, so strengthening his own attributes was the best option. Once his physical capabilities were enhanced, he only needed to act as the wielder of the Holy Sword and let it do the rest.

They arrived at a specialized white-metal chamber.

Opening the interface, Su Wuyan began searching through one spirit soul after another.

"Xiao Qiu, which martial soul are you cultivating first?"

"The Holy Sword."

"That sword, huh…" After a brief moment of thought, Su Wuyan selected a spirit soul.

It was a wolf-type soul beast. Its fur carried a deep blue-violet base color interwoven with delicate, radiant patterns that shimmered faintly like starlight.

"A 1,100-year Star Radiance Wolf. This is an extremely powerful light-attribute soul beast. Its formidable hunting instincts are so strong that it has abandoned the wolf species' usual pack behavior and lives alone."

Su Qiu listened, then asked, "Will it grant an enhancement-type soul skill?"

"Most likely not."

"Then no, no."

Su Wuyan switched to another soul beast. White scales covered its entire body like heavy armor, and its massive form caused the ground to tremble with every slight movement, it was clearly a mountain-dragon-type soul beast.

"White-Armored Mountain Dragon, 1,500 years."

"A dragon-type?" Su Qiu shook his head repeatedly before the explanation even finished. "No, no."

"Then how about this, Titan Giant Ape, one of the strongest strength-oriented soul beasts, balanced in both offense and defense, extremely powerful."

This one seemed excellent, yet somehow it still did not feel suitable. "No, no."

Su Wuyan finally lost his patience. "You brat! Not this, not that, what exactly are you thinking? These are already the best thousand-year spirit souls available in the East Sea City Spirit Pagoda."

"Uncle… is there a Spirit of Unyielding Will available?"

Now Su Qiu finally revealed his true intention.

His requirements for a spirit soul were not high. Enhancement-type skills were rare and hard to guarantee, so choosing an unyielding spirit soul was the safest option. In an era where bloodline superiority dominated, at least such a spirit soul would never retreat out of fear of a stronger lineage.

"An unyielding spirit soul?" Su Wuyan stared at him, countless thoughts flashing through his mind before he finally nodded firmly. "Alright!"

A massive soul beast projection appeared on the screen, its silhouette seeming to tear through the sky. With a wingspan exceeding ten meters, its body resembled that of an eagle but far more robust, its muscles tight as forged steel, bursting with explosive power.

"Sky-Rending Crying Eagle!"

"One of the dominant aerial soul beasts. This one has only about 1,200 years of cultivation."

"A hundred-thousand-year Sky-Rending Crying Eagle would truly blot out the sky itself. Unfortunately, in this era, that form can only appear through spirit souls. Ten thousand years ago, you might have seen its complete form in reality."

"Even with just a little over a thousand years of cultivation, it already possesses considerable intelligence. Taming it will be extremely difficult."

"I'll take this one."

At a single glance, Su Qiu had already made his decision. A spirit soul this majestic simply had to belong to him.
