Chapter 228 - Chapter 228: The Forged and the Fallen

Gen's scream was raw, tearing from a throat still clogged with sand and blood. "KAITO!"

But it was too late.

Buqu had moved. His axe, the physical manifestation of **Forged Destiny**, cleaved downward. It didn't cut through the air; it severed the concept of space and time in its path. A jagged, black tear followed the blade's arc, a wound in the world itself.

Kaito tried. His **Walking Star Jingdao** flickered desperately over his skin, the hard light wavering like a guttering candle in a gale. But he could not move. He was paralyzed—not just by the physical pressure, which felt like the weight of a continent, but by the spiritual certainty of the blow. This strike was fated. It *would* land.

Just as the shimmering edge touched the hair on Kaito's forehead, a figure blurred, a streak of desperate motion.

*THWUMP.*

Master Ting crashed into Kaito, wrapping his good arm around the younger man's chest and hauling him sideways with a brutal, twisting jerk.

The axe continued down.

It did not strike stone. It did not explode. It *passed through* the mountaintop.

A deep, subsonic *thrum* vibrated through the entire Lost Triangle range. Then, with a sound like the earth sighing in final relief, a perfect, impossibly deep trench sliced across the mountain's heart. The peak did not crumble; it was *separated*. One half of the ancient sanctuary slid from the other with a slow, grinding groan, sheared as cleanly as if by a god's razor.

As the dust plume rose in a silent, expanding wall, Gen's gut-wrenching cry was lost in the cataclysm. He tried to lunge forward, but his body rebelled. The damage from **Forged Destiny** was not just physical; it was a spiritual anchor, a declaration of his defeat that still weighed his limbs like lead. He only managed to stumble into the air with Lorel's frantic support.

In the clearing sky above the devastation, the scene resolved.

Master Ting hovered a dozen meters away, Kaito's limp form held tightly in his right arm. The save had a cost.

Ting's left arm was gone from the elbow down. Not severed cleanly, but *unmade*, as if the space his arm had occupied was simply erased by the axe's passing. No blood spurted; the wound was a seared, blackened void, weeping a thick, smoky vapor of disintegrated Qi and essence. His face was parchment-white, beaded with cold sweat.

"MASTER TING!" Li Fen and Lorel screamed in unison, their voices cracking. "You need to stop the bleeding!"

The Lost Triangle, floating amid her two remaining orbs, stared. Her face was an emotionless mask of light. But deep within the vast, frozen ocean of her will, something infinitesimal shifted. A single, microscopic current of disturbance.

Ting, despite the horrific wound, wore a bright, terrible smile. It was the smile of a man who had seen the end of his path and found it acceptable. He pushed Kaito's body toward Li Fen and Lorel with a surge of **Shidao**, sending the unconscious man gliding safely into their waiting arms. His voice, when it came, was thin but steady. "Do not worry about me. I will be fine."

Buqu's expression never shifted. His focus, absolute and predatory, snapped back to the Lost Triangle, who had begun to fuse with the second orb. The outcome of this fight would be decided in the next few seconds. Everyone knew it—Gen, Lorel, Li Fen, the Lost Triangle, Ting, and Buqu himself. Their hearts hammered in a silent, terrified symphony.

They exchanged a final, wordless stare across the broken sky.

Ting made the first move.

At the same instant, Buqu and the Lost Triangle moved as well.

Ting's remaining hand came up, his index finger pointing not at Buqu, but at the space between Buqu and the Lost Triangle. His finger did not glow; it *dimmed*, drawing all light, all energy, into its tip. He was not casting the **End of the World Finger**. He was *becoming* it.

Back in the Jade Palace, the Jade Emperor had touched the end of the world by compressing **Jingdao** to a level Ting could never comprehend. Ting had spent a lifetime trying and failing to reach that apex. So he found another path. If he could not touch the end, he would *embody* it. He would make his own vanishing the point of annihilation.

The moment Buqu felt Ting's suicidal intent, a slight frown of annoyance crossed his face. A threat on both fronts. The Lost Triangle's descending form still needed a few more seconds to complete her casting. He would not give them.

His figure turned into a beam of blue-white light, the axe of **Forged Destiny** raised high for a final, cleaving strike aimed at the heart of the converging luminescence.

