Sunlight peeked through the blinds of my apartment, casting warm golden rays across the floor.
I stretched my arms over my head, letting out a long, satisfied groan as my spine popped in a series of satisfying cracks. I had gotten a full eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, a massive bowl of miso pork ramen the night before, and a hot shower. My mind was completely clear, the mental fatigue from yesterday's grueling dungeon dives entirely washed away.
I feel like a brand-new man, I thought, tossing the blankets off and swinging my legs over the side of the bed.
I held up my right hand, calling upon my chakra. Instantly, a violent, crackling yellow-black aura flared to life, dancing wildly across my fingertips.
The power radiating from it was intoxicating. At level 220, my personal stats were astronomical, but the real prize was the evolution of my [SHADOW ARMY]. I could feel their presence humming beneath my feet in the apartment's shadows. The yellow-black tier wasn't just a cosmetic upgrade; their baseline strength had skyrocketed. Every single lower-level Goblin and Ice Warrior now hit with greater speed and lethal precision, while heavy hitters like Beru and Rango were pushing into a tier of their own.
With only fifteen days left until the Finals, this power spike couldn't have come at a better time, I mused, clenching my fist and extinguishing the aura.
Before I started my day, I needed to check what was going on around the village. I closed my eyes and tapped into my [SHADOW LINK].
My consciousness splintered, giving me live visuals from the various Soldiers I had strategically tucked into the shadows of key players across the village.
First, I checked on my upcoming first-round opponent, Chigiri. I saw him going through a quiet, solitary weapons drill in a secluded training field. His movements were sharp, but he looked completely calm—blissfully unaware of the massive war that was just around the corner. In fact, it seemed that none of the other Kiri ninja knew about the upcoming invasion.
Next was Sasuke's opponent, the Iwa Genin, Gantetsu. The heavy-set stone shinobi wasn't training. Instead, he was discreetly walking the perimeter of Konoha's commercial district, his eyes lingering entirely too long on the village's infrastructure as he clearly searched for blind spots. When I checked in on one of my Soldier's memories from its time observing the other Iwa shinobi, I found that they were all doing the same thing, but in particular patterns to avoid looking too suspicious.
Still searching for structural weaknesses, huh? I noted. Iwa is definitely planning to capitalize on the chaos if they've been informed or gotten wind of it.
I seamlessly shifted perspectives to Ajisa, the Ame ninja who would be facing either Shikamaru or Temari in the second round.
It's probably going to be Temari, assuming Shikamaru forfeits the matchup just like in the main timeline, I mused.
She did individual training like the others, but what I found interesting was that some of the ninja on her team seemed to be attempting to eavesdrop on passing Leaf Chunin to gather intel. It took me a moment to realize that the "intel" they wanted was probably about me.
But as I observed Ajisa, I noticed a faint, almost imperceptible shift in the shadows on a nearby tree. A Leaf Anbu wearing a blank, featureless mask was perfectly concealed, tracking the Ame team's every move. And that's not all—there were various other Anbu tracking all other foreign shinobi movements.
So, Danzo's agents are discreetly monitoring the foreign Genin too, huh? I thought, a small, knowing smirk pulling at my lips. At least they're actively doing their jobs and securing our blind spots.
Finally, I bounced my connection over to the heavily guarded Anbu black-site ward.
Hayate was lying in a hospital bed, heavily bandaged but very much alive. Sitting in a chair right beside him, puffing thoughtfully on his pipe, was Hiruzen. From the heavy bags under his eyes and the stern grimace on his aged face, it was clear that Hayate had fully briefed him on the deeper works of the Sound and Sand's invasion plans.
I broke the connection, opening my eyes to the quiet of my apartment.
I stood up and gathered my things together. He'll probably brief the Jonin about more preparations soon. Which is good, because it means everything is flowing right on schedule.
