The father paused briefly, giving One a moment to absorb everything he had said. Then, lowering his voice as though he were about to reveal a dangerous secret, he continued.
"Before anything else, there's something you need to understand about this Sanctuary. It doesn't actually protect us from abominations."
He glanced around cautiously before resuming his explanation.
"The Armament inside the Dark Tower merely repels the polluted Inkforce surrounding this region. That makes life here more bearable and discourages monsters from wandering into the territory it covers."
He paused, allowing his words to sink in before continuing.
"Outside the Sanctuary, abominations are empowered by the surrounding Inkforce pollution. But once they cross into this place, they lose the enhancement they receive from that polluted environment. The change makes them uncomfortable and weakens them, discouraging them from venturing any farther inside."
His expression grew more serious.
"But don't misunderstand me, boy. That doesn't mean the Sanctuary is completely safe. The Armament can't stop an abomination from entering if it's determined enough to push through its discomfort. Any monster can still force its way inside if it truly wants to."
He let that piece of information settle before continuing, his voice becoming even more solemn.
"The only true protector of this place is the Heat Emperor himself. Everyone knows that, and it's precisely why we obey his rules without question, regardless of how cruel or unreasonable they might seem."
He briefly clenched his fists.
"People die here all the time, but nobody dares to rebel openly. Because without the Heat Emperor, everyone in this Sanctuary would be doomed."
He gestured toward the surrounding settlement, where the crude houses stood as fragile shelters against the horrors beyond their walls.
"So, if you want to continue living here and enjoy the protection this place offers, you'd better make sure your family provides its weekly quota of abomination heads. That's the price of survival."
A bitter expression crossed his face.
"Without the Heat Emperor, this Sanctuary would be nothing more than a giant banquet waiting to happen, a gathering of helpless prey sheltered behind an illusion of safety, just waiting for a sufficiently powerful abomination to descend upon them, devour them, and shatter everything they've built."
He paused before adding, "And you should do well to remember that the stronger the abomination whose head you offer to the Heat Emperor, the greater the protection and benefits you're likely to receive in return."
One's eyes narrowed slightly as he processed the information.
The more he learned about the Sanctuary, the more questions arose in his mind.
What exactly did the Heat Emperor need so many abomination heads for?
And wasn't himself the only person capable of absorbing Inkforce, at least as far as One currently understood?
If that were the case, what purpose did all those heads serve?
Was there something special about abominations that he didn't know about? Perhaps the Heat Emperor could extract something from their remains, or perhaps the heads served an entirely different purpose.
One considered several possibilities, but none seemed convincing enough to satisfy his curiosity.
The more he thought about it, the more confused he became.
For now, he could only keep his questions to himself and continue gathering information.
After all, in a world like this, understanding the rules governing a place could be just as important as possessing the strength to survive within it.
Standing several paces behind the others, Marco listened to the information the man provided and nodded inwardly.
He now had a basic understanding of the rules governing this Sanctuary. Compared to the other Sanctuaries he had visited, this place appeared considerably more lenient, offering its inhabitants a greater degree of freedom despite the oppressive rule of the Heat Emperor.
Of course, whether that freedom was genuine or merely another form of control remained to be seen.
Meanwhile, having obtained the information he wanted, One smiled at the family of three, maintaining the same friendly expression he had worn from the beginning.
He had no intention of leaving a bad first impression, much less appearing ungrateful to the people who had taken the time to explain the Sanctuary's rules to him.
After all, his group would be staying here for quite some time before venturing back into the wastelands. Establishing good relationships with the locals was undoubtedly the wisest course of action, especially now that he had gained a clearer understanding of the social hierarchy and survival mechanisms governing this place.
In a world where danger lurked around every corner, even a seemingly insignificant connection could prove valuable at the right moment.
And for One, the information he had just acquired was already worth far more than he had anticipated.
Even in a Sanctuary ruled by a powerhouse like the Heat Emperor, survival demanded more than raw strength. It required cunning, keen observation, and the willingness to submit to a system built around ruthless efficiency.