The Lost Triangle did not move. Not to evade, not to flee. If she was to die, she would die here. Otherwise, Buqu would. It was that simple. No emotion, no complex thought.

Just as the axe descended, Ting's figure intersected from the side.

His finger, now a point of absolute, hungry darkness, met the shimmering, fate-wrought metal of **Forged Destiny**.

The clash was brief. It lasted less than a millisecond.

But for Gen and the others watching, it was an eternity. They saw not a collision, but a silent, horrifying consumption—the end of a world meeting a destiny that refused to end, two impossible principles devouring each other in a standstill of absolute contradiction.

It was a single second, bought with a soul.

Buqu's axe sheared through the disintegrating figure of Ting.

At the same exact moment, the Lost Triangle's attack—the fusion of her being with the second and final orb—landed on Buqu.

The three forces—Forged Destiny, the End of a Master, and the Lost Principle—consumed each other in a final, silent detonation of white.

Then, the sound caught up.

***BOOOOOOM—***

The wave of Qi was not heat or light, but pure, concussive *unmaking*. It hit Gen, Lorel, Li Fen, and Kaito like a physical wall. The air in their lungs was hammered out. Their bones sang with resonant pain. The sand of the desert below rose in a spinning, kilometers-wide storm, blasted upward as if the sky had slapped the earth.

Gen, gritting his teeth against the roar, lifted his head. Through the storm of light and sand, he saw the dissolving figures.

It was hard to make out details, but he could *feel* it. Master Ting was disappearing. His form was turning into beams of fleeing light, his very essence unraveling.

As his figure faded completely, a whisper, carried on a dying thread of will, reached the Lost Triangle. *"At least… I could move you… at the end."*

The woman, impassible from start to near-finish, finally flinched.

Her story with Ting was too complicated, too burdened with old regrets and silent respect to ever be spoken. She had not wanted him on this mountain for this exact reason. But after Li Fen had proposed to learn her art… she had given in. *Why had she been so stupid?* Now, she wavered.

"Foolishness," she thought, the word a crack in her glacial will. "You haven't changed, Ti…"

"Ti." It was a name she had never used, not since the incident that had driven them apart centuries ago. But now, it was there again.

Ting's smile, visible only as a final curve of dissolving light, only grew. He clamped his vanishing essence onto Buqu's struggling form, a final, spiritual anchor. "End this now," his fading will commanded.

Even if he died today, he was glad. Gen, Li Fen, Kaito… they had all already surpassed him in their own right. He had nothing more to teach, nothing more to regret. His smile faded as he was utterly consumed, his existence spent to bind Buqu for one last, critical moment.

The Lost Triangle raised her palm for the final release.

But her heart hesitated.

A moment of hesitation. Less than a second.

The final beam of the Lost Principle, meant to be a single, annihilating point, spread out, diffused by that fractional doubt.

The resulting explosion sent two figures skidding down from the sky in opposite directions, trailing smoke and dying light.

One was the Lost Triangle, her luminous form extinguished, falling like a spent star.

The other was Buqu, his divine general's armor completely shattered into fading motes of celestial metal, his body a bloody, broken mess.

They landed with two heavy, final ***THUDS*** on the sand, leagues apart, and did not move.

"NO!" Gen's tears were hot and unchecked now. He ripped himself from Lorel's support, his body screaming in protest but answering his desperate call. He shot towards the Lost Triangle's impact crater, Lorel and Li Fen right behind him, the still-unconscious Kaito floating between them.

They reached her. Gen slid to his knees, carefully lifting her head onto his lap. Her silver-streaked hair was matted with sand and golden-tinged blood. Her white eyes were closed.

"Master!" Lorel cried, her hands fluttering, afraid to touch.

Li Fen's tear-filled gaze flicked to Kaito on her back, who stirred slightly, still unconscious but somehow feeling the profound loss in the air.

The Lost Triangle coughed twice, a weak, wet sound. Her eyes fluttered open, the milky white now dim. The stern expression was gone, leaving only a profound, weary exhaustion. "I have failed you all," she whispered.

Lorel and Li Fen shook their heads violently. "No, Master!" Lorel insisted. "We were the ones who misjudged you!"