I strapped my weapon pouches to my thighs and locked onto the chakra signature of a specific Shadow Soldier I had left deep within the most dangerous, secluded zone of the village.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: SHADOW EXCHANGE]
The room dissolved into a vortex of pitch-black darkness. A millisecond later, the humid, overgrown canopy of the Forest of Death greeted me. The ambient sounds of giant centipedes and predatory birds echoed in the distance, ensuring that absolutely no one would be wandering into this sector to interrupt me.
I reached into my [INVENTORY], and pulled out the [A-RANK CASTLE GATE KEY: CASTLE OF THE RED KNIGHT].
I bounced on my feet and loosened my shoulders. "Time to conquer a castle," I said, channeling my chakra directly into the key.
As my chakra flooded into the metal, the key floated out of my palm, hovering at eye level as it radiated a blinding, regal crimson light. The ambient hum of the Forest of Death was completely drowned out by a cascade of golden System notifications filling my vision.
[NOTICE: YOU ARE ATTEMPTING TO OPEN A CASTLE-TYPE DUNGEON.]
[CASTLE DUNGEONS ARE THE HIGHEST TIER OF PERMANENT STRUCTURES, DESIGNED WITH A HEAVY EMPHASIS ON ELITE GUARDS, COMPLEX FORTIFICATIONS, AND BOSS-TIER ENEMIES. AS THIS IS YOUR FIRST CASTLE-TYPE DUNGEON, PLEASE REVIEW THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT.]
Rules of engagement? I thought, raising an eyebrow. That's new, but awfully similar to when I started my first Tower-Type Dungeon. Let's see what we're working with.
[MECHANIC 1: THE RIGHT TO CHALLENGE]:
[THE LORD OF THE CASTLE RESIDES IN THE THRONE ROOM, WHICH IS SEALED BY MAGICAL WARDSTONES. YOU CANNOT SIMPLY RUSH TO THE FINAL ROOM. YOU MUST EXPLORE THE CASTLE, LOCATE THE DESIGNATED MINI-BOSSES, AND DEFEAT THEM TO SHATTER THE SEALS.]
[WARNING: EACH SHATTERED SEAL WILL ACTIVELY ALERT THE LORD OF THE CASTLE TO THE CHALLENGER'S PROGRESS.]
Oh-ho, I smirked, crossing my arms. So no speed-running straight to the boss. I actually have to earn my audience by dismantling their top lieutenants first. And the boss gets a live tracker of my kill count? I like it. It adds a little dramatic flair to the raid.
The screen scrolled down to the next rule.
[MECHANIC 2: TORCHES OF LIFE]:
[TORCHES OF LIFE ARE RARE, OPTIONAL ITEMS HIDDEN WITHIN CASTLES THAT ACT AS A REVIVAL MECHANIC. IF THE PLAYER IS DEFEATED BY THE LORD OF THE CASTLE, A TORCH WILL INSTANTLY RESURRECT THEM FOR ANOTHER ATTEMPT.]
[NOTE: TORCHES ONLY FUNCTION WITHIN THEIR RESPECTIVE CASTLES.]
[AVAILABLE TORCHES IN CURRENT CASTLE: 0]
"Yea, that's about right," I said, shaking my head. "Because it's my first, it gotta be on hard mode. Can't make this shit up."
The text shifted again, revealing the final mechanics.
[MECHANIC 3: GLOBAL EXPANSION]:
[SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETING 1 CASTLE WILL DYNAMICALLY UNLOCK 5 NEW CASTLE KEYS AS WELL AS WHEN THE PLAYER MAKES HIS TREK AROUND THE WORLD.]
[REWARD: SHADOW KING'S DOMAIN]:
[CASTLES ARE DESIGNED TO BE 'CONQUERED'. ONCE THE LORD OF THE CASTLE IS DEFEATED, THE ENTIRE STRUCTURE CAN BE CLAIMED AS A PERMANMENT BASE FOR THE PLAYER'S GROWING SHADOW ARMY, GRANTING THE NEW TITLE: SHADOW KING'S DOMAIN.]