With this knowledge in hand, One had already begun drawing his own conclusions about how other Sanctuaries might operate. If this place was anything to go by, then despite their differences, most Sanctuaries were likely governed by similar principles, with powerful individuals at the top and everyone else struggling to secure their place beneath them.
Of course, he would need more information before reaching any definitive conclusions.
For now, this Sanctuary would serve as his reference point.
While Marco's group lingered near the outskirts of the settlement, cautiously asking questions and familiarizing themselves with the rules of their temporary refuge, far above them, in the highest reaches of the Dark Castle, Malcolm's senses remained fully alert.
Through his Thermal Omni-Perception, he continued observing the newcomers, carefully examining their distinctive thermal signatures.
His attention lingered on the tall, bald man whose mechanical heart radiated an unusually intense concentration of heat.
A faint sense of danger stirred within Malcolm.
It wasn't particularly strong, nor was it enough to make him feel threatened. He had encountered far more formidable opponents in the past, beings whose existence alone had forced him to reconsider the limits of his own power.
Yet those encounters had taught him an important lesson.
In these wastelands, infested with Ink Pollution and crawling with unimaginable horrors, no creature could afford to regard itself as an absolute predator.
No matter how powerful a being became, there would always be something stronger lurking somewhere in the darkness.
A predator to one creature could easily become prey to another.
And sometimes, the most terrifying hunters were those whose existence their potential victims couldn't even begin to comprehend.
Malcolm leaned back slightly, his expression thoughtful as he contemplated the uncertain future of this chaotic world.
What would eventually come for him?
Another mutant far stronger than himself? An abomination whose existence defied everything he understood about power? Or perhaps some unknown entity so terrifying that he couldn't even begin to imagine its capabilities?
The possibilities were endless.
But regardless of what the future held, one thing remained certain.
He had to be ready when that day arrived.
His thoughts drifted toward the Armament resting at the heart of his Sanctuary.
Every time he collected the heads of slain abominations, particularly those belonging to powerful specimens, the Armament absorbed them and grew stronger.
The heads served as offerings, providing it with the resources it needed to develop. Through this process, it absorbed the Inkforce contained within its offerings, gradually accumulating power in preparation for the day Malcolm would finally claim it as his own.
Until then, he would continue feeding it.
The stronger the Armament became, the better his chances of surviving whatever nightmare the future might unleash upon him.
With that thought in mind, Malcolm rose and began walking through the castle-like structure. His footsteps were silent, his movements unhurried yet purposeful as he made his way toward the building's innermost chamber.
The deeper he ventured, the heavier the atmosphere seemed to become.
Eventually, he arrived at the heart of the Dark Castle.
There, resting within the chamber, was a massive helmet.
Its surface was black as obsidian, swallowing the faint light around it. Tendrils of dark smoke continuously seeped from its surface before curling through the air like living creatures, only to be drawn back into the helmet moments later.
The smoke writhed and twisted with an almost malicious intent, creating the unsettling impression that something within the helmet was breathing.
Strange golden runes covered its surface, their intricate markings glowing faintly against the darkness. The mysterious symbols pulsed with a dim, rhythmic light, lending the artifact an ancient and sinister majesty.
It was both magnificent and deeply threatening.
This was the Armament Malcolm had been nurturing within his Sanctuary.
And with every offering it consumed, the day he could finally equip it drew closer.
He named it The Golden-Runed Obsidian Helmet. A very high level Armament.
The Armament lay motionless amid the writhing tendrils of Inkforce, resembling a colossal mountain that had stood untouched since the dawn of time.
It appeared abandoned, almost discarded, yet there was an undeniable sense of life emanating from its immense, obsidian-black form. Its presence alone carried a weight that seemed to surpass even Malcolm himself, as though the artifact possessed an existence far greater than anything its current appearance could reveal.
Malcolm slowly traced its uneven surface with his eyes, a mixture of awe and reverence reflected in his gaze.
Even after all these years, he could still vividly remember the first time he had encountered this particular Armament.
It had happened approximately ten years ago.