"Master is someone worth fighting for," Li Fen choked out. "You cannot die today!"

Gen leaned closer, his voice thick. "They are right. You can't give up. Not now. Not after Master Ting's sacrifice."

She looked at them, a faint, sad understanding in her dim eyes. "I tried my best… but still failed. It seems Jiang was right back then. I was always… too emotional."

Gen's heart ached. "It's not," he said, the words coming from a place deeper than strategy, deeper than cultivation. "Without any emotion… is life even worth living? Without the pain or the joy it brings… where is the zeal to keep moving forward?" He spoke from his own raw experience—the loneliness, the love found, the frustration, the fear. Life had never had more meaning than in this moment, holding together the broken pieces of those he cared for.

The Lost Triangle fell silent for a long moment. Then she said, "It is time for me to rest. Let me try to recover."

Gen wiped the tears from his face with a rough hand and nodded. He placed her gently on the ground. The others wept, but a fragile, desperate hope flickered in their chests.

*Had they done it? Had they defeated another Divine General?*

Gen looked up at the sky. High above, one of the seven Damocles swords—the one corresponding to Buqu's domain—trembled violently. Its cruel light flickered, dimmed, and for a heart-stopping moment, seemed about to wink out of existence.

But at the last possible second, it steadied. It did not vanish. It remained, fixed in the heavens, its light merely dulled.

Gen's heart skipped a beat.

From the opposite crater, miles away, a wave of terrifying Qi erupted. It was not the ordered might of before, but a raw, ragged, furious power.

A figure rose from the dust like a zombie clawing its way from a grave.

**Forged Destiny**, now dulled to an iron-grey, solid and real as mountain bedrock, was planted in the sand before him. Buqu stood, bleeding heavily from his chest and face, his divine armor gone, his divine robes in tatters. He placed his right hand on the weapon's haft.

His voice, when it came, was a grating, bloody roar that echoed across the desert. "I HAVE NEVER BEEN DEFEATED! NOT BECAUSE I AM THE STRONGEST OF THE DIVINE GENERALS! NO! IT IS BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS FORGED MY DESTINY! I HAVE ALWAYS DECIDED MY FATE!"

He pulled the axe upward.

***COME TO ME! FORGED DESTINY!***

The weapon exploded with a final, terrifying surge of power. The clouds in the sky, what few remained, gathered and churned, turning the air heavy. It began to rain in the desert—a cold, mournful drizzle that mixed with the blood and sand.

The axe lost its shimmering, ethereal quality. It became solid, real—a weapon of golden iron, its runes now scars upon its surface. This was no longer a Domain Spell given form. This was **Forged Destiny** incarnate, the unbreakable will of a soldier who refused to fall.

The Lost Triangle's eyes shot open. With the last of her strength, she gasped, "Gen… lead him… into the portal." Her head lolled back, consciousness fleeing.

At the same moment, Buqu launched himself from his crater. He shot toward Gen and the others, the real **Forged Destiny** held high, a promise of absolute finality in his blazing eyes.

Gen shot up. He didn't think. He acted.

With a violent sweep of **Shidao**, he manipulated the air around Lorel, Li Fen, and Kaito, propelling them in three different, safe directions away from the line of charge.

"GEN, DON'T!" Lorel screamed.

"YOU PROMISED NOT TO FIGHT ALONE ANYMORE!" Li Fen shouted, her voice breaking.

Behind Gen, the air ripped open. A black, swirling portal yawned into existence, a void of pure negation—the last gift of the Lost Triangle.

Buqu was upon him, the axe descending.

Gen did not block. He did not dodge.

He met the charge head-on. As the axe fell, he grabbed onto Buqu's armored wrist with both hands, not to stop the blow, but to *hold on*.

Momentum carried them both forward, over the edge of the portal's maw.

As the darkness swallowed them, Gen's final words echoed back to his friends, carried on a thread of unwavering will.

"I AM NOT ALONE, MY FRIENDS… YOU ARE WITH ME. IN MY HEART."

Then, they were gone. The portal snapped shut with a sound like a closing tomb.

Silence fell, broken only by the soft, mournful rain and the ragged breaths of the survivors. The shattered mountain, the broken teacher, and the vanished hero were all that remained under the flickering, unforgiving light of the Damocles.