[CASTLE MODELS WILL BE STORED IN THE PLAYER'S INVENTORY AND CAN BE DEPLOYED INTO THE REAL WORLD AS FULL-SCALE PHYSICAL STRONGHOLDS AT ANY TIME.]
[WHILE INSIDE A CLAIMED DOMAIN, THE PLAYER AND THEIR SHADOW ARMY WILL EXPERIENCE INSTANTANEOUS HP/CP RESTORATION, AND THE IMMEDIATE HEALING OF ALL PHYSICAL INJURIES AND AILMENTS.]
My jaw practically hit the forest floor.
I read the final prompt three times just to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.
A portable fortress... I thought, my mind racing a mile a minute. That acts like a Guild Hall?! Absolutely insane!
The strategic value of that was astronomical. If I ever needed a safe haven or a place to instantly recover my troops after a massive battle, I could just deploy the Castle.
My grip tightened, my blood pumping with an intense mix of adrenaline and greed. The stat boosts and the loot were great, but that [DOMAIN] reward? I was getting that Castle if I had to tear it down brick by brick.
The air above me warped as a colossal, dark-iron double door materialized high above the forest canopy. It floated down silently, and settled into the dirt.
The key shot forward, pressing directly onto the heavy iron lock. With a resounding, metallic clank, the massive doors swung inward, bleeding a deep, ominous crimson light into the canopy of the forest.
I cracked my knuckles, a fierce grin spreading across my face.
"Alright, now let's go conquer a castle," I said as I stepped through the doors.
The transition was instantaneous. One second I was breathing the humid air of the forest, and the next, a chill, dead wind washed over me.
The heavy iron doors slammed shut behind me, vanishing into thin air and leaving me stranded inside the [DOMAIN].
I looked up and my eyes widened.
Before me stood a massive, Gothic black-stone fortress. Towering spires pierced a pitch-black sky, while jagged iron fences and eerie gargoyle statues lined the outer walls. But the most striking feature was the sky itself—there were no stars, only a colossal crimson moon that cast a heavy, oppressive red glow over the entire stronghold.
What in the sweet Castlevania is going on here? I thought, looking around for an entryway.
I found one in the form of the massive, rusted iron gates of the outer courtyard. Raising a foot, I kicked the heavy iron open with a resounding screeeeeeech of protesting metal.
The moment my sandals touched the cobblestone courtyard, the dungeon reacted.
From the shadows of the courtyard pillars, four towering figures stepped into the crimson moonlight. They were heavily armored dark knights, standing easily at ten feet tall, encased entirely in spiked, blackened steel. Each of them dragged massive axe-clubs and claymores across the stone, scraping up trails of sparks.
[ENEMIES DETECTED: GOTHIC SENTINEL (A-RANK)]
Ooo, the appetizers, I just smirked, letting my shadow rapidly expand across the courtyard floor. Let's see how y'all handle guys.
"COME FORTH!" I commanded with a hand raised in the air.
The ground erupted.
A terrifying, suffocating pressure instantly flooded the courtyard as hundreds of my [SHADOW SOLDIERS] rose from the darkness.
Standing at the very front of the formation were my top Soldiers. Rango, wielding his spear with lethal grace; the Giant Red Tiger, its fangs bared and dripping with molten fire; the Armored Polar Bear, standing like an immovable furry tank; and the Lead Ice Warrior, gripping a massive, frost-covered battleaxe.
And hovering just above them, his insectoid wings buzzing with lethal anticipation, was Beru.
"My Liege," Beru rasped, his voice echoing with a dark, twisted delight as he stared at the approaching Sentinels. "These weaklings dare to block your path. Shall we engage?"
"Yes, clear the path for me," I ordered, my eyes locked on the massive wooden doors of the inner keep. "Don't hold back."
Beru let out a terrifying, ear-splitting screech. "SLAUGHTER THEM ALL!"
The fight quickly turned into a one-sided demolition.
