Chapter 232 - Chapter 232: Champions Lift the Trophy! Puyol's Last Dance! The Domestic Season Ends!

Villarreal arrived at Camp Nou with no intention of playing the role of polite guests.

Giovani dos Santos, exactly as Inés had warned on the broadcast, played with fire against his former club. In the 12th minute, he picked up a sharp pass on the edge of the area, spun around Mascherano with a quick drop of his shoulder, and forced Víctor Valdés into a low, sprawling save at his near post. Villarreal stayed disciplined, compact in their lines, and completely uninterested in letting Barcelona turn the match into an easy stroll.

Even so, Barcelona struck first.

In the 19th minute, Messi and Neymar worked a quick combination down the right channel. Neymar drove toward the byline before cutting a low pass back across the six-yard box, where Lorenzo met it with a clean, sweeping finish into the bottom corner. It was his sixty-third league goal of an unbelievable campaign. The stands erupted, and the afternoon party looked well underway.

1-0.

Villarreal answered back in the 34th minute. Giovani dos Santos found space on the break after a loose pass in midfield, driving into the box and burying a crisp shot past Valdés into the far side of the net. Out of respect for the supporters who had once cheered him as a teenager, he kept his celebration muted with raised hands, though the Villarreal bench jumped in celebration.

1-1.

The equalizer did not dampen the mood in the stands. The championship was already locked up, and while keeping the unbeaten streak alive mattered, the crowd was far more invested in the emotion of the day.

At the break, the fourth official held up the board for the substitution everyone had been waiting for.

Javier Mascherano walked off, and Carles Puyol jogged onto the pitch for his final forty-five minutes at Camp Nou.

Xavi met him right at the halfway line to hand over the captain's armband, fastening it onto his bicep with a grin. The entire stadium rose to its feet for a sustained standing ovation, with the Villarreal players joining in the applause. Puyol raised both hands to acknowledge the four corners of the ground, took a deep breath, and slotted straight into central defense alongside Piqué.

"Carles Puyol takes the pitch for the final time in front of his home fans," Santiago said warmly from the booth. "Forty-five minutes to say goodbye to the ground he has led for fifteen incredible seasons."

Barcelona took complete control of the second half.

With Puyol organizing the defensive line, Barcelona pushed forward to secure the win and protect their undefeated record. Neymar rattled the post with a curling effort in the 58th minute, and Messi forced Sergio Asenjo into a diving save with a stinging strike just past the hour mark.

Lorenzo was approaching his planned sixty-minute mark on the pitch. Martino held off making the change for a couple of extra minutes, keeping him on as Barcelona won a corner on the right side.

The breakthrough came in the 66th minute.

Xavi stepped up and delivered a trademark inswinging corner. The ball flew over the first defender and dropped perfectly near the penalty spot. Lorenzo timed his run between two yellow shirts, jumped with perfect momentum, and powered a downward header toward the bottom left corner. Asenjo reacted quickly, but the velocity and bounce carried the ball straight into the side netting.

2-1.

Camp Nou roared with delight. Lorenzo sprinted toward the corner flag near where Cecilia and Lucia were sitting. Spotting both of them on their feet cheering, he gave a quick, knowing point toward their row with a smile before Neymar and Alves jumped onto his back to celebrate.

"LORENZO....!" Santiago shouted into his headset. "A commanding header to restore the lead! He delivers yet another decisive moment in front of the home crowd, and Barcelona's unbeaten season remains firmly on track!"

Two minutes later, Martino made the planned substitution. Lorenzo walked off to a warm standing ovation, tapped hands with his manager, and took a seat on the bench.

Sofía, who had been watching from the dugout, walked over to him. She glanced down at her stopwatch and raised an eyebrow. "Somehow you never manage to stick to the limit I give you. You still squeezed in eight extra minutes out there today."

Lorenzo reached for a sports drink with a small grin. "Come on, the game was stuck at 1-1. We needed that goal to keep the streak going."

"You always seem to have a convenient reason and an answer ready to go, don't you?" she replied, her expression softening into a rare, genuine smile. "Though I have to admit, it was a fantastic header. Now sit back, keep your legs warm, and actually rest. The Champions League final is only a couple of weeks away."

The final whistle sounded shortly after, confirming the 2-1 victory. Barcelona had kept their unbeaten record intact with just one away fixture left in the league calendar. The match itself, however, was merely the prologue for what came next.

The trophy presentation got underway twenty minutes after the pitch cleared.

A celebration stage had been set up right in front of the main presidential box, with the polished silver La Liga trophy resting on a central pedestal under the bright stadium floodlights. The squad changed into yellow championship shirts reading Campions de Lliga. Families and children ran out onto the grass, confetti cannons were loaded along the touchline, and ninety-five thousand supporters held their commemorative scarves high in the air.

When it came time to step up and claim the trophy, the entire squad stepped back and pointed toward one man.

Carles Puyol.

The players pushed their captain forward. Xavi gave him an encouraging pat on the shoulder, while Messi stood beside him with an appreciative grin. Puyol tried to wave it off at first, gesturing for Xavi and Iniesta to come up with him, but his teammates flatly refused to take no for an answer. This was his farewell, and the moment belonged entirely to him.

He walked slowly to the pedestal and placed both hands on the cool silver handles. He looked out over the massive bowl of Camp Nou, listening to ninety-five thousand people chanting his name in unison, and the tough composure that had defined his entire career finally broke. He looked down for a second, wiping a tear from his cheek.

Then he lifted the heavy trophy into the night sky.

Camp Nou erupted in sheer euphoria. Golden confetti blasted into the air, raining down over the stage as the squad mobbed their longtime captain with joyful shouts. Puyol held the trophy high with tears openly streaming down his face, smiling as broadly as he ever had.

He passed the trophy along to Xavi, who raised it to another roar before handing it to Iniesta. From Iniesta it went to Messi, then to Neymar, and finally Neymar turned around and handed the heavy silver cup straight to Lorenzo.

Lorenzo took the handles firmly in his hands. At seventeen years old, in his debut season with the senior squad, he had stacked up a historic campaign: over a hundred goals across all competitions, a Copa del Rey, a Super Cup, an international youth title, and now an undefeated Spanish league championship. He lifted the trophy high above his head to a thunderous cheer from the crowd.

Looking toward the lower tier, he spotted Cecilia and Lucia cheering at the top of their lungs. He raised the trophy slightly in their direction, sharing a quiet, appreciative nod that only the three of them understood.

Before he could lower his arms, Neymar pulled him into a headlock while Busquets emptied an entire bucket of chilled water right over their heads, sending both of them laughing into the middle of the celebration.

Later on, after the confetti had settled, the pitch had quieted down, and the supporters began filing out into the streets of Barcelona, the team gathered at the center circle for their official championship photo.

Puyol sat proudly in the middle with the trophy between his knees, flanked by the teammates he had fought alongside for years.

Lorenzo took his spot standing between Messi and Neymar, exactly where he had belonged all season long.

The trophy lift and the wild celebrations were finally wrapped up. Only a single, inconsequential away match remained on the domestic calendar, and the Champions League final in Lisbon was now just two weeks away.