After exacting his revenge on those who had wronged him, Malcolm had wandered into the wastelands, leaving devastation in his wake. During his transformation, he had obliterated everything in his immediate vicinity, including his former employer's family. By the time the destruction subsided, there had been little left to remind him of the life he had once lived.
With his vengeance behind him, he had ventured deeper into the chaotic wastelands.
For years, he had traveled through those corrupted lands, killing, destroying, and absorbing whatever crossed his path. Abominations, mutants, and anything else unfortunate enough to attract his attention became nothing more than fuel for his continued growth.
He left almost nothing untouched.
And it was during those travels that he witnessed something extraordinary.
The birth of an Armament.
He still remembered the surreal spectacle as though it had happened yesterday.
The surrounding Inkforce had surged into a violent frenzy, its tendrils sweeping across the area with overwhelming force. Buildings collapsed inward, vehicles were crushed and torn apart, and countless fragments of the surrounding environment were dragged toward a single point.
Even living beings were not spared.
Unfortunate mutant humans, abominations and animals caught within the phenomenon were swallowed by the surging Inkforce, their bodies collapsing alongside the surrounding structures as everything was drawn into the same terrifying process.
Then, gradually, the chaos began to converge.
Countless fragments of matter, remnants of living organisms, and concentrated Inkforce compressed into a singular form.
An obsidian-black object emerged from the devastation, its surface possessing an unnatural, partially living quality that set it apart from anything Malcolm had ever encountered.
An Armament had been born.
By that point, Malcolm had already learned the true value of such objects through the knowledge and experience he had accumulated during his travels across the wastelands. He understood that an Armament was far more than an ordinary artifact. In the right hands, it could become the foundation of a Sanctuary, a source of immense power, and the key to establishing dominion over a vast territory.
And so, from the moment he witnessed its formation, Malcolm made his decision.
He would claim these lands for himself.
From that day onward, his word became law.
His desperate thirst for vengeance, combined with the brutal lessons he had learned throughout his years in the wastelands, had forged something far greater than raw strength within him. He had developed the instincts of a predator, the ruthlessness of a survivor, and the commanding presence of someone who had grown accustomed to imposing his will upon everything around him.
His power had made him dangerous.
His experiences had made him calculating.
And together, they had forged within him the aura of a ruler.
With the Armament as its foundation, Malcolm personally set about reconstructing the entire city from the ground up. He began with the abandoned church, gradually transforming the ruined structure into the imposing fortress that would become known as the Dark Castle.
Around it, he established his Sanctuary.
He oversaw the reconstruction of buildings, the organization of the settlement, and the gradual expansion of the territory protected by the Armament's influence. Every structure, every boundary, and every decision contributed to the creation of a domain that answered to him alone.
Yet his efforts were not merely an attempt to conceal the Armament or keep its existence a secret from outsiders.
As a matter of fact, it was quite the opposite.
Everything he had built was a declaration.
A declaration of absolute dominion, unquestionable authority, and unchallenged ownership over the lands cleansed by the Armament's influence.
The Sanctuary was not simply a refuge for those seeking protection from the horrors of the wastelands. It was a monument to Malcolm's power, an unmistakable warning to anyone foolish enough to trespass upon what he had claimed.
Every wall he raised and every rule he imposed reinforced the same message.
These lands belong to me.
And the man who ruled them was Malcolm: The Heat Emperor.
He would not tolerate even the slightest suggestion that someone might dare to covet what was already his.
The territory beneath his rule belonged to him. The Sanctuary's resources belonged to him. The survivors who sought refuge within its boundaries existed under his authority, their continued survival dependent upon the order he had established.
Even the abominations that roamed his domain were not exempt from his claim.
Whether they were human, mutant, or monster, anything that entered his sphere of influence was something Malcolm believed he had the right to control, exploit, or destroy.
To him, there was no distinction between protecting his territory and possessing it.
After all, in a world where the weak were devoured by the strong, why should he surrender anything he had fought to obtain?
He was Malcolm, the Heat Emperor.
And everything beneath his rule belonged to him.