The four Sentinels didn't even get to swing their weapons. My Giant Red Tiger was actually the first to lunge. It clamped its massive jaws around the torso of the nearest Sentinel and snapped its heavy iron armor like a dry twig. Rango blurred forward, his spear thrusts moving so fast they were practically invisible, turning the second knight into a metallic pincushion before it could even raise its shield.
The Polar Bear and the Ice Warrior completely bulldozed the third. The bear swatted the knight off its feet with a massive paw, and the Ice Warrior instantly froze the Sentinel solid before shattering it into a thousand icy pieces with a single, brutal axe swing.
As for the fourth? Beru simply descended upon it like a black missile. He ripped the Sentinel's helmet off with his bare claws and decapitated it in a spray of black, shadowy dust.
In less than five seconds, the courtyard was perfectly clear.
Yeaaaaaa, that's what I'm talking about! I thought, a massive grin spreading across my face as I walked past the scattered, dissolving armor of the Sentinels.
I stepped up to the grand entrance of the keep, my army falling into perfect, disciplined formation behind me.
I pushed the massive doors open, stepping into the belly of the beast.
The interior of the keep was massively disproportionate to how it looked from the outside.
It was a labyrinth of grand architecture. A pristine, blood-red carpet stretched down a hallway wide enough to fit a small house, illuminated by floating, spectral candelabras. Towering stained glass windows lined the walls, depicting grotesque scenes of demonic wars.
But we didn't get to admire the decor for long.
A deep, reverberating bell suddenly tolled from somewhere high up in the castle spires. The sound shook the very foundations of the keep.
[WARNING: THE CASTLE HAS BEEN MOBILIZED.]
"Here they come!" I shouted.
The doors at the far end of the hall burst open, and a tidal wave of enemies poured into the corridor.
It was a highly coordinated, terrifyingly balanced army. The frontline consisted of [SHIELD KNIGHTS (A-RANK)] carrying massive, chakra-absorbing shields. Behind them were [PHANTOM ARCHERS (A-RANK)], drawing back ethereal-like, glowing arrows. Mixed in the middle were colossal [CHAINED EXECUTIONERS (A-RANK)], dragging giant, blood-stained guillotines on chains. And floating safely in the backlines were the [BLOOD-PRIESTS (A-RANK)], chanting dark incantations that cast red, healing barriers over the others.
A volley of arrows rained down on us. I raised my arm to deflect, but the arrows didn't impact—they literally phased straight through the stone pillars and my Soldiers' weapons, only solidifying when they touched physical flesh or chakra.
No way! That's crazy! I thought, dodging a shot that clipped right through my cover.
"Break their lines!" I communicated telepathically to my army.
They surged forward like a tsunami of darkness.
My Armored Polar Bear led the charge, acting as a massive, immovable shield. It tanked the phasing arrows with pure, dense chakra, slamming into the Shield Knights and shattering their formation. My Giant Red Tiger leaped over the bear, unleashing a massive, roaring torrent of fire that engulfed the hallway.
Whenever an Executioner stepped up to swing its massive guillotine, my Ice Warrior Captain was there, freezing the chain mid-swing and cleaving the giant in half. Meanwhile, Rango had completely vanished using his [STEALTH], bypassing the frontline entirely to appear behind the Blood-Priests, assassinating the support casters before they could finish another round of their healing chants.
And Beru? Beru was a natural disaster, a blur of yellow and black tearing through the hordes with horrific, screeching delight.
As my army pushed the line forward, a sudden, chilling spike of [KILLING INTENT] flared directly behind my neck.
[MINI-BOSS DETECTED: SHADOW ASSASSIN (A-RANK)]
It had bypassed my entire army using its Invisibility skill. I caught the glint of a poisoned dagger out of the corner of my eye, aimed perfectly at my spine for a [CRITICAL STRIKE].
Oh, how sneaky, I smirked.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: SHISUI UCHIHA'S BODY FLICKER]
I vanished and left a perfect, physical afterimage of myself standing in place.
