Chapter 31 - Morning Routine

Allan woke up surprisingly refreshed, as no nightmares or visions hunted his dreams. He didn't know how to feel about it, he had been seeing visions and dream of things that would have haunted many for years in the past month. It was as if his head had been suddenly cleansed from the horrors of his imagination.

As every normal teenager, he tried to fight sleep for as long as he could and stay lying in bed; unfortunately for him, the light coming through his window didn't agree. Not only that, but a very annoying figure was also pestering him to wake up.

Nythar was standing at the end of his bed, his arms crossed as he shook his head in disapproval of his descendant's lack of drive.

"Good morning sunshine! It's time to wake up"

Allan covered his body fully with his blanket, his voice sounding a little groggy.

"Ugh, just five more minutes, man… actually, make it ten," he said.

Nythar simply grabbed the end of the blanket and yanked it; making sure to move Allan as much as possible to wake him up.

"Nope, this is part of your training kid; you need to be able to wake up at a moments notice without much struggle." He said as he took Allan's arm and threw him out of bed. "You also need to take advantage of the morning and start your physical training."

Allan, who had landed face first on the floor, stood up and glared at Nythar with a very furious expression.

"Don't look at me like that, we've been over this already. You need to start training your body more intensely if you actually want to awaken."

Allan raised an eyebrow at that and simply let out a deep breath.

The clock on his stand read, Tues, 4:00 am.

A whole month has passed since the attack, and since Nythar revealed his true identity. Ever since then, Nythar has been making him wake up this early in the morning in order to train his body with a series of calisthenic workouts. Time passed as usual, and school continued as normal as well, and the day of the senior year students awakening was approaching, in fact it was in three days.

Normally, it wouldn't be something that should have concerned him, but Nythar had told him that he could also benefit from it. Everyone knew that the Veil weakened during each awakening year, which was why preemptive measures were taken to prevent a rift from opening. That was one of the reasons that all officials were taken by surprise when the attacked happened. With all measures in place, no one had even considered a Voranth to be so brazen as to attack on that day. This made it clear to officials, especially Garrick, that there was a hidden agenda they were unaware about.

For some reason, ever since the advent of the Guardians, every four years marked the time when the world's consciousness came to life and tested people to see if they had what it takes to awaken. Nobody knew for certain why it happened every four years, as the only ones who knew for certain were the Guardians, and they refused to give out that information.

That led to an issue this year. Since the actual date of awakening had been interrupted by the attack and assassination of the two principals, the senior students of East Gate High and all other institutions within New Chicago had missed the opportunity to awaken. This resulted in top government officials to request the involvement of a Guardian to influence the world into agreeing to test potential awakeners within a month's time frame.

Needless to say, the request wasn't easy to make. Officials had to take many steps for their request to even reach the council. The world's council worked closely with the Guardians, as they were the only connection that humans had with the world's consciousness. Unlike what common folk believed, the world mainly stayed out of human affairs. The only time it became active was during the time of the awakening process around the world.

The only beings that could stir the world's consciousness awake were the Guardians.

Originally, the plan had been to resume the awakening process within a week, but officials had to take all those steps once they realized that no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't get the world to start the process.

Garrick Veyne wasn't famous only in New Chicago; his reputation had actually reached the ears of the council and many other world powers. He had been the one who had requested the involvement of a Guardian for them, along with the Mayor, of course.

Despite this, the council had told them both that the Guardians were not agents that could be requested whenever they needed, so the request had been considered a failure, but to everyone's surprise, a Guardian had actually agreed to their request; even though Guardians worked with the council, they did took orders from anyone. Not even the council's chairman, the strongest human alive, could make them move if they didn't want to.

They existed in a different realm of power, after all.

The Guardian's agreement came as a surprise to everyone, including the council. They had even questioned him about his involvement in what they considered to be a trivial matter, but the Guardian did not elaborate or offer any explanation for his decision. The council had questioned him not because they doubted his decision, but because it would set a precedent in which many countries would request the involvement of the Guardians in many minor issues that may occurred in the future, which was going to be a pain to deal with, but what could they do? This was a Guardian, after all; no one could force them to do or not do anything.

"You'll see when the day comes; you will be years ahead of everyone else," Nythar said in an excited tone.

Allan had just finished his first set of one hundred push-ups. Honestly, if he didn't know better than to pointlessly look into the darkness that covered his face, he could swear that Nythar was actually smirking at him.