When the assassin's dagger plunged into the afterimage, its eyes widening in shock as the illusion dispersed into thin air.
I reappeared behind the rogue. "Almost had me, didn't ya?" I whispered directly into its ear, before I drove my [IVORY SHORTSWORD] straight through its neck, decapitating it in a single, fluid motion.

A deep, echoing CRACK reverberated through the castle walls as the first magical seal broke.
"Keep pushing!" I communicated to them telepathically, equipping the cloak as my army stormed up the grand staircase.
We breached the second-floor central hall. Waiting for us in the center of the massive, vaulted room was the second target.
[MINI-BOSS DETECTED: ARCANE BATTLEMAGE (A-RANK)]
It was a floating, skeletal lich draped in tattered purple robes. The moment we entered, the gravity in the room exponentially multiplied. Several of my low-level Soldiers were flattened against the marble floor as the Battlemage began chanting, weaving a massive, apocalyptic circle of fire magic above its head.
"My King!" Beru screeched through our mental link from the ceiling, completely unaffected by the gravity. "May I consume this one?!"
"Eat up!" I grinned.
Beru dove like a dark meteor. Before the Battlemage could even release its spell, the Ant King slammed into it, his claws shredding through its magical barriers like wet paper. Beru ripped the lich's skull from its shoulders, unhinged his jaw, and devoured the glowing chakra core whole.
In an instant, Beru's body started convulsing, until a burst of deep red flames erupted from the insectoid's wings.
His [GLUTTONY] trait must have permanently absorbed the mage's fire affinity, I thought as another notification appeared in front of me. How fortunate.

Those jutsu scrolls are top-tier, I noted, my eyes lighting up as I stored them.
The final stretch was a long, narrow bridge connecting to the castle's highest spire. Massive doors of what I assumed was the Throne Room loomed at the far end.
But blocking the bridge was the final guardian.
[MINI-BOSS DETECTED: BEAST CHAMPION (A-RANK)]
It was a hulking knight encased in spiked, heavy armor, riding atop a spectral, blue-flamed wolf the size of a battle tank.
Goodness gracious, I thought. The Lord of this Castle really isn't trying to waste time on second-rate challengers.
The Champion lowered its massive lance and charged down the bridge. The spectral wolf's paws didn't even touch the stone; it practically glided through the air, closing the distance in a heartbeat.
I stepped ahead of my army, raising my right hand.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: RASENGAN (MEDIUM OUTPUT)]
Chakra violently spiraled into my palm, compressing into a dense, howling sphere of yellow energy.
"Beru, the dog is yours!" I shouted, sprinting directly at the charging cavalry.
[SKILL ACTIVATED: SPRINT (MEDIUM OUTPUT)]
Right as the Champion thrust its lance at my chest, I dropped into a slide, slipping cleanly under the weapon. I popped up on the rider's flank and slammed the [RASENGAN] directly into the knight's heavy breastplate.
The grinding, rotational force of the jutsu instantly tore through the armor, blasting the Champion right off its mount and spiraling it off the bridge to its death.
At the exact same moment, Beru swooped down, his newly acquired flaming wings trailing behind him, and completely tackled the spectral wolf. He tore into the beast with savage delight, consuming its spectral energy for yet another stat boost.

The magical [WARDSTONES] adorning the Throne Room doors instantly dissolved into golden light. The massive doors slowly creaked inward, revealing a pitch-black interior.
I paused, holding up a hand to halt my army. The endless hordes of lower-level enemies were still pouring into the lower levels of the keep, desperate to reach us.
"Hold this chokepoint and farm up for your promotions, while I deal with the boss," I commanded, looking back at Rango, Beru, and the rest of my army. "Do not let a single monster cross this bridge."
The shadows bowed in unison, turning their weapons toward the encroaching horde.
If the Lord of the Castle is calling me, it's only right that I answer it solo, I mused, drawing my [IVORY SHORTSWORD] as I stepped into the pitch-black Throne Room alone.
